INFANT BAPTISMAL MINISTRY Is hospitality your gift? Do you like to help people feel comfortable and welcomed? Then the infant baptismal ministry is a perfect opportunity to exercise your gift in our community of young parents. Join our baptismal team of 3-4 people assisting our deacon and priests with the baptism of infants. Two teams alternate every other month on third Sunday (you would be helping only 5 times a year) from 2:15 to 4:00 PM in the basilica. Some of the tasks include greeting the parents, godparents, family and friends, assisting them as they find their place in the pews, filling the font with water, lighting candles, setting out the oils, distributing baptismal candles, certificates, garments, making announcements, proclaiming the reading, preparing the area by the baptismal font, assisting the deacon during the baptismal rite……. Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano Cub Scouts

Cub Scouts Pack 13 is beginning the new 2017-18 calendar year. Over the last year, the boys have bonded with one another and learned invaluable leadership skills. They have increased their development in their self-confidence, ethics, and understanding of citizenship. On Veteran's Day, they partook in an event to honor our Veterans. During the holiday season, they spent time caroling to seniors diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. For Memorial weekend, they placed flags at Veteran’s gravesides. In addition, the scouts participated in physical outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, zip-lining, rock-climbing, and making race cars for the Pinewood Derby. They also enjoyed field trips to the local Firehouse, the Angels game, the Ducks game, bowling, Medieval Times, and a visit to the USS Midway in San Diego. The Cub Scouts have not only provided the boys with friendship, but also, life skills and opportunities that will continue to shape their spiritual and personal character. “Visit the Sick” As a baptized Christian, visiting the sick is one of our corporal works of mercy. A number of people in our parish are already Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to the Sick and Homebound and are visiting the many people of our parish who are not able to attend mass each week. They bring Holy Communion and spend some time in prayer with them. Yet, we need more people to fulfill this ministry demand. If you have a desire to be of service to those who are homebound, please contact Eileen at 949-234-1354 or [email protected]. Qualifications of an EMHC to the sick and homebound are: (a) practicing Catholic, (b) have completed all Sacraments of Initiation, (c) safe environment trained. Religious Education Program Registrations for Religious Education classes for year 2017-2018 are now available in the Pastoral Center office. We are accepting children from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Registrations will close on August 25th. There is a required orientation for all parents, which is part of the program: • Spanish - Sunday, August 27 (10:30am to 12:30pm) • English - Monday, August 28 (5:30pm to 7:30pm) In addition to our office hours from Monday to Friday (9am to 5pm), our office will open the following days to accept registrations: • Saturday, August 19th from 4:30pm to 7:30pm • Sunday, August 20th from 9:00am to 3:00pm Invitation for parents We all have talents to share with others, what better way to do so with your community. Come and share your time and talents with children, teens or adults. My name is Ana Mendoza. I am an adult who is currently preparing for the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. I have been attending preparation sessions on Sunday morning, and I am looking forward to Easter 2018 when I hope to celebrate these sacraments and become a fully initiated Catholic. While I am preparing, I would like to find a woman from our parish who is willing to be my parish sponsor. A parish sponsor accompanies someone who is preparing for the sacraments. Tema: “Espero en el Señor, espero en su palabra”

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: Cada domingo nos convoca el SEÑOR JESÚS. Sigue empeñado en no dejarnos solos; sabe de nuestras debilidades y miedos. Y precisamente de miedos nos habla el mensaje de este domingo. Vamos a descubrir este mensaje. Un día más, Pedro es todo un símbolo: seguro que nos podemos sentir identificados con él: flaquea su fe, le entra miedo, teme hundirse. ¡Cuántas experiencias NUESTRAS están recogidas en este grito del apóstol! Aquel “Señor, sálvame” es algo tan de la vida… Porque -lo reconozcamos o no- hoy nuestro mundo vive en un clima de miedo y de temor; y eso a pesar de los grandes progresos de la humanidad: será la inseguridad, el dolor, el daño a los nuestros, el paro con sus crisis, la soledad, la marginación o la vida vacía de sentido. ¡Tantos miedos como situaciones y personas! Pues es en este contexto donde los creyentes de HOY escuchamos en el Evangelio aquello de “Jesús extendió la mano”: esto significa que Él está siempre CERCA, está a nuestro lado. Esto puede ofrecernos la confianza necesaria para la vida. Como también puede hacer de nosotros hombres y mujeres que ofrecen CONFIANZA a los demás ante las situaciones de la vida. Otro tanto nos dirá el pasaje del gran profeta Elías tras el encuentro con Dios. Dios estaba en la brisa suave y entonces... ¡todo cambia! ¡Dichosos quienes dan CONFIANZA a los demás!

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Frecuentemente, los santos y santas son personas molestas que desafían tanto a los fieles como a los infieles. Tal es el caso del agustino Ezequiel Moreno Díaz (1848-1906), obispo de Pasto, Colombia. Nació en La Rioja, España, en el seno de una familia pobre. En 1865 ingresó en la orden de los agustinos y fue enviado como misionero a Filipinas. Luego se ofreció como misionero en Colombia donde buscó renovar la orden de los agustinos. En 1895 el Papa León XIII lo nombró obispo de Parma, lugar en el que le esperaba un martirio moral de calumnias, desprecios y humillaciones por parte de las autoridades civiles. Sus mensajes y desafíos pastorales llevaron a los fieles a un mayor fervor apostólico a tal grado, que incomodó al gobierno. En 1898 buscó renunciar a su puesto como obispo para no continuar como causa de polémicas y problemas para la Iglesia. El Papa no permitió su renuncia, más bien lo animó a seguir promoviendo el celo apostólico por el bien del pueblo.
