Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano Sept. 9 and 10 Special Collection for Franciscan Works - Liberia Mission

Franciscan Works currently operates Liberia Mission in West Africa. Founded in 2003, just as the civil war was ending, Liberia Mission began with just six orphaned children. Today it is a vibrant, life-saving community of love, learning, work and prayer, with about 50 residents. Nearly 500 youths from surrounding villages attend St. Anthony of Padua Mission School. These are young people who would not otherwise have access to education, medical care, adequate food and shelter, and faith-formation. St. Michael the Archangel Church located on the Mission services the neighboring community. These children are learning to become future leaders in their families, communities and country. Much prayer, joy and hope is evident at Liberia Mission, even with the sorrow and hardships associated with Ebola and the political and economic strife there. May challenges remain. Your help is needed for this important ministry. Please be generous. Thank you!

INFANT BAPTISMAL MINISTRY Is hospitality your gift? Do you like to help people feel comfortable and welcomed? Then the infant baptismal ministry is a perfect opportunity to exercise your gift in our community of young parents. Join our baptismal team of 3-4 people assisting our deacon and priests with the baptism of infants. Two teams alternate every other month on third Sunday (you would be helping only 5 times a year) from 2:15 to 4:00 PM in the basilica. Some of the tasks include greeting the parents, godparents, family and friends, assisting them as they find their place in the pews, filling the font with water, lighting candles, setting out the oils, distributing baptismal candles, certificates, garments, making announcements, proclaiming the reading, preparing the area by the baptismal font, assisting the deacon during the baptismal rite……. The Called & Gifted Workshop guides individuals through a process of discernment in which they may discover and recognize their gifts given by the Holy Spirit through baptism and confirmation. These gifts are real clues to who God created you to be, and what God created you to do! “LET THE CHILDLREN COME TO ME…..” Matthew 19:14 Do you like working with children? Do you want to share your faith in a more concrete way and influence the younger generation? Can you give one hour a month to talk about Jesus? Then you are the person to help our young catechumens, ages 8 through 12, who are preparing for reception of the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. Each Sunday, they are dismissed during Mass after the readings to continue “breaking open the word.” The person who leads the children as they break open the word is called a “dismissal leader.” A dismissal leader guides the children to understand the gospel reading and to know Jesus Christ through the stories in the gospel. Time commitment is one Sunday a month-- 9:00 to 10:15 am--- from October, 2017 to May, 2018. That is a total of only 10 hours plus some prep time at home. All materials are provided and training for new dismissal leaders will be held on Tuesday, September 26 from 7:30 to 9 PM in Room E. Requirements include fingerprinting through the diocese, online safe environment training, and the dismissal leader must have completed all the sacraments of initiation. Tema: “Dios estaba en Cristo, reconciliando al mundo consigo, y a nosotros nos ha confiado la palabra de la reconciliación”

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: El Maestro sigue convocando a su Comunidad, a nosotros, porque quiere seguir trabajando a quienes han aceptado su propuesta del Reino. Y es que pretende un ESTILO DE VIDA en cada uno de nosotros. Y cuando se lleva dentro el Reino de Dios, el creyente tiene que ser testigo de los valores de ese Reino. Ésta es también la propuesta de la Palabra de Dios para este domingo. El cristiano se enfrenta cada día al mal que constantemente le rodea; no puede quedar indiferente ante él, sino que lo tiene que denunciar (1ª lectura). Por lo tanto, con escandalizarse de lo que hacen los demás, no ese suficiente; querer encerrarnos en algún lugar “puro y santo” para huir de esa realidad, tampoco es el camino, según la Palabra de Dios. Quiere que permanezcamos en el lugar donde el hombre vive y se relaciona, donde trabaja y se afana, donde lucha y se divierte. Pero no para condenarle, sino para SALVARLE. Éste es el objetivo último (el Evangelio de hoy). Quiere que no se juzgue a los otros, sino que se le perdone; no quiere que se le margine, sino que se esté a su lado mientras camina y quiere que andemos a su mismo paso. Ésta es la forma que utiliza el mismo Señor para con nosotros. La razón es que nos lleva en el corazón y desde ahí todo se ve diferente. ¡DICHOSOS quienes aceptan el ESTILO de Jesús: porque su vida será una BENDICIÓN para nuestro mundo!

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Durante todo el mes de septiembre se celebra el mes de la herencia hispana. Esta fiesta responde a una presencia hispana que tiene su inicio con la llegada de los españoles a la Florida en 1513, hace 501 años. Los españoles estuvieron en 24 de los ahora 50 estados de Estados Unidos. Eventualmente, como bien sabemos, Florida, el Suroeste y Puerto Rico pasaron a manos de los estadounidenses. Desde nuestra incorporación a este país hemos ido creciendo en presencia e influencia. La primera obra literaria en español publicada en EE. UU., fue un sermón de don José Agustín Caballero en 1804. En 1808 inició la prensa hispana en EE. UU. con el periódico El Misisipi en Nueva Orleáns. Este fue el primero de los medios de comunicación en español en esta nación. En 1822 se eligió el primer político Hispano como representante estatal de Florida. En 1865 la primera oficina para la pastoral católica entre los hispanos nombró al sacerdote Gabriel Serrano pastor hispanorium (pastor de los hispanos) en San Francisco, California. En 1970 el sacerdote Patricio Flores fue el primer hispano en ser consagrado como Obispo en y para Estados Unidos. FRANCISCAN WORKS + LIBERIA MISSION es una organización que trabaja en Liberia, un país ubicado en la costa oeste de África. En su historia reciente, Liberia se vio envuelta en una guerra civil que duró por catorce años hasta el dos mil tres. En este ambiente, recibimos el llamado en 2003 de servir a Dios con los niños que perdieron a sus padres en la guerra. Empezamos con algunos seis huérfanos, proveyendo comida, un hogar seguro, y educación. Nuestro misión ha crecido mucho desde este momento y ahora, estamos orgullosos porque tenemos una escuela, una finca, y una iglesia Católica. Casi 500 jóvenes desde los pueblos circundantes van a nuestra escuela San Antonio de Padua. También, tenemos una iglesia, San Miguel Arcángel, que está ubicado en la misión y que sirve la comunidad. Nuestros estudiantes están aprendiendo como ser los líderes futuros de sus familias, comunidades y país. Oración, gozo y esperanza estan evidente en Liberia Mission, a pesar del sufrimiento por la epidemia de ébola y la lucha política y económica. Cada día, nos enfrentamos con muchos obstáculos. Entonces, los invitamos a sumarse a nosotros para enfrentar juntos este reto. Queremos continuar sirviendo nuestros niños, pero no es posible sin dinero. No tenemos ayuda del gobierno, solo gente generosa que nos dan el apoyo necesario para continuar. Pues, estoy pidiendo que ustedes consideren darnos su apoyo hoy. Muchísimas gracias.
