Check Floating Scam Getting paid with a bogus check is bad enough, but it’s even worse when the check writer cons an online seller into handing over cash as part of the transaction. In the Check Floating Scam, a fraudster seeking to buy an item posted for sale – in a classified or online ad, auction site or other posting – sends a check to the seller, often a senior. The scammer then directs the seller to wire some of the money back, usually because the check was written for more than the sale price. The victim sends the money during the floating period – the time after the check is deposited but before it clears. By the time the victim learns the check is invalid or has bounced, the scammer has already made off with the cash. Here are helpful tips to avoid being a victim of the Check Floating Scam: 1 - When depositing a check, never assume the money is there until the bank says it is. 2 - Don’t give goods to a buyer until a check has cleared. 3 – Never wire funds to someone you don’t know. If you or someone you know has been the victim of a scam, please contact Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. Phone: (213) 974-3512, TTY: (800) 457-7778 or visit www.da.lacounty.gov. Checklist for Preventing Falls at Home Many falls can be prevented. To reduce the risk of falls at home, all seniors should follow this checklist created by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). FLOOR: Keep small objects such as books or bags off of the floor. Keep telephone cords/electrical wires close to the wall. Avoid using throw rugs, they can become a trip hazard. Make sure there’s no furniture blocking your path from the front door to the living room, bedroom, and kitchen. BEDROOM: Keep a lamp by the bed so that you do not need to walk in the dark to turn on the light. Use a nightlight. Keep a clear path from your bed to the bathroom to prevent falls when using the toilet at night. BATHROOM: If the bathtub is slippery for you, use a non-slip rubber mat. For additional support, use a shower bench when showering. KITCHEN: Keep things that you use often on your lower kitchen cabinets. If you need to reach the top cabinets, ask your caregiver/family to assist you or use a sturdy step stool. Install grab bars in the shower or by the toilet, it needed. For more information, visit the CDC website: www.cdc.gov/steadi/patient.html. Additionally, the Tom Bradley Center nd rd for Healthcare on the 2 floor of Agape Building offers a monthly fall prevention clinic. You can attend every 3 Tuesday of the month from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
