Welcome to the 2014 United Methodist Women’s Reading Program! For the past couple of years we have been exploring some issues from different points of view: climate change, human trafficking, different faith traditions and race relations, and I hope you have had enlightening discussions and actions around these issues. This year, we are going to go a little deeper in our discoveries by inserting ourselves into the story of climate change and looking at ways to change the cycle of abusive relationships so we understand that everyone needs to live whole, spiritual lives. We will find some good news about aid for those in need and read about small ways to help. We will do some traveling to Shangri-La, one of the happiest places on earth, and to different parts of Africa. We’ll climb mountains in New Hampshire and get to know better some cultures we are familiar with. I hope that you have joined the Reading Program group in our online community. The Purpose
The purpose of the Reading Program is to encourage United Methodist Women members to: • Expand understanding of and participation in God’s mission. • Increase sensitivity to all human beings—their needs, interests and concerns. • Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today. • Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life. • Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge. • Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission.
About the books
The United Methodist Women Reading Program Committee chooses the books. Suggestions come from many sources. Three evaluators (local members of United Methodist Women) read each book before the committee reviews it. The reading list includes large print and larger than average print books for persons who prefer or need large print. To make it easy for you to find them, they are in separate categories.
United Methodist Women recommends a diverse range of books with the intention of broadening exposure to a variety of concepts. The Reading Program does not intend that readers accept each word or idea contained within each volume. Some books you may agree with. Some you may not. Either is all right.

Some older books may not be available at United Methodist Women Mission Resources. Other sources include the public library, online services and Reading Program books already purchased by your unit.

How to participate
Any person who wants to participate in the Reading Program should follow one of the plans. When the required number of books and magazines have been read, readers are to report their reading to their secretaries of program resources. Secretaries of program resources or their equivalent work with the United Methodist Women executive committee to promote the program. They should: • Explain Reading Program procedures and enroll individuals in the program. • Use Suggestions for Action as a guide for choosing titles and mission responses. • Secure books and circulate them among unit and circle members. • Distribute copies of this catalog. • Direct members to the Reading Program Online Community at umwonline.org/groups/ readingprogram. • Order copies of the Reading Program brochure (free for postage and handling) so members can report their reading (also available to download at umwmissionresources.org).
The Bible undergirds all Christian reading including that of the Reading Program. response, essential reading for understanding the mission of United Methodist Women, is part of all four reading plans.
Promotional ideas for local and district GROUPS
• Present book reviews at United Methodist Women group meetings and on the online community. • Take Reading Program books and response to retirement and nursing homes. Read regularly to residents. • Inform parents, grandparents and Sunday school teachers that books for children and youth are available through the Reading Program. • Highlight large print books and book listings available for the visually impaired. • Honor those who participate in the Reading Program. Order Reading Program certificates from United Methodist Women Mission Resources to present to those who complete reading plans. • Display progress charts in a prominent place, showing readers’ names, books being read and the reading plans being followed. • Show special recognition to groups and/or individuals who complete Plans III and IV. • Capture interest by attractively mounting quotations from Reading Program books and posting them throughout the church. Include title, author name and publisher, and year title was featured on list. • Develop displays—permanent and portable—to encourage book sales, especially around holiday seasons and vacation times.
The reading program leads to action!
For 140 years, members of United Methodist Women and predecessor organizations have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. Here are a few suggestions to assist you.
• Join the Reading Program Online Community. • Form an action team to address issues discussed in one or more books. • Start a reading group of adults and/ or children or youth. Meet regularly to share and discuss the books members are reading.

1. Pray. Books often raise concerns about people, countries and issues. Bring these concerns to God during your prayer time at home and at group meetings.
• Read Dear White America for deeper understanding of the history and present realities of institutional racism in America and continue your actions on the Charter for Racial Justice Policies of The United Methodist Church. • Encourage youth to read and review titles from the reading lists.
2. Host a program. For example, a locally sponsored program on the environment could help the church and community explore ways to be better stewards of God’s earth. Read and discuss Finding Higher Ground.
3. Organize. You and your group can contact the Office of Community Action to work on social action plans for your local group and church. To obtain resources for community organizing e-mail Carol Barton at cbarton@ unitedmethodistwomen.org.
Read and discuss 100 Simple Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer’s and Age-related Memory Loss and learn how you can stay mentally fit throughout your life, or read Year of Plenty and discuss creating a more sustainable environment in your life.
