Welcome back! I am very pleased to write about the smooth start The Spanish School has had to the new school year. Our school was filled with the excitement of new beginnings, the anticipation of new learning and the opportunity to connect with old friends and make new friends. Being with our students and staff is one of the many things that serve as a constant reminder of what a privilege it is to be able to serve as Head of School. A lot of improvements we had in our building, and teachers worked hard to set their classrooms before school starts. We are fortunate that we have a strong teaching staff that are well experienced and yet are open to new and innovative ideas. We are also fortunate to have supportive parents who play an important role in their children education. This year our goals will be to become an authorized International Baccalaureate school, to implement the Positive Behavioral Support program, and to provide engaging and differentiated instructional strategies by which children can be successful.

Positive Behavior Support During the first week of school our students were learning what means to be Responsible and Respectful with others. Teaching, re-teaching and practicing those two concepts, all year long, will help us to prevent and avoid inappropriate behaviors.

Estimadas Familias, Bienvenido de nuevo! Estoy muy contento de escribir sobre el arranque exitoso de la Escuela de Español en el nuevo año escolar. Nuestra escuela se llenó del entusiasmo con los nuevos ingresos, la anticipación de un nuevo aprendizaje y la oportunidad de conectar con viejos amigos y hacer nuevos amigos. Estar con nuestros estudiantes y personal es una de las muchas cosas que me sirven como un recordatorio constante de lo privilegiada que soy por poder servir como Director de la Escuela. Una gran cantidad de mejoras hemos tenido en nuestro edificio este verano y los profesores trabajaron duro para establecer sus salones de clase antes de que comezara la escuela. Somos afortunados de que tenemos un personal docente dedciado con mucha experiencia y, que están abiertos a ideas nuevas e innovadoras. También tenemos la suerte de tener padres que apoyan pues desempeñan un papel importante en la educación de sus hijos. Este año nuestros objetivos será convertirnos en una escuela autorizada del Bachillerato Internacional, implementar el programa de Apoyo Conductual Positivo, (PBS) y proporcionar estrategias de enseñanza atractivas y diferenciadas por el cual los niños pueden tener éxito. Espero con interés trabajar con usted como socios en la educación de su hijo.

We thank you all for the support you provide at home by telling your child that when someone is bothering him/her/others, students should report those incidents to the teacher or any adult person. We want to request to our parents to promote positive behaviors and attitudes in the interaction with other classmates. Responsive reactions help to make problems bigger. We are sure that both, parents and staff, wish the same for our students: a Safe, Friendly and Learning Community.

Getting to know the Specialist Teachers

Latin - Ana Ruiz Manzano

Library- Yuri Casas

Ana is an extremely skilled, experienced and professional Molecular Biology Assistant Professor at Washington University School of Medicine, with extensive knowledge of conducting research and teaching Biology and Chemistry. She has a long scientific carrier and a wide experience as a researcher accumulated over 8 years of working in internationally recognized scientific institutions. As part of the aims for her Latin class with our 4th grade students are: Learn that Latin is the root of roman languages like Spanish and that it had a lot of influence in the English language. Also, help pupils understand grammar, extend their vocabulary and discover the meaning of new words following the latin roots.

Yuri hold a Bachelor of Librarian & Education from the National University of San Marcos, in Lima Peru. He has more than ten years of experience as librarian.

Physical Education- Christopher Barker This will be Christopher’s second year at SLLIS teaching the PE class. Christopher hold a Bachelor of Arts, History with Minor, Spanish in Spanish from Truman State University. He is very enthusiastic. Yoga (PE+)- Mary Densmore Mary graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in Speech Communication. She has played sports, coached, and spent significant time in Central America facilitating cooperative games with children. Previously taught the PE class, but now she is learning the practice of Yoga and is enthused to be sharing all that she is learning with the students as she teaches the new Yoga class.

English Language Art-Madison Brown Madison hold a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature emphasis in Creative Writing, Minor in Business Administration. Madison is a certified teacher in Secondary English Language Arts Grades 5-12. She was a substitute teacher at Clayton School District.

Art-Perla Rivera Perla hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education. She has a Missouri Initial Professional Certificate, K-12. The last school year she was a Kindergarten teacher at SLLIS.

Music- Philip Brotherton Philip hold a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish and Music from the Southeast Missouri State University. He participated one year in a research-intensive Ph.D. program in Musicology/Music History. Currently, he is in the first semester of the Masters of Secondary Education program with an emphasis in TESOL.

English Language Learners- Jill Meyer Jill hold a Master of Arts in Special Education. She posses a Teacher Certification in Bilingual Multicultural Education from the University of Northern Colorado. May 2010

Attendance and Absences/Asistencia y Ausencias A common characteristic of the academically successful student is excellent attendance. Unsuccessful students frequently have poor attendance records. Students who do not practice good habits of punctuality, self- discipline, and responsibility rarely do as well as they should academically.

Una característica común de los estudiantes académicamente exitosos es una excelente asistencia. Estudiantes que no aprueban a menudo tienen mal historial de asistencia. Parents are encouraged to recognize the importance of having their students in class, and on time, every day except when it is absolutely necessary for the student to be absent. Neither the parents nor the school should approve of a student being absent from class unless there is a serious reason, such as illness.

When it is necessary for a student to be absent from school, parents are expected to call at 314-533-0975 prior to 9:30 am EACH DAY OF THE ABSENCE. All absences not accompanied by a call will be considered unexcused.

School begins promptly at 8:40 am. At this time, all students should be in class. If your child is having breakfast at school, please drop-off your student at 8:15 am he/she will have a quiet breakfast and will be on time in class. Cafeteria is closed at 8:30am, after this time only students riding the bus can go to the cafeteria when the bus arrives at school.

Wear the Uniform/Viste el uniforme Our uniform provides a great look for the school while helping students to learn about appropriate dress. This process will provide yet another learning opportunity for our students and the chance to involve the entire school community in the decision making process. Additional procedures and rules may be added as the need arises. UNIFORM COLORS The uniform colors are red, light blue, navy, gray, and white THE UNIFORM On normal school days students will wear: 1. Navy or gray bottoms (pants, shorts, skorts, skirts, or jumpers) 2. Button down shirts in uniform color 3. Tie in uniform color 4. Optional sweater or vest in uniform color

Footwear Students will wear shoes with socks or tights in uniform colors. * SLLIS does not use flags or other nationalistic markers in our materials (logo, decor, ads, uniforms, etc.). This is a common practice among agencies that serve New Americans and demonstrates respect for the variety of political experiences that they may have had in their country of origin. This policy does not ban any particular combination of colors. It simply provides all students the ability to choose combinations that they are at ease wearing.
