I’m happy to present the reading list for 2017. Many thanks to the Reading Program Committee and all our evaluators for their hard work and commitment. This year, we continue to explore global Christianity, intellectual and spiritual leadership, self-healing and community healing, and some of the tougher issues we face—guns and violence, class and economic injustice, the environment, race relations, and knowing and understanding yourself to understand what you seek from God. You will notice some titles are electronic books only. This merely means that United Methodist Women will not have these titles in its inventory. These books are available elsewhere in both print and electronic formats—you can choose what format works best for you. You can purchase titles not available from United Methodist Women in print or Kindle from our Amazon store at www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/astore. Electronic books can be read on any device (a computer, smart phone or tablet) and the text can be enlarged to make any Reading Program book readable. I hope you enjoy this list and that you continue to read, pray and act. Brenda Thompson Reading Program Specialist

Through colorful firsthand accounts, the author explores how fresh expressions of faith from American youth, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Native Americans who are experiencing and following Jesus outside the boundaries of traditional Western Christianity can revitalize our own faith journeys.
From Texas to Tampa, Florida; Wichita, Kansas to California; there is controversy around teaching religion in public schools. This fascinating investigation into the debate and how to best teach children religious literacy and tolerance reveals a public education system struggling to find the right path forward while offering a promising roadmap for raising a generation of religiously literate Americans.

This book bears witness to the transformation of black faith and culture from enslavement and emancipation, through segregation, civil rights, Black Power, and to the age of Barack Obama. Liberating Black Church History is an indispensable tool for understanding the African American religious experience in a historical and cultural context.
As a boy in Egypt, Brother Nathan witnessed an unthinkable attack on his father, a Christian pastor in a Muslim-majority country. Love Casts Out Fear tells a gripping, true story of danger, overwhelming anger and forgiveness that is beyond comprehension. Through Nathan’s experiences in his beloved homeland, you’ll see firsthand the joys and difficulties Christians face in the persecuted Middle Eastern church. You will marvel at God’s ability to change hearts and care for those who follow the call.

As the key witness to take the stand in the trial famously dubbed the “Mississippi Burning” case, Dr. Johnson, a young preacher fresh out of Bible college, became a voice for justice and equality in the segregated South. Overcoming fear and adversity and offering clarity to the event that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Johnson’s story of love, conviction, adversity and redemption is a riveting account of a life pursuing the call of God and the fight for justice and equality.
Journey down a river teeming with piranhas, caimans, machete-wielding mothers, heroic pastors, faith-filled children and miracles too seldom experienced in many parts of the world on this beautiful adventure through the jungles of Brazil. Kelly Minter rediscovers Jesus among a forgotten people living well beyond the corners of her previously defined faith—a people who draw her back, their pain and their hope, again and again. 6

Congregations say they want to reach new and younger people, many of whom are simply turned off by church. To really connect, congregations have to start doing new things that are out of their comfort zones. F. Douglas Powe Jr. and Jasmine Rose Smothers give ten ways to help, providing tools to reframe the good news in non-traditional ways and move from merely stating your intentions to taking action. This book includes study questions for leadership teams.
In Broken & Blessed, the author explores Genesis, a book deeply concerned with the origins of things—of the universe, of relationships and of families. LaGrone describes how change begins when one person decides to believe God’s promises and how that decision profoundly changes a whole family.

The Rev. Atwood, an avid hunter, contends that one cannot understand the 30,000 American gun deaths per year apart from our national myth and he cautions that an absolute trust in guns and violence morphs easily into idolatry. Having spent 36 years fighting against easy access to firearms, he uses his experience and theological understanding to document how Americans have been deceived into believing that the tools of violence, whether in war or in the bedside stand, will provide security.
Expanding on the call to action in Michelle Alexander’s acclaimed best-seller, The New Jim Crow, this accessible organizing guide puts tools in your hands to help you and your group understand how to make meaningful, effective change. Learn about your role in building movements and how to pick and build campaigns that contribute towards a bigger mass movement against the largest penal system in the world. This important new resource inspires, challenges, motivates and offers time-tested organizing techniques. 11

Pre-Post-Racial America uses the powerful tool of storytelling to speak prophetic truth in a most disarming way. Rani Jha shares stories that help us look at issues of race in America through other lenses—stories of real people today and stories of scripture. These stories can help us reexamine our own narratives, taking power away from those who seek to divide us and giving that power back to God.
We are living in a period of extraordinary economic insecurity and inequality—an inequality that crushes the poor, drains the working class, eliminates the middle class, simultaneously glorifies and dehumanizes the rich, and guts democracy. The stories in this anthology span the class spectrum, providing insight into issues of social class and how we are all affected.

