From the Pastor’s Desk Today, throughout the world, we are celebrating Valentine’s Day. It is certainly a day that secular society has usurped, turning it into a commercial holiday with romantic overtones and causing it to lose all of its meaning as the religious festival of Saint Valentine! St. Valentine was a priest in Rome during the time of the Emperor Claudius II, who was persecuting Christians. Believing young unmarried men fought better than married men, Claudius forbade young couples to be married. Valentine, realizing marriage as sacred between one man and one woman, and the importance of this Sacrament, encouraged couples to get married within the Church and performed these weddings secretly against the edict of Emperor Claudius. When he was discovered, Valentine was imprisoned and sentenced to a “three-part execution of beating by clubs, stoning and finally decapitation”, all for his stand for Christian marriage. He died in the year c. 270.A.D, a martyr to the values of the beauty of Christian marriage. You and I are living in a society where the family and Christian marriage are under attack from all sides. It is not that people want to marry and are forbidden; it is that people are indifferent to marriage both as a civil institution for the common good of society and as a Sacrament, symbolizing the union of Christ and His church. Society has become indifferent to and accepting of co-habitation, same-sex “marriage” and divorce at alarming rates. No thought is given to “Family”-children –and the impact of all of this on society in general. All thoughts seem to be directed only to “me” and “my happiness”—the opposite of everything that true love is about, which is self-giving and sacrifice. It seems the more fragile marriage is becoming, the more we are happy to delude ourselves with elaborate wedding celebrations that cost tens of thousands of dollars but which lack the fundamental understanding of love in its deepest sense. Unfortunately, and sadly, this is the same care for Christian believers as for persons with no faith. St. Valentine, who died for the cause of Christian marriage, should give us pause to reflect and should challenge our vision of marriage and how we celebrate it.. Recently I had a conversation with a young couple preparing for marriage in July. It was a beautiful and faithfilled experience. As we talked about the many different aspects of marriage, their main concern was, “Father, what can we do to make sure Christ stays at the center of our married life? We know without Him, we will never be able to keep loving each other the way we want!” It was uplifting for me to meet with this young couple who, in spite of the secular odds, got it right! It takes three to get married: Christ must be the third party! Today, as we celebrate the feast of this martyr, Valentine, who gave his life for the sanctity and protection of Catholic Christian marriage, we need to ask ourselves: What sacrifice am I ready to make to uphold the dignity of Christian Marriage with my own actions, within my family and in my culture? Or, will I just “go with the flow” and choose to become indifferent to one of the most beautiful and gracefilled human experiences that Jesus gave us: Catholic Christian marriage? God bless you!

Men in Formation /Hombres en formación/ Seminaristas em formação We continue to join together to ask God and Mary, Help of Christians, to guide our brothers in Christ on their journeys and in their commitments to Salesian religious life. We also journey into this Lenten season keeping in mind the preparation and sacrifice that our Lord made for us, that we, too may ready our hearts, minds, and souls to give our love/time/work to God. Br. Paul G. writes: "My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music." ~Psalm 57:7 Being Salesian to me means being a joyful presence among the young with Jesus and Mary by our sides. ———————————————————————————————————————————El Hermano Paul G.
