LEAVE A LEGACY MONTH June is “Leave a Legacy” month in the Diocese of Norwich. It is a wonderful time to remind parishioners in the Diocese about the value of charitable estate planning. Some people choose to mark their legacy by requesting gifts made in memoriam to the parish, school, ministry or the Diocese in lieu of flowers upon their passing. Others include a bequest in their Will to their favorite Catholic organization. Still others are interested in establishing an endowment with the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Norwich to benefit a diocesan organization. Most recently, Mr. Leo Barron of Gales Ferry established The Leo E. and Lorraine A. Barron Endowment within the Catholic Foundation to support our Lady of Lourdes Church. We are blessed that Mr. Barron’s generosity will allow him to help his Church into perpetuity. If you are interested in learning more about how you can leave your legacy and support all the good works that the Church is involved with, please contact Mary Ellen Mahoney, Development Manager, at (860) 886-1928 or email [email protected].

CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY A MESSAGE FROM FATHER LARRY

UN MENSAJE DEL PADRE LARRY

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, A heartfelt thank you and God bless you to all those who bought or sold raffle tickets for our first annual car/truck raffle. 1215 tickets were bought so the odds were very good. The winners are listed elsewhere in this Bulletin. The Jumpin’ Jivin’ Jubilee Jam (a.k.a. the Dance) was a big hit. We will definitely have to repeat this event too as a way to raise awareness of our Alumni group and of the three parishes of the Corpus Christi Catholic Community. The final figures aren’t in on these two events at publication time but we will be reporting the totals in next week’s bulletin. This old fashioned way of communicating with you through the printed word is our front line in getting information to you. Please read it carefully and spread the news you read about the CCCC and the church in general published here. The Bulletin is also available online at the CCCC website www.https.catholicwindham.org .These are the best ways to get real information…that and a phone call or e-mail to me directly. This week I heard there is a rumor circulating that Sagrado Corazón Church is closing in October or November. I am very grateful to the conscientious parishioner who called to say, “What’s up?” The best way to squelch rumors and gossip is to go directly to the horse’s … mouth. I suspect all the talk about change in the churches of our diocese, the lengthy delay in any local action and the mergers in adjoining dioceses fueled speculation regarding a beloved church in our midst. There is NO plan to close Sagrado Corazon Church or Saint Mary’s or Saint Joseph’s. Here, in the Corpus Christi Catholic Community, unlike many other clusters, we have been implementing collaborative activities, programs, ministries and the common Bulletin for quite some time. The merger of parishes we so often hear about does not imply the closure of churches. One change coming up, however, is to move the Saturday 4:30 Vigil Mass at Saint Mary’s to Sunday evening at 5 PM still at Saint Mary’s during the weekends of July and August. All other scheduled Masses in the Corpus Christi Catholic Community Mass schedule remain as currently scheduled. Mass intentions for those Saturdays will be moved to Sunday evenings. This change will affect the schedule for the weekends of July and August only. ( July 7-8, 1415, 21-22, 28-29, August 4-5, 11-12, 18-19, 25-26) This is an experimental schedule and will be reviewed to see if it should be more permanent later. Lots of consultation would precede a longer change. I am also currently consulting widely for additional funding and increased and improved marketing for Saint Mary-Saint Joseph School in light of declining enrollment. In order to continue the strong influence of Catholic elementary education in the greater Windham area it is essential to increase enrollment and revenue. Sadly the phenomenon of decreasing enrollment in parochial schools is broadly experienced throughout the diocese and throughout the northeastern United States while in others parts of the US they flourish. I firmly believe that a strong Catholic elementary school is the foundation of a vibrant Catholic community and am making every effort to strengthen our school with a view to the long-term future of the Church in this area. Well, as the New York Times says on its masthead, that’s “all the news that’s fit to print”. It’s too bad, isn’t it, that the news that isn’t fit to print these days often captures the headlines and the attention of the gossip! Devotedly yours in Christ, (the WORD you can trust)
