PASTOR’S Reflection
B
the spiritual death which is manifested
reaking Open the Word in the inability to be in the Presence of God. In His infinite Wisdom, He of God:
Dear brothers and Sisters, the message that we can infer from this Sunday readings has to do with the fact that we must continue preparing ourselves for the coming of Christ into our lives. The first reading comes from a prophetic song. In it, God promised to bring back from exile his Jewish people, who were in Babylon. In a certain sense, this event mirrors God’s creation of man. Because of our first parents’ disobedience, Satan became prince of this world. Because of sin, we were all destined to experience a spiritual death which would prevent us from the eternal holy vision of God. But, through the Blood of Christ, we have been liberated from our exile. Jesus legitimately recovered the earthly Kingdom after being crowned King of Kings during His triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Freed from Satan’s dominance through our faith in Christ and the gifts of a new heart, a new spirit and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which happens at the sacrament of Baptism, we have become members of the Body of Christ, the new earth where Jesus has established his spiritual kingdom. The first Reading begins by saying “Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery; put on the splendor of glory from God forever.” Which is the clothing of our mourning and misery? What does it mean when it says to put on the splendor of glory from God forever? The robes of mourning and misery is death and suffering. Because of Adam’s sin, humanity was destined to experience
opened a new door for those who welcomed it. That door was opened through faith in Jesus Christ and the Sacrament of Baptism. Through Christ, God has manifested His mercy and justice toward all of mankind. Through Jesus, God incarnate, the glory of God can be seen. In the Gospel Reading we hear the words of John the Baptist: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” These words run parallel to those of the first reading from the prophet Baruch, and the prophecies in the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah. These words warn the people to be ready for the end of their exile so God’s salvation can be within their reach. Today we know that these prophetic words have been fulfilled through the death, resurrection and ascension of Christ.
W
alking together as brothers and sisters:
Dear brothers and Sisters, I invite you to meditate on the following questions this next week, as preparation during Advent: Is it clear to me that my Christian life depends of my relationship with my brothers and sisters? Am I able to see in them the presence of God who calls me to build His kingdom? Are we preparing our souls to celebrate the coming of the Lord which we celebrate on Christmas Day? Have we prepared our souls in order to present ourselves before the Lord should death come to us unexpectedly? What if the end of the world were today and Jesus came today, how have we prepared our hearts for this great moment? I hope each of these questions can help us to prepare our hearts to receive Jesus. Fr. José Gerardo Alberto, MSpS

Conchita, Tell Us about Your Life The Foundation of the Sisters of the Cross of the Sacred Heart f Jesus To say that Conchita Cabrera de Armida was an extraordinary woman is an understatement. From the time she was very young, she was drawn to prayer –to the Lord. When she married Francisco Armida at age 22, the Lord called her in extraordinary ways and showered her with graces in preparation for the work He wanted her to do for the Church. It’s hard to even imagine a relationship with the Lord so that you talk to Him as you would a best friend, but that is what Conchita did. In 1894 as she prayed in her Church, Templo de la Compania, in San Luis Potosi, she felt the Lord beside her telling her about the founding of a community of religious women. He gave her a vision of a procession of women dressed in white with a red cross on their backs walking in 2’s. She heard Jesus say, ‘There shall be a congregation which shall be called the Oasis because there is where I shall rest.’ So, Conchita, a lay woman, went about trying to establish a religious community of sisters. You can imagine how Church leaders in 1894 viewed her requests! Conchita kept asking, ‘Lord, how long before the Oasis comes to be?’ But the Lord tested her patience making her wait three years before that would happen. In 1897 Conchita, who now lived in Mexico City, and Father Mir (her spiritual director) decided it was time to look for vocations to begin the foundation of the Oasis. They found three women from the Apostleship of the Cross who stood out in their love of the Lord and were willing to establish the first convent. So, on May 3, 1897 the first Oasis was founded on Calle de Popolta #24. Conchita was present for the Mass and the blessing of the convent of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Cross of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Lord told Conchita that the main purpose of the Sisters was to be the Adoration of the Eucharist. The Sisters’ life would be spent in contemplation and Adoration of the Holy Eucharist –offering their lives for the Church and for priests. Conchita’s Sisters of the Cross of the Sacred Heart of Jesus continue today as they did in the time of Conchita ‘becoming a permanent offering to the Father, on behalf of the Church and the world.’ (Risking the Future, p21)
P. Gerardo Alberto, MSpS