On the Sunday morning after the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s killer, black preachers across America addressed the questions his death raised for their communities: “Where is the justice of God? What are we to hope for?” The Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas examines the myths and narratives underlying a “stand-your-ground” culture, taking seriously the social and theological questions raised by this and similar events in Ferguson, Missouri and Staten Island, New York.
Is fracking the miracle cure-all for our energy ills, or a costly distraction from the necessary work of reducing our fossil fuel dependence? Snake Oil casts a critical eye on the oil industry hype that has hijacked America’s energy conversation. This book looks at fracking from both economic and environmental perspectives, informed by the most thorough analysis of shale gas and oil drilling data ever undertaken.

Employers steal billions of dollars when they pay less than minimum wage, refuse overtime pay, force workers to work off the clock, hold back final paychecks, misclassify employees as independent contractors, steal tips, and fail to pay workers at all. Wage theft cheats workers, steals from the public when companies fail to pay employment taxes, and puts ethical businesses at an unfair disadvantage.

Research by Veterans Admin istration health professionals suggests that moral injury, an ancient but unaddressed wound of war, may be a factor in the alarming rate of suicide among veterans. Soul Repair tells the stories of four war veterans from Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan who reveal their experiences of moral injury and how they have learned to live with it. This book will help veterans and their families, communities and clergy understand the impact of war on the consciences of healthy people, support the recovery of moral conscience in society, and restore veterans to civilian life.
If Eve Only Knew analyzes some of the most potent messages in evangelical popular culture about a woman’s role in marriage, child-bearing, homemaking and vocation, arguing that God—and God’s revelation through scripture, tradition and experience—creates all of us to celebrate our abilities rather than confine ourselves to ill-defined gender roles.

Children will learn about our Methodist heritage and how it has shaped us as people of faith, how God inspired John Wesley and other early leaders of our church, and how God still calls us to tell the world about Jesus today.
The Courage to Be Yourself introduces us to 26 real teens as they write about their lives and how hard it is to be themselves, especially when they’re bullied, picked on, pressured, excluded and disrespected. The stories don’t have easy answers and they don’t all have happy endings. There are no magic solutions to the problems these teens face, but the message is clear—although they can’t control how others see them, they can control how they see themselves. 19

When an elephant in the city zoo picks up a beauty magazine, she makes a horrifying discovery: her wrinkles make her look ancient! After covering herself with anti-aging cream, she passes the magazine on to the other animals in the zoo. Soon the panda is trying to get rid of the dark circles under his eyes, the lion is getting the latest celebrity hairstyle, and the boa constrictor is dressing in leopard print (snakeskin was so last season). But how will people react to the animals’ new looks? This zany, satirical picture book addresses body image issues and reminds readers to appreciate themselves for who they are.
As a child taking his first communion, 7-year-old Angelo Roncalli declared, “I want always to be good to everyone.” Years later, he would become the beloved Pope John XXIII. This celebration of love and humility is a wonderful reminder of the importance of living each day fully.

United Methodist Women recommends a diverse range of books with the intention of broadening exposure to a variety of concepts. The Reading Program does not intend that readers accept each word or idea contained within each book.
Promoting the Reading Program
• Present book reviews at United Methodist Women group meetings.
Program resource managers or their equivalent will work with the local United Methodist Women leadership team to promote the program. The following are some suggestions:
• Take Reading Program books and response to retirement and nursing homes. Read regularly to residents. • Inform parents, grandparents and Sunday school teachers that books for children and youth are available through the Reading Program.
• Explain Reading Program procedures to interested individuals and enroll them in the program. • Use the action suggestions listed in this catalog as a guide for choosing titles and mission responses.
• Highlight large print books and book listings available for the visually impaired.
• Secure books and circulate them among unit and circle members.
• Honor those who participate in the Reading Program. Download Reading Program certificates from hhttp://www.unitedmethodistwomen. org/readingprogram/certificate to present to those who complete reading plans.
• Distribute copies of this catalog. • Distribute copies of the Reading Program Report Form so participants can keep track of and report their reading. The Report Form is available for shipping and handling or as a free download at umwmissionresources.org/sp/ downloads.

Local and District Groups
• Develop displays, both permanent and portable, to encourage book sales, especially around holiday seasons and vacation times.
• Form an action team to address issues discussed in one or more books. • Start a reading group for adults, children or youth. Meet regularly to share and discuss the books members are reading.
