PASTOR’S CORNER The 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation is upon us. We started planning months ago, and we have things coming up and others are welcome to make suggestions and certainly to participate in the plans that we have been working on.

The graphic depicts the symbol that many wore on their clothes, uniforms, weapons, placed on buildings, that represented their support of the Lutheran Reformation at the time. Dr Martin Luther contended with the church regarding the issue of Scripture. The Roman church had lost its focus on Scripture and became guided by manmade traditions and directives from church leaders instead of trusting in Scripture first. The motto emphasizes that the Reformation was about Sola Scriptura , Scripture alone. One of the four ”Solas” of the Lutheran Church and the Reformation. 500th anniversaries are unusual, you don’t see one very often and in this case, this is in celebration of an era that reshaped the western world forever. Luther changed many of the aspects of how we live as Christians today. While our worship is similar to Roman Catholic worship, there are differences. It is always in the language of the congregation, not Latin. The order of worship is always according to Scripture. Check your “order of worship” in Sunday’s bulletin, you see Scripture references. Our order of worship refers us to the important parts of the Bible. When we leave worship we are reminded of, at least, the most important parts of being a Christian. Luther translated the Bible into the native language. Dr. Luther’s translation of the Bible into German was so highly regarded that it became the basis for the written German language. Vocation was a very important part of the Reformation. The Roman Church taught that there were important vocations. The religious; priests, monks, nuns, their vocation was more important, it gave them a Pass Go collect $200 by virtue of what they did. Dr Luther emphasized that we are placed in our vocation by God to serve Him in what we do. Whether that was the guy who cleaned the horse stables, the black smith, the town baker, mothers, fathers, all our relations are our vocations. God put us in those walks of life to best serve Him. Luther emphasized there weren’t separate/better/ worse, just all of us placed where we serve God and each other best. In observance of this event we have been planning an event here at First St Johns and to help Good Shepherd. We will hold a “Reformation Walk” here at First Saint Johns, where we will transform back to 1520, where you will start at the city gates of Wittenberg then to proceed to meet various people from the time Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the front door of Castle Church on All Saints Day 1517. We do need help to make this work. Our committee led by Minister of Music Ken Sanders along with Ed Abendschoen, Wayne and Nancy Hildebrand, Marge Driskell and others has been working the last few months to pull this together and make this a fun and learning experience. This will be on October 28 from 10am to 3pm. But we do need help; to be a character, to help with set up, and your financial support. Please let us know how you can help. Our brothers and sister over at Good Shepherd are entering a float in the Halloween Parade on October 29. They need help in putting the float together, which will be Reformation oriented. Let me know if you could help out there. As always much going on and while we are small we achieve much and mightily as God blesses us greatly and provides with a great group here at First Saint Johns. Continue to let others know and invite them to participate and be a part of all we do. May our Lord Jesus richly bless you.

When we think of the Reformation we naturally think of Martin Luther. Luther wrote many fine hymns and service music. He wrote more than 30 hymns in his lifetime. He was also a musician that played the lute, a type of guitar, and the flute. Two of his hymns that a good many people recognize are: "A Mighty Fortress," and "From Heaven Above." Remember the two special events for this special year: A Reformation Walk and the float at the annual Halloween Parade. Ken Sanders

STEWARDSHIP: OCTOBER 2017 “We are nearing the 500th Anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, All Saints’ Eve, 1517, when Martin Luther posted the Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. So, let’s hear from Luther himself on the topic of giving and stewardship. In the Small Catechism under the Table of Duties, Martin Luther gives specific Bible passages to help Christians know their duty in their various vocations as members of their family, society at large, and in God’s family, the Church. Under the heading “What Hearers Owe Their Pastors,” Luther lists five passages from the Bible, three of which have to do with giving to your local congregation. They are these: “The Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:14). “Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:6–7).
“The elders [presbyters, i.e., pastors] who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially whose work is preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, ‘Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain,’ and ‘The worker deserves his wages’” (1 Timothy 5:17–18). Luther comments on these passages in his 1535 Lectures on Galatians. He wrote: When Paul says “all good things,” this is not to be taken to mean that everyone should share all his possessions with his preacher. No, it means that he should provide for him liberally, giving him as much as is needed to support his life in comfort. . . . The apostle is so serious in advocating this topic of support for preachers that he adds a threat to his denunciation and exhortation, saying: “God is not mocked.”. . . All this pertains to the topic of support for ministers. I do not like to interpret such passages; for they seem to commend us, as in fact they do. In addition, it gives the appearance of greed if one emphasizes these things diligently to one’s hearers. Nevertheless, people should be taught also about this matter, in order that they may know that they owe both respect and support to their preachers. Christ teaches the same thing in Luke 10:7: “Eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages”; and Paul says elsewhere (1 Cor. 9:13–14): “Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? In the same way the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the Gospel should get their living by the Gospel.” It is important for us who are in the ministry to know this, so that we do not have a bad conscience about accepting for our work wages . . . it happens when those who proclaim the glory of God and faithfully instruct the youth derive their livelihood from them. It is impossible that one man should be devoted to household duties day and night for his support and at the same time pay attention to the study of Sacred Scripture, as the teaching ministry requires. Since God has commanded and instituted this, we should know that we may with a good conscience enjoy what is provided for the comfortable support of our lives from church properties to enable us to devote ourselves to our office. (LW 27:125–126).
ALTAR FLOWER - OPEN DATES

In other words, pastors are not to suffer from low wages just because they are servants of Christ and the Word. They are to share in the livelihoods of all to whom they preach the gospel and instruct in the faith, so that the Word can be proclaimed and the faith carried from one generation to the next.