A WAITING HARVEST
Vocation Awareness
This is just what Priests do! Priests Counsel and Guide the Suffering A woman I knew has many problems as Job. She had so much suffering in her life that whenever something new would happen, which was often, I would say, “Lord, what next? Please give her a break.” She would come in from time to time to talk and get advice on many layers of difficulties in her life: problems with her health , her children, her job, and her husband. She asked me one time, “Father, why does life have to be so hard?” At the end of one of our counseling sessions, the lady said something to me that I will never forget. She said, “Father, thank you for being a Simon of Cyrene for me.” I did not know what she meant, so she explained,” When I walked in here today, I was carrying a very heavy cross. It was crushing me.
But when I came in to your office, I gave you this cross to hold for me while I talked. You simply listened, you cared, and you gave me some good advice. And now, at the end of an hour, you have given the cross back to me. You know that you cannot keep it. But you helped me today, just as Simon of Cyrene helped Jesus with his cross, and for that, I thank you.” This is just what priests do. From the Book “To Save a Thousand Souls” Fr. Brett A. Brannen
O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more our priests, And those consecrated in the religious life.
This week please pray for Joseph Tapia-Beeman Joseph is from Renton. He is a seminarian with the Archdiocese of Seattle. He is taking College III classes at Gonzaga University.
We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart. Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them! T y p o l o g y The Second Week of Advent: Remaining Faithful to Christ Kianna Garmanian
My dearest brothers and sisters in Christ, happy second week of advent! I hope this past week has been fruitful and that you have been able to reflect on your relationship with Christ, the meaning of the advent season, and hope for our Lord’s coming. Again, like last week, I invite you to spend 15-30 minutes in prayer with the reflection questions I will share. There is nothing more important we can do on this earth than to enrich our souls with the grace of God, which comes from living a virtuous life. As pilgrims on our journey to eternal life with Christ Jesus, we must be aware of our spiritual health and well-being. Prayer is the source and gift that will strengthen the soul and breathe new life into your spirit. That is why it is so important and of great value to set aside specific moments throughout your day/ week to pray or visit Jesus in Adoration. The theme for this second week of advent is FAITH. As we prepare our hearts for Christ, here are some questions to reflect on: Have I remained faithful to Christ in my everyday life? What are specific ways I have succeeded in being faithful to our Lord? What are specific ways I have failed to be faithful to our Lord? How can I improve in the future? Think about Mary’s situation when the angel Gabriel appeared to her…. How much faith and trust in the Lord it took to say “yes” to God’s call. How can Our Blessed Mother’s faith inspire me in my own life? Am I setting aside time for prayer each week? How can prayer help deepen my faith in Christ? As a son/daughter of Christ, how can I best serve him in my daily life? Faith in Jesus is the act of believing without seeing, of trusting without fully knowing, and of consecrating oneself to the heart of our Lord. Let’s face itremaining faithful to Christ can often be quite difficult. Especially when we can’t see the full picture or don’t understand the events/circumstances that occur in our lives, it may be challenging to keep our heads held high. Maybe you are carrying a cross that seems too overbearing or you are stuck in the midst of a difficult decision. Whatever challenge you face, I urge you to stay strong. Keep fighting on for Christ, for our dear Lord who is ALWAYS faithful to us. I believe in

With the Heart of Jesus
In the Eucharist we find all the good of the Church. In it we have the certainty that God is faithful to His promise and stays with us until the end of time. In our visits and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, we experience the closeness of the good shepherd, the tenderness of His love, the presence of a faithful friend. We all experience this large support in our lives provided by faith and our personal and intimate dialogue with the Lord in the Eucharist. Come Adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Monday through Friday from 10am to 9pm.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Our SEAS Parish is filled with generosity, mercy, and love, and this is very evident in your support of our Prayer Shawl Ministry. Thank you to all who have knitted or are knitting/crocheting Prayer Shawls for those who are so often alone or suffering illness or loss. Just so you will understand the impact of what you do, I am posting a note from a lady in Assisted Living who just received a beautiful shawl: “Thank you Nancy for your good start to my day. If you see Joan, would you please tell her special thanks for her care and time on behalf of the Prayer Shawl Project. It is very much my blessing to receive a beautiful (knitted with prayer and lovely thoughts) Prayer Shawl by Lee. Having a shawl as protection and support, as well as comfort, means so much to me. I will treasure this gift and it is valued as “my key” to open my day with prayer. Thank you, Nancy, for your caring heart and to you Joan for your warm efforts to care for others. Please let Lee know that her shawl brings me closer to Jesus each morning as I pray.” Thank you for knitting the shawls and for donating yarn. Please let me know your name when you do turn in yarn or shawls as I want to thank you properly. Bless you, Joan Kluck We have need of the following items for the Christmas baskets: biscuit or muffin mixes, brown sugar, boxed rice mix, canned yams, canned fruit (pineapple, peaches, pears), cranberry sauce, soup, brownie and/or cookie mixes. During this Christmas season...give the gift of Presence
There is something in your Presence that just does not compare with anything else. It is not merely the words you say. It is not merely the things you do. It is who you are that is there – body, mind, heart and soul, all of you that the other person gets to sense and witness, even before you say a single word. This is just what many people need today, especially during the holidays. Time. Availability. Presence You can give another person all the money in the world, but it could never compare to the gift of your Presence. Let us celebrate the true meaning of Christmas and bring the gift of Presence to someone who is grieving, alone or hurting. The world is full of people who would cherish YOUR gift of Presence. If you know someone who is alone and would love the gift of Presence, please contact the Good Samaritan Ministry at:
