BACKGROUND SCREENING AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROCEDURES IMPORTANT INFORMATION Policy: All diocesan employees and volunteers, school and parish, age 18 and above, working in any capacity with minors, children under 18, and vulnerable adults must obtain criminal background screening, safe environment training and sign the diocese Policy Against Sexual Misconduct Code of Conduct. Per Diocesan directive all Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick and Homebound, Sacristans, Assistant Sacristans, Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, Directors/Coordinators of Religious Education, Principals, Teachers, and all school person Ushers, Youth ministers, parish staff, Altar Server trainers, Music directors, and anyone coming in contact with minors, must be fingerprinted and safe environment trained. If you are presently volunteering for any of the above ministries and need to complete the process, please contact Chris Hanna at [email protected]. In the meantime, you must refrain from your volunteering duties. Due to the fact that EMHC to the sick, care facilities and hospitals are required to interact with vulnerable adults, those delegated for these ministries must follow the Diocesan Policy for Safe Environment compliance as well as anyone coming in contact with children. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL CANCELLED THIS SUMMER Vacation Bible School is cancelled this summer due to Holy Family Cathedral School’s S.E.E.D project. Construction starts immediately after school is over this upcoming July. Please see the school page (bulletin page 10) for information on HFCS summer camp and summer school dates and times. Summer camp would be an alternative option to our annual vacation bible school.

ST. DISMAS BROTHERHOOD The Brotherhood of Saint Dismas welcomes all Catholic men who wish to develop their spiritual life. Together we strive to come closer to Christ fostering a spirit of prayer and penance, studying our Catholic faith, mutual support and other opportunities for spiritual growth. DIOCESAN TRAINING FOR EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION (EMHC) TO THE SICK* Saturday, August 26, 8:30am – 12:30pm, St. Norbert Parish Hall We are in need of Extraordinary Ministers to the Sick and homebound for all our loved ones who are not able to join us here at Mass. The ministry involves bringing Holy Communion to some of our elderly. It is usually only a weekly commitment and depending on how many you wish to minister to, as little as one hour. If you are interested, there are a few steps to follow. The Diocese requires a background check with fingerprinting, an online “safe boundaries” course; which only takes about 30 minutes and delegation from the bishop. The parish requires attendance of a Diocesan training and parish MSP training. We are happy to assist you in completing all steps and ensuring you receive all the training you need. Don’t worry, you will not be thrown to the wolves. You will be guided by an experienced minister the first couple of times until you are comfortable with the ministry. Please contact Chris Hanna in the rectory office and she can get you started in the background check process.

ATTENTION ALL EXISTING EMHC TO THE SICK! Thank you for your service over the past two plus years. Most of you have served for many more. All EMHC commissions expire this summer. We pray you will all continue serving in this rewarding ministry. If you wish to be delegated by the Bishop for another two year term, you must complete the steps listed above. A HUMBLE KING Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today’s readings is humility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches “from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zechariah 9:10). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. —Rev. REFLEXIONEMOS SOBRE LA PALABRA DE DIOS La fuerza laboral estadounidense trabaja más horas hoy en día y su producción es más rápida que nunca antes. Algunos dicen que el incentivo más fuerte es el peligro de perder el trabajo o los beneficios si no se produce adecuadamente. Otros acreditan el aumento de productividad a las atractivas recompensas monetarias integradas al sistema empresarial. De cualquier manera, la mayoría de los analistas están de acuerdo en que esa tendencia no es buena. En toda categoría de ingresos hay personas que están sacrificando demasiado el tiempo con su familia a fin de darle más tiempo al trabajo. Esta semana las tres lecturas bíblicas ejemplifican el sistema de recompensa que Dios ofrece a aquellas personas que hacen sacrificios meritorios. A diferencia de los sacrificios debido al exceso de trabajo, estos sacrificios traen recompensas eternas. La historia de Eliseo y la mujer servicial ejemplifica las recompensas por la generosidad. Ella no actúa por interés propio, sino por respeto al siervo de Dios, el profeta Eliseo. La generosidad de la mujer es recompensada con una vida nueva en su vientre, un hijo que cuide de ella al llegar a su ancianidad. Pablo nos dice que todos los que hemos muerto al pecado viviremos con Cristo en “una vida nueva” (Romanos 6:4). Por último Jesús dice que “el que pierda [la vida] por mí, la conservará . . . y quien dé un vaso de agua fresca a uno de estos pequeños, no se quedará sin recompensa” (Mateo 10:39, 42). UN REY HUMILDE Como el centro tonal en música, la nota que sigue retornando en las lecturas de hoy es la humildad. Esperamos con gozosa expectativa la venida de nuestro Señor como Rey. Pero se nos dice que esperemos y nos regocijemos en este manso y humilde rey, montado en un burrito. No en el caballo o el carruaje de los grandes y poderosos, sino en una humilde bestia que carga al Rey cuyo dominio se extiende “desde el gran río hasta los últimos rincones de la tierra” (Zacarías 9:10). TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En el año 2001, Carlos Manuel Rodríguez Santiago se convirtió en el primer laico caribeño beatificado por la Iglesia. Su vida fue ejemplar en la caridad y en el amor a la liturgia, pues promovió la participación de los fieles de una manera activa, mucho antes de que el Concilio Vaticano II así lo pidiera. En 1963 una colitis rectal muy severa lo llevó a los brazos de Cristo resucitado, a la edad de 44 años. Carlitos, como muchos lo llaman, trabajó en la Universidad de Puerto Rico y fundó un grupo apostólico laical en el Centro Católico de dicha universidad. Allí pudo obrar por el desarrollo del humanismo cristiano, la participación activa de los laicos en la liturgia de la Iglesia y por la renovación de la Vigilia Pascual. Solía decir que los cristianos “vivimos para esa noche” como cumbre y centro de nuestra fe. Carlitos es modelo para los laicos comprometidos con su fe. Él insistía no sólo en una participación activa en la pastoral de la Iglesia, sino también en la liturgia de la Iglesia en una época donde la Misa todavía se consideraba obra exclusiva de los sacerdotes. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
