INFANT BAPTISMAL MINISTRY Is hospitality your gift? Do you like to help people feel comfortable and welcomed? Then the infant baptismal ministry is a perfect opportunity to exercise your gift in our community of young parents. Join our baptismal team of 3-4 people assisting our deacon and priests with the baptism of infants. Two teams alternate every other month on third Sunday (you would be helping only 5 times a year) from 2:15 to 4:00 PM in the basilica. Some of the tasks include greeting the parents, godparents, family and friends, assisting them as they find their place in the pews, filling the font with water, lighting candles, setting out the oils, distributing baptismal candles, certificates, garments, making announcements, proclaiming the reading, preparing the area by the baptismal font, assisting the deacon during the baptismal rite……. Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano Next Week Sept. 9 and 10 Special Collection for Franciscan Works - Liberia Mission

Franciscan Works currently operates Liberia Mission in West Africa. Founded in 2003, just as the civil war was ending, Liberia Mission began with just six orphaned children. Today it is a vibrant, life-saving community of love, learning, work and prayer, with about 50 residents. Nearly 500 youths from surrounding villages attend St. Anthony of Padua Mission School. These are young people who would not otherwise have access to education, medical care, adequate food and shelter, and faith-formation. St. Michael the Archangel Church located on the Mission services the neighboring community.

“LET THE CHILDLREN COME TO ME…..” Matthew 19:14 Do you like working with children? Do you want to share your faith in a more concrete way and influence the younger generation? Can you give one hour a month to talk about Jesus? Then you are the person to help our young catechumens, ages 8 through 12, who are preparing for reception of the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. Each Sunday, they are dismissed during Mass after the readings to continue “breaking open the word.” The person who leads the children as they break open the word is called a “dismissal leader.” A dismissal leader guides the children to understand the gospel reading and to know Jesus Christ through the stories in the gospel. Time commitment is one Sunday a month-- 9:00 to 10:15 am--- from October, 2017 to May, 2018. That is a total of only 10 hours plus some prep time at home. All materials are provided and training for new dismissal leaders will be held on Tuesday, September 26 from 7:30 to 9 PM in Room E. Requirements include fingerprinting through the diocese, online safe environment training, and the dismissal leader must have completed all the sacraments of initiation. Tema: “El que quiera venirse conmigo, que se niegue a sí mismo, que cargue con su cruz y me siga”

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: Seguimos escuchando al MAESTRO: como un grupo convencido de su enseñanza. Nos reunimos para escucharle y, luego, partir el pan en su misma mesa. Una vez más es el motivo de nuestro encuentro dominical. Hoy, su PALABRA nos presenta a dos figuras singulares: JEREMÍAS y PEDRO; en dos actitudes distintas y los dos queriendo ser fieles a Dios, a su Señor, de quien están enamorados. JEREMÍAS: desde su corazón, conmovido, es capaz de pronunciar: “Me sedujiste, Señor, y me dejé seducir”. Esto habla de relación profunda, amorosa, de dejarse transformar por dentro, asimilarnos a su modo de pensar y sentir. Está poseído por Dios. Toda una experiencia que marca la vida. PEDRO: el domingo pasado era alabado y piropeado por Jesús, por su respuesta atinada y certera; hoy resulta que escucha unas palabras durísimas de Jesús, nada menos que “quítate de mi vista, Satanás, que me haces tropezar; tú piensas como los hombres, no como Dios”. Está claro que a Pedro le queda mucho camino por recorrer hasta llegar a esa experiencia de Jesús, la experiencia que “marca” y que transforma. Sabemos que lo va a realizar, pero está en camino. No basta “con saber”; es necesario ser marcado. Y… ¿NOSOTROS? Necesitamos seguirle para saber quién es Jesús, conocerle, de forma que nos transforme. No basta con imaginarle, aunque su “imagen” sea bonita. Es necesario EXPERIMENTARLE. ¡DICHOSOS los que se dejan SEDUCIR por Jesús!

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Muchos católicos afroamericanos son miembros de los Caballeros de san Pedro Claver, organización fundada para ellos en 1909, cuando el racismo no les permitía participar en organizaciones euroestadounidenses. Esta organización toma su nombre de un jesuita español del siglo XVII, Pedro, quien llegó a Cartagena (Colombia) en 1610 y se escandalizó ante la trata de esclavos en el continente americano. A pesar de censuras papales en contra de la esclavitud esta pecaminosa costumbre seguía robando humanidad a los africanos. Pedro se consagró al servicio de ellos, recibiéndolos con caridad, comida y alivio apenas llegaban en los barcos. Pedro no pudo liberar a los esclavos pero si se dedicó a servirlos y convertirlos. Él preparaba catequistas de entre los mismos africanos para que pudieran cristianizar a los recién llegados. Pedro Claver sufrió muchos insultos y calumnias por reunir a los africanos en iglesias y en especial, por darles los sacramentos cristianos. Sus propios superiores, dejándose llevar por las críticas de los criollos, lo castigaban por el trabajo que hacía con los esclavos. FRANCISCAN WORKS + LIBERIA MISSION es una organización que trabaja en Liberia, un país ubicado en la costa oeste de África. En su historia reciente, Liberia se vio envuelta en una guerra civil que duró por catorce años hasta el dos mil tres. En este ambiente, recibimos el llamado en 2003 de servir a Dios con los niños que perdieron a sus padres en la guerra. Empezamos con algunos seis huérfanos, proveyendo comida, un hogar seguro, y educación. Nuestro misión ha crecido mucho desde este momento y ahora, estamos orgullosos porque tenemos una escuela, una finca, y una iglesia Católica. Casi 500 jóvenes desde los pueblos circundantes van a nuestra escuela San Antonio de Padua. También, tenemos una iglesia, San Miguel Arcángel, que está ubicado en la misión y que sirve la comunidad. Nuestros estudiantes están aprendiendo como ser los líderes futuros de sus familias, comunidades y país. Oración, gozo y esperanza estan evidente en Liberia Mission, a pesar del sufrimiento por la epidemia de ébola y la lucha política y económica. Cada día, nos enfrentamos con muchos obstáculos. Entonces, los invitamos a sumarse a nosotros para enfrentar juntos este reto. Queremos continuar sirviendo nuestros niños, pero no es posible sin dinero. No tenemos ayuda del gobierno, solo gente generosa que nos dan el apoyo necesario para continuar. Pues, estoy pidiendo que ustedes consideren darnos su apoyo hoy. Muchísimas gracias.
