From Our Rector

2

Dear Friends, ABOUT MOVING TO THE NEW CATHEDRAL: I h ave r eceived 4 or 5 letters from people, who for various reasons, are finding the move to the new cathedral difficult. It will be impossible to please everyone. Rather than go on and on about this, I made the following decision so that we can move ahead for the whole parish. This is the message I am sending in response: “I have spoken enough about this. I have consulted with the Parish Council and with the Bishop and have prayed. I am in my 4th year as pastor. I feel, before God, what will be best for the entire parish is that we have the Sunday weekend Masses at the new cathedral. This will unify us at our new worship site. We will continue to have a daily Mass at Sacred Heart, Monday through Saturday. We will cherish the old church and keep it in excellent condition as I have been doing. I think this will be beneficial for everyone. I will feel badly about those who are unable to make the adjustment and will choose to go elsewhere. The decision is now made and we have to move on. I do not think it would be beneficial to waste more time on this matter. The arguing is over. I want to get excited about the beautiful new cathedral God is giving us for His glory. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Justin, C.P.” NEW YOUTH MINISTER – ELIZABETH QUEEN: W e h ave h ir ed Elizabeth to be our Minister primarily for High School students. She comes with very good recommendations and after a 4-month search and review of many applications and interviews. She graduated from UNC Greensboro with a BA in Religious Studies. She completed a 2-year program for a Certificate of Lay Ministry in Theology and Ministry. She has worked as a Youth Minister at both St. Aloysius Church in Hickory and Our Lady of Grace in Greensboro. She has coordinated youth retreats, mission trips, Marches for Life, conferences etc. Elizabeth is also familiar with Life Teen and has served as a catechist. She wrote me a beautiful letter stating how passionate she is about Youth Ministry and how important it is for teenagers to connect with the Church. I had a long conversation with her Pastor who has known her for 10 years. He assured me that she will meet our expectations. Elizabeth Queen will arrive to begin her work for our teens on August 29th.

BISHOP BURBIDGE – 10TH ANNIVERSARY AS BISHOP OF RALEIGH: On Th u r sday, Au gust 4th, our Bishop completed 10 years of service as head of the Raleigh Diocese. It was the feast of St. John Vianney, a dedicated and holy parish priest. We congratulate Bishop for all the loving service he has given the Church of Raleigh. He has been for me such a great example of a compassionate loving Pastor. He works hard and gives of himself selflessly. It has been my honor to have served on his Pastoral Council and as a Dean for 7 years in Tar River and 3 years in Raleigh. I thank him in the name of everyone for his love and care of us and for his work in building our new Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral.

OUR NEW CATHEDRAL PROGRESSES: Th e dom e of the new cath edr al now towers over the whole area. The parking lot is being prepared. Roads are all delineated. Pullen Rd extension is being built to connect the Downtown and Centennial Campuses of NC State. To see all the brick work completed is amazing. Our building committee is coming together after a respite and little vacation to plan the ground breaking of our gym/hall. The work is being blessed!!! In Christ,

Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Because of it the ancients were well attested. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he sojourned in the promised land as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs of the same promise; for he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and maker is God. By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age —and Sarah herself was sterile—for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy. So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead, descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the seashore. -The Word of the Lord.

R. Thanks be to God.

Alleluia R. Alleluia, alleluia! Stay awake and be ready! For you do not know on what day your Lord will come. R. Alleluia, alleluia! Gospel Lk 12:35-40 Jesus said to his disciples: “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have the servants recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.

PROJECT RACHEL SUPPORT GROUP Abortion is one of the most common procedures in the US, experienced by millions of women, many of whom are Catholic. Abortion creates a wound in postabortive women, (and men) resulting in spiritual and emotional problems. The Project Rachel ministry assists women and men who have been wounded by abortion to find truth and healing. There is a support group beginning in the Triangle area in August. If you have experienced an abortion and would like more information about the support group, contact Project Rachel at (919) 852 -1021 or email [email protected]. For more information go to http:// projectrachelnc.org/. Calls and appointments are kept strictly confidential.

