The Purpose
The purpose of the Reading Program is to encourage United Methodist Women members: • to expand understanding of and participation in God’s mission; • to increase sensitivity to all human beings — their needs, interests and concerns; • to encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today; • to grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life; • to enhance self-knowledge and to act from that knowledge; and • to strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission.
About the books
The United Methodist Women Reading Program Committee chooses the books. Suggestions come from many sources. Three evaluators (local members of United Methodist Women) read each book before the committee reviews it. The Reading Program does not intend that readers accept each word or idea contained within each volume. Some books you may agree with. Some you may not. Either is all right.

How to secure books from the reading program list
Books on the 2013 Reading Program list are stocked at the Mission Resource Center unless noted otherwise.
Some older books may not be available at the Mission Resource Center. Other sources include the public library, online services and Reading Program books already purchased by your unit.
Most books are available in September. Prices and availability are subject to change by publishers.
The books vary in level of difficultiy, type of print and in suitability for study/ discussion.

How to participate
• Present book reviews at United Methodist Women group meetings and on the online community. • Take Reading Program books and response to retirement and nursing homes. Read regularly to residents. • Inform parents, grandparents and Sunday school teachers that books for children and youth are available through the Reading Program. • Highlight large print books, pages 1517 and book listings available for the visually impaired, page 47. • Honor those who participate in the Reading Program. Order Reading Program certificates (#1531, 25 for $4) from the Mission Resource Center to present to those who complete reading plans. • Display progress charts in a prominent place, showing readers’ names, books being read and the reading plans being followed. • Show special recognition to groups and/or individuals who complete Plans III and IV. • Capture interest by attractively mounting quotations from Reading Program books and posting them throughout the church. Include title, author name and publisher, year title was featured on list. • Develop displays — permanent and portable — to encourage book sales, especially around holiday seasons and vacation times.
Any person who wants to participate in the Reading Program should follow one of the plans on page 30. When the required number of books and magazines have been read, readers are to report their reading to their secretaries of program resources. Secretaries of program resources work with the United Methodist Women executive committee to promote the program. They should: • Explain Reading Program procedures and enroll individuals in the program; • Use Suggestions for Action, page 32, as a guide for choosing titles and mission responses; • Secure books and circulate them among unit and circle members; • Distribute copies of this catalog; • Direct members to the Reading Program Online Community at http:// reading.umwonline.net; and • Order copies of the brochure “Your Reading Program” (#M5016, free for postage and handling) so members can report their reading (also available to download at missionresourcecenter.com).
The Bible undergirds all Christian reading including that of the Reading Program. response, essential reading for understanding the mission of United Methodist Women, is part of all four reading plans.
Promotional ideas for local and district GROUPS
The reading program leads to action!
For 140 years, members of United Methodist Women and predecessor organizations have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. Here are a few suggestions to assist you.
• Join the Reading Program Online Community. • Form an action team to address issues discussed in one or more books. • Start a reading group of adults and/ or children or youth. Meet regularly to share and discuss the books members are reading.

1. Pray. Books often raise concerns about people, countries and issues. Bring these concerns to God during your prayer time at home and at group meetings. 2. Host a program. For example, a locally–sponsored program on the environment could help the church and community explore ways to be better stewards of God’s Earth. Read and discuss A Hopeful Earth.

Reúnanse periódicamente para conversar sobre los libros que los miembros del grupo están leyendo.
Cualquier persona que desee participar en el Programa de Lectura debe seguir uno de los cuatro planes en la página 34. Cuando haya leído el número necesario de libros y revistas, infórmele a su secretaria de recursos para programa. La secretaria de recursos para programa trabaja con el comité ejecutivo en la promoción del Programa de Lectura y es responsable de:

• Presenten reseñas/comentarios breves sobre los libros del Programa de Lectura durante las reuniones de su grupo y en la comunidad online. • Lleven libros del Programa de Lectura y la revista response a los hogares de ancianos. Compartan lecturas de esos recursos con los residentes. • Díganles a los padres, abuelos y otras personas con niños y/o jóvenes o a cargo de niños que pueden conseguir libros para niños y/o jóvenes a través del Programa de Lectura. Compartan esta información con maestros/as de Escuela Dominical. • Reconozcan a las personas que participan en el Programa de Lectura. Pueden ordenar a través del Centro de Recursos Misionales certificados del Programa de Lectura (#1531; 25 certificados por $4) para aquellas personas que completen un programa de lectura. • Preparen una gráfica en un lugar bien accesible con los nombres de las lectoras, los libros que están leyendo y los planes de lectura que están siguiendo. • Reconozcan en forma especial a los grupos/personas que completen los Planes III o IV. • Promuevan el programa mediante citas de diferentes libros del Programa de Lectura. Escríbanlas en letras bien grandes y atractivas y cuélguenlas en diferentes sitios por todo el templo. Las Mujeres Metodistas Unidas y organizaciones precedentes han participado activamente en la misión a través de la oración, el estudio y la acción por casi 140 años.
