THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, three in one and one in three. There you have it, neatly laid out and self-contained. As is our usual custom we try to “understand” this mystery of our faith. We have testimony about the three from Jesus himself, from the Gospel of John two weeks ago, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name…” Approaching their unity requires us to use our gift of faith where truth comes not from our ability to “know” as much as to accept what has been “revealed” to us. Sometimes that feels a little awkward, it asks that we listen with more than our minds by hearing also what lies within our hearts. Further, we are part of the great company whom Jesus called blessed because we have not seen but yet believed. Reflecting on this foundational aspect of our faith is a fruitful way to place ourselves in the perspective of God’s creation. We spend much of our time simply dealing with the reality of day to day living. A place where choices are more readily understood: put tab A in slot B, call this number for more information, there is 10% of our recommended daily dose of sodium in that food… Our heads make light work of these kind of directions or interactions but what about our hearts? Complex beings that we are, we need both parts of who we are, flesh and spirit. Reflecting on the wonder of the Trinity involves both parts for sure but they are drawn together by mystery. Our spirits revel in the wonder of a God so close and yet not as tangible as we’d like. When those thoughts come we benefit from a deep breath and then allowing wonder. Wonder in knowing the truth of God’s revealed presence in the Holy Trinity, but that presence also abides in us and our neighbor. That can be for us, in Neil Armstrong’s famous words, “One small step for a man” and as he continued “one giant leap for mankind.” The dichotomy of being an individual and also a member of many different groups provides a perspective. An ability to situate ourselves in the context of others as well as in our own personhood. The Trinity, in some sense, has a similar relationship. Three natures, one God. Take some time to sit with that. In a small way we too can describe ourselves. Yes we are individuals but there are multiple aspects of our personalities, our skills, our emotions. Gathering ourselves into our center helps us to draw from God’s presence in order to walk our faith journey; allowing us to find God’s grace to be “enough for us.” As in many things, the journey begins with the smallest of steps. Love is the first step.
GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK
It’s time for spring, uh summer cleaning. Take inventory in your storage spaces (especially the garage). Things we’ve put away “in case I’ll need them” can be a boon for another. It’s personal item recycling time, if you haven't used it, let someone else.
FROM THE DESK OF FR. SERGIO OVANDO, PASTOR….
The Seal of Confession When I consider the priesthood in our Church, the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession has always been one aspect of Catholic practice that makes us different. Growing up I asked myself how people could approach an unknown person, trusting their inner-most thoughts and deeds in an act of repentance. I have always been aware of the Seal of Confession, but as a priest I have learned even more how essential this is to this sacrament: the trust of people in knowing that nothing of what they say to a priest in Confession will be ever shared with anyone. This is what encourages a penitent to open their soul in Confession. Keeping that secret is a vital part of our mission as priests. For this reason, Senate Bill 360 is a clear affront to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Seal of Confession as well as being an affront to the free exercise of religion. SB 360 proposes that child molestation should be reported by a priest when he hears of it in Confession. This would not only violate the nature of Confession, but it would also set a precedent in relation to other kinds of communication made in the course of Confession. Child abuse is a terrible crime and sin. But if the law of California were to require that child abuse, reported in Confession, be reported to the civil authorities, what will stop our lawmakers to go after the other sins (rape, murder, etc.) when this door is opened? To be clear, priests have been and remain mandated reporters of child abuse, reported in any other venue than the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We have put a video from our bishop online, with information of how you can contact members of the State Assembly to help in the effort to keep SB 360 from becoming law. Visit our website - www.stca.org to view the video or for more information.

Equipping Families to Pass On the Faith stca.org/ym Fathers in Our Lives We give our thanks, Creator God, for the fathers in our lives. Fatherhood does not come with a manual, and reality teaches us that some fathers excel while others fail. We ask for Your blessings for them all and forgiveness where it is needed. This Father's Day we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways--both big and small--they lift children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach. So too, we remember all those who have helped fill the void when fathers pass early or are absent; grandfathers and uncles, brothers and cousins, teachers and coaches and the women of our families. For those who are fathers, we ask that you fill them with strength, courage and wisdom in the face of the task of parenting. We ask all these things in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus, Amen.
