Paul’s Ponders The passing of President George Bush last week touched many of us. He seemed to be a man who believed in God and prayer. Over the past week we have seen a lot of pageantry surrounding his laying in state. There was a lot of formality, pomp and circumstance. It seemed important that President Bush receive a fitting funeral. People from all over came to “pay their respects”. It made me think of the parable of Jesus from Luke 16 about two men who died, one a rich man and the other a poor beggar. 22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. I am sure the rich man had a fitting funeral. The poor beggar was probably thrown into a mass grave. Unlike all the hoopla surrounding the funeral, the other side of the casket is what is really important. I may not have world coverage of my funeral. I don’t think I will care. What is really important is the reception on the other side. That’s a party I don’t want to miss. Known by masses or thrown in a mass grave doesn’t matter when it is all said and done. God knows me and welcomes me is the greatest tribute of all.
