Parish Mission Statement Our Lady of Good Counsel parish is a Roman Catholic Community of Faith founded by the Augustinian Friars in 1899. Called by God to proclaim and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ through our celebration of the Word and Sacraments. From the Pastor’s Desk Fourth Sunday of Easter

Theme: “Perseverance in Time of Trials” Today is the fourth Sunday of Easter. We are called to reflect on the importance of perseverance when life becomes tough and unbearable. Unfortunately, we are told that day by day, life can be a joyous experience. The commercials on television assure us that it will be fine and easy if we buy what they try to sell us. Also, psychologists assert that the learning process in school, home, life, job and religion/faith should all be one joyous experience! These advertisements and theories about life are good. A good question could be, what happens if circumstances prevent our lives from being joyous all the time? The greater the expectations, the greater the degree of disappointment can be. We expect a great deal from God (He also expects a great deal from us). We usually expect from God what only God can give—and some more besides. Among these expectations of ours is the one which holds that God should protect us from all harm. The God who has formed a covenant with us should also provide for us and defend us in times of stress. Some go even further. They hold that God should allow no trial or suffering to come our way at all. We should focus our attention this week on the readings which speak of persecutions and tribulations. continued on page 3

Estamos llamados a reflexionar sobre la importancia de la perseverancia cuando la vida se vuelve dura e insoportable. Desafortunadamente, se nos dice que día a día, la vida puede ser una experiencia feliz. Los anuncios en televisión nos aseguran que será bueno y fácil si compramos lo que intentan vendernos. Además, los psicólogos afirman que el proceso de aprendizaje en la escuela, el hogar, la vida, el trabajo y la religión / fe debe ser una experiencia feliz. Estas publicidades y teorías sobre la vida son buenas. Una buena pregunta podría ser, ¿qué sucede si las circunstancias impiden que nuestras vidas sean felices todo el tiempo? May 12, 2019 (Continued from page 1) Our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, (13: 14, 43-42) is about the trials and persecutions of Paul and Barnabas. They worked very hard and many people were converted to Christianity. The religious leaders became jealous and turned some of the mobs in the city against Paul and Barnabas. We may ask why didn’t God come immediately to their defense and rescue? At times misfortunes comes to us to test us in order to see if we can really persevere in our faith to Our Lord Jesus Christ. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” (James 1:2) James is telling us that in spite of the fact that trials can be severe and painful, we can see through our tears and realize by faith that God has a good intention in taking us through this sorrow. We can realize that the trial will produce perseverance and help to make us mature and complete.

Our second reading from the blood of revelation contains the great scene in which those who have “survived the great period of trial” are now safe in the presence of God. The Lamb has won the victory. “He will lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe every tear from their eyes.” And our own ears as well. This gives more hope and strength to persevere on our trials and persecutions. The gospel of (John 10: 27-30), employs the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The Shepherds always find themselves in vulnerable positions. The wolf is always ready to snatch the sheep away. Too often the shepherd is nothing but a hired hand. In the face of danger, he flees because he prefers his life to the sheep. Money is never enough to evoke the kind of courage and commitment necessary to resist the evil one. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who cares for those who follow him and hear his voice. This care requires even the giving up of his life. Jesus’ followers may have to do the same in order to remain faithful to him. But even in the face of death, God’s love is at work saving and bringing home all who hear his voice and respond, “Know them, and they follow me.” I give them eternal life and they shall never perish. Unfortunately, I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them in as well, and they will listen to my mine voice. Then there will be one flock and one shepherd. (John 10:16) My brothers and sisters, as we walk towards Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday, even in the darkness of our trials and persecutions, let us preserve in listening to the voice of Our Good Shepherd and persevere in our tribulations. He wants us to recognize ourselves as His, as belonging to Him. He expects us to listen to His voice— His voice leading us. His voice showing us the way how to follow Him. His voice calling us back whenever we go astray. His voice assuring us that He cares for us, His voice promising to us that we will live forever.

Podemos darnos cuenta de que la prueba producirá perseverancia y ayudará a que s madure y se complete. Nuestra segunda lectura de la sangre de la revelación contiene la gran escena en la que aquellos que han “sobrevivido al gran período de prueba” ahora están a salvo en la presencia de Dios. El Cordero ha ganado la victoria. “Él los guiará a manantiales de agua que da vida, y Dios limpiará cada lágrima de sus ojos.” Y también nuestros propios oídos. Esto da más esperanza y fortaleza para perseverar en nuestras pruebas y persecuciones. El evangelio de (Juan 10: 27-30), emplea la imagen de Jesús como el Buen Pastor. Los pastores siempre se encuentran en posiciones vulnerables. El lobo siempre está listo para arrebatar las ovejas. Con demasiada frecuencia, el pastor no es más que una mano contratada. Ante el peligro, huye porque prefiere su vida a las ovejas. El dinero nunca es suficiente para evocar el tipo de coraje y compromiso necesarios para resistir al maligno. Jesús es el Buen Pastor que se preocupa por aquellos que lo siguen y escuchan su voz. Este cuidado requiere incluso la entrega de su vida. Los seguidores de Jesús pueden tener que hacer lo mismo para permanecer fieles a él. Pero incluso frente a la muerte, el amor de Dios trabaja salvando y trayendo a casa a todos los que escuchan su voz y responden: “Conócelos y me siguen.” Les doy vida eterna y nunca perecerán.
