Teaching Kids Spanish Vocabulary Lesson for Spanish Teachers Learning new vocabulary words in Spanish is an important element in the language acquisition process. Vocabulary should be constantly taught and reviewed during a lesson as a phonological awareness activity, or to pre-teach new vocabulary of a story or text. Teaching vocabulary is also important because it increases the chances to become a better reader in any language and to improve comprehension skills. Kids love to learn new words in Spanish, but it might be challenging at times to engage kids in these activities so here I’ll give you an idea on how to make a quick vocabulary lesson that children will love. First, select the words you want to teach: (according to the age and unit). Here are a couple guidelines to help decide which words to choose: a. select unknown words b. select the main-critical words to understand a text/selection children will read c. You might already be teaching multi-syllabic words with prefixes, suffixes (ex. -ada; payasada, cucharada, millonada) Greek and Latin roots (ex. acróbata, arquitecto, agrónomo), cognates or words with several meanings (ex. banco, tierra) [2]
