EXCITEMENT AWAITS BLUE ISLAND PATRONS OF ALL ages who participate in the Summer Reading Program. Pick up your reading log at the Reference or Children’s Desk. Receive one raffle ticket for every book read. Prizes will be drawn randomly at the conclusion of summer reading. All participants are invited to the end of Summer Reading Party on July 27th.

Chicago Food Depository, will provide free lunches to individuals ages 18 and under every week at 12-1PM,

6/10 MON - 8/2 FRI @ 12-1pm:

7/27 SAT @ 2-3pm:

Free lunches to youth up to age 18.

Celebrate the end of Summer Reading with an all-ages magic show that includes live animals. Participate in the show for a small prize, and watch an audience member float in mid-air! This amazing performance is not to be missed!

Summer Lunches

starting June 10th through August 2nd. All food must be consumed on site. While lunches are served, stay and enjoy fun activities and programs.

Creative Nonsense

Every Monday, 6-8PM. Teen Open Studio. Be a part of ongoing effort to produce a library “zine”, or work on your own stuff. With art supplies purchased through a grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, we draw, write, paint, print, or other . . . creative nonsense.

Movie and a Pizza Night

Last Thursday of every month (7/25, 8/29), 6-8PM. As the title suggests – come eat some pizza and watch a movie. Come early, and help us decide which film to screen. Don’t forget to check out a book on your way out!

Airbrushing Basics

Cover Letters and Coffee

Tuesday, July 2nd, 4PM. Review or learn anew the basic components of a simple yet effective cover letter. Bring along a copy of your resume and we’ll review that too. Intended for a teen audience, but adults welcome as well, as long as we have the room.

Linocut Workshop: Part One

Wednesday, July 17th, 4PM. Learn the basics of relief printmaking in this two part workshop. Part one - participants will come up with their design, transfer it onto their linoleum block, and begin to carve it out...

Linocut Workshop: Part Two

Thursday, July 18th, 4PM. Part two of the workshop - participants will learn how to ink their blocks, and print their image, using a hand-press technique.

Tuesday, July 23rd, 3PM. A demo will be performed, introducing participants into the basic operations of the airbrush: Setup, basic painting technique, and cleanup. Afterwords, participants are free to experiment.

Mat Cutting Workshop

Thursday, August 1st, 4PM. Everyone has some photographs that they want to frame, or some artwork they would like to hang. Come in to the Makerspace and learn how to do your own matting. Participants must be 13+.

Tiny Gardens

Wednesday, August 14th, 4PM. Make a tiny planter, complete with a succulent plant, that you can hang on your refrigerator. It’s a magnet! Space is limited, priority given to teen participants (aged 13+).

Fridays, May 3rd through July 26th, 3PM. In the meeting room. Movies rated G or PG. Adults must be accompanied by a child. Please check the library website calendar of events for movie listings.

Board Game Madness

Mondays through Thursdays, July 1st through July 25th, 2-5PM. Kids can play board games, puzzles, coloring crafts, Legos, and more.

Mondays, July 1st through July 29th, 6PM. Join the Children’s Department Duolingo classroom to learn and compete with other children. Small prizes will be awarded monthly to top students. Bring headphones and Duolingo compatible devices, computers and tablets are available on a first come first served basis. Ages 7-14, and sign-up is required.

Preschool Storytime

Tissue Paper Lanterns

Wednesdays, June 5th to July 31st, 10-10:30AM. In the meeting room. Join us for lively stories, a simple craft, and a book related short film.

All Ages

Tuesday July 22nd, 3-4PM. In the Children’s Department. Kids can make lanterns for camping and back yard fun with colored tissue paper, tea-light candles, and glass mason jars. Ages 6-12 years old (parent assistants required) Signup required, and space is limited.

Kids Craft

Wednesday, May 1st to July 31st, 6-7PM. An assortment of crafts and supplies will be available. No signup required.

Glow in the dark Mini Hanging Baubles

Monday July 8th, 3PM. In the Children’s Department. Kids can make baubles that glow and feel up toys or stars. Hang them on trees or in your room and watch them glow. No signup required.
