PASTOR’S CORNER DATED MATERIAL
The peace of the Lord to
I really don’t get nearly enough time to study Scripture. I certainly have studied Scripture But it always amazes me that I always see something I never noticed before, or that it’s taken on a meaning I never really thought of. Certainly as we grow older, attend worship, increase our faithfulness in prayer, see others baptized, take and eat the Body and Blood of our Lord, listen to enough sermons or studies on line as we learn more, we begin to learn and understand Scripture at a much more profound level. I pray that you are doing that and growing in study. Paul wrote in his letter to Philemon: “I think God always when I remember you in my prayers.” And I do, each and every person that has been consistently associated with First Saint John’s Church. In addition to the prayer list insert in your weekly bulletin, I add pretty much everyone else to that list, in various considerations and pray over them daily. So many have contributed so much in many respects to this ministry and I certainly raise up a prayer for thanks for those who are in need. Those who have been missing. Thanks for those who do so much. Please keep me in prayer and I will keep all here in prayer. The Men’s Network will make the first showing of “The Case for Christ”, a full length feature movie that was just at the movie theatres. This is a great movie to take someone to who has questions, needs help understanding Jesus. The Holy Spirit moves us to know Jesus as our Savior. But sometimes he uses other’s experiences to show you Jesus. October 7at First Saint Johns, 6pm. Please invite friends, family, neighbors, everyone you know. There’s no charge and we’ll have to break out the pop-corn popper. In recognition of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation we are putting together a “Reformation Walk” which will be displayed on October 28 at First St Johns. We will be turning the buildings into 16 th century scenes from Germany. We need help with the scenes re-enactors, guides and general help. Please help us out with your time, talent and treasure. Ken Sanders and his group want to make this a real show piece to the York area. WYCO will be sponsoring a picnic to celebrate our first two years of operation, it’s been an amazing two years. Gordon and Joyce and all of the organization have done an amazing job of making this work and growing into a major force in the York area. All welcome September 23 starting at noon. It’s a great way to bring the First Saint John’s family together with the WYCO volunteers. Everyone is welcome no charge. On Sunday September 17, 3pm there is a circuit forum to be held at Redeemer in Parkton. The forum is a lead-up to the District convention next year. We need one lay delegate. Please let me know if you would like to be our delegate to the forum and to the convention in North Carolina next year. There’s a new water cooler in the corridor. Thanks to Elder Jose Montalvo for ordering and installing. Great job Jose. Jose’s application process is moving along for entry in the SMP at Fort Wayne. On acceptance we will hold a service to install Jose as a vicar here at FSJs. First Friday at First Saint Johns. Dan Nied of the York Time Institute will be kindly displaying large collection of antique phonograph players and original recordings on display and demonstration. These machines are in great shape and play the old discs and cylinders. You will be listening to original recordings dating back to the 1890s. Vastly different then listening to digital recordings of today. Much thanks to Dan for setting up this program. Finally the York County Sheriff’s Dept. will be holding a 5k race on September 23 at John Rudy Park to raise money for their canine program. Pastor’s corner in Spanish on page 9

SEPTEMBER 2017 PARISH VISITOR OCTOBER DEADLINE Articles Due September 15th - Friday Mail Date
Summer sure went fast. Autumn (Fall) begins on the twenty-second of September. The Fall and Winter schedule for First Saint John’s begins right away at the beginning of the month. The fellowship/coffee time happens again after church on Sunday, September 3. Choir will start up again on Wednesday, September 6, at 6:30 P.M. Confirmation instruction will begin on Sunday, September 10, at 9:00 A.M. This class is for students entering seventh grade and above. Also, on Sunday, September 10, there will be an outdoor worship service held on King Street at the front steps of the church. Be sure to bring your sunglasses. As we ask the community to join us in worship during our outdoor service, I am reminded of the hymn: "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say," a hymn that invites us to know the love of the lord. As always, information on this hymn comes from the booklet, Stories of the Christian Hymns. "I Heard The Voice of Jesus Say" was published by Dr. Horatius Bonar, eminent Scottish hymn-writer and preacher, in 1846. It is one of a long line of hymns encouraging the singer to hear the clear voice of God speaking out in a world of weariness to find rest, in a world of darkness to find light, in a world of fear to find faith. Bonar adds his voice to the many other clarion voices crying out in the cloudiness of a confused world to be assured that the truth of God is free to all who can hear and see; that the voice of Jesus cuts through like a bright beacon on a foggy shore. I hear the voice of Jesus say, 'come unto Me and rest.'"

STEWARDSHIP:
SEPTEMBER 2017“
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” (Eccl. 9:10). God bids us to be faithful in the tasks He calls us to do. He calls us to be members of a family (husbands and wives; fathers and mothers; sons and daughters). He calls us to be members of society (those who govern and those who are governed). And He calls us to be members of His family, the Church (those who preach and teach and those who hear and learn). Each of these callings from God places a duty on us. As members of a family, husbands are given the duty to die for their wives as Christ gave His life for His bride, the Church; while wives are given the duty to respect their husbands and submit themselves to them as the Church does to Christ. Fathers and mothers are to raise their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, teaching them the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Scriptures concerning Baptism, Confession, the Office of the Keys, and the Lord’s Supper. Children are to honor their parents throughout their lives, and even when their parents are no longer alive, serving and obeying them, loving and cherishing them, and speaking well of them. As members of society, God calls those who govern to bear the sword, that is, to punish those who do evil—those who live contrary to God’s will—and to reward those who do good—those whose lives are lived in conformity with God’s will. Those who are governed are to obey their leaders as to the Lord Himself, for their leaders bear the sword of God’s temporal justice for a purpose. As members of God’s own family, the Church, He calls those who preach and teach to do so in faithfulness to His holy Word. To preach and teach the Law of God to convict the hearts of hearers of their sin and to encourage, admonish, and exhort them to do good works in accordance with God’s will. They are to preach and teach the Gospel, the full forgiveness of their sins accomplished by Christ and received through faith, not by works. They are to administer the means of grace in accordance with the Gospel and the Word of God. They do all this for the young and old alike, for those who are near and far off. Those who hear and learn are to submit themselves to their preachers and teachers. They are to support them by their prayers and their gifts. Each of these callings from God places a duty on us. They make a claim on our presence, our prayers, and on our time, talents, and treasures. So, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” (Eccl 9:10). Pray for your family, for your government, and your church. Give of yourself by means of your time, your talents, and your treasures to your family, your government, and your Church. That is what it means to be faithful in the tasks that God has given us. That is what it means to do it with all your might.