Week 19: I can hear my mother’s heartbeat and some other funny noises she makes. I’m beginning to know her voice. My umbilical cord (that’s where I get my food from) is really awesome – an engineering marvel. Gabriela’s umbilical cord transports 300 quarts of fluid per day and completes a roundtrip of fluids every 30 seconds. Wow! I like sucking my thumb. Mom is probably starting to “show” now.

Stress in Your Marriage? – Retrouvaille is a program for married couples that feel bored, disillusioned, frustrated, or angry in their marriage. Some experience coldness. Others experience conflict in their relationship. Most don’t know how to change the situation. This program has helped many couples experiencing such difficulties. For confidential information or to apply to attend the program beginning with a weekend on September 16th call 800-470-2230 or email: [email protected] or visit the web site at www.retrouvaille.org.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING NFP methods represent authentic family planning. They can be used to both achieve and to postpone a pregnancy. NFP makes use of periodic abstinence from sexual intercourse based upon the observation of the woman’s natural signs of fertility, in order to space births or to limit the number of children when there is a serious reason to do so… this practice fosters in couples an attitude of respect and wonder in the face of human life, which is sacred. It also fosters profound respect for one’s spouse, which is necessary for… authentic intimacy. (Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2009, p. 20)

. .he went out, not knowing where he was to go. --Hebrews 11:8

My husband, Chris, often likes to invoke a favorite thought that “if you want to make God laugh, tell God your plans.” I am sure that Abraham, as a family man, wouldn’t have normally taken his entire family on a path into unknown territory without a plan. Yet, we have, in the story of his decision to do so, an example of his great faith. In the Old Testament, the notion of faith centers on the belief in God’s reliability. In the New Testament, faith is identified with accepting Jesus as coming from God. Furthermore, faith in Jesus as the One Sent requires that the believer follow the pattern of Jesus’ life. And one of the principal weavings in Jesus life is the path of peace. Yesterday, August 6, in 1945, at 8:16 a.m. Japanese time, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, dropped the world’s first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people were killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 were injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout. Of the city’s 200 doctors before the explosion; only 20 were left alive or capable of working. There were 1,780 nurses before—only 150 remained who were able to tend to the sick and dying. According to John Hersey’s classic work Hiroshima, the Hiroshima city government had put hundreds of schoolgirls to work clearing fire lanes in the event of incendiary bomb attacks. They were out in the open when the Enola Gay dropped its load. War spares no one. Pope Francis reflects on war in his 9/13/14 homily at Sacrario Militare di Redipuglia, Redipuglia, Italy. His words: “Above the entrance to this cemetery, there hangs in the air those ironic words of war, ‘What does it matter to me?’ Each one of the dead buried here had their own plans, their own dreams... but their lives were cut short. Why? Why did humanity say, ‘What does it matter to me?’ . . . Cain would say, ‘Am I my brother’s keeper?’ The attitude is the exact opposite of what Jesus asks of us in the Gospel. We have heard: he is in the least of his brothers; he, the King, the Judge of the world, he is the one who hungers, who thirsts, he is the stranger, the one who is sick, the prisoner.... The one who cares for his brother or sister enters into the joy of the Lord; the one who does not do so, however, who by his omissions says, ‘What does it matter to me?’ remains excluded.” http://deadpresidents.tumblr.com/post/97454117417/after-experiencing-the-beauty-of-traveling

THE CIVIL HANDLING OF MIGRATION “The handling of the complex phenomenon of migration calls for great wisdom and compassion, in order to overcome fear and to achieve the greater good. … Needed is a spirit of readiness to welcome those fleeing from wars and hunger, and solidarity with those deprived of their fundamental rights, including the right to profess one’s faith in freedom and safety. At the same time, new forms of exchange and cooperation need to be developed on the international level in order to resolve the conflicts and wars that force so many people to leave their homes and their native lands. This means doing everything possible to alleviate the suffering while tirelessly working with wisdom and constancy for justice and peace, bearing witness in practice to human and Christian values.” … Pope Francis, Address to Civil Authorities, July 27, 2016 Please support the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Migration and Refugee Services (www.usccb.org/about/migration-and-refugee-services/) and Raleigh Diocesan Catholic Charities (www.catholiccharitiesraleigh.org).
