Religion, very much like politics, can be an easy forum for extreme views. Today, particularly here in the United States since the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001, it has been common to characterize any adherent of Islam, the Muslim religion, as a potential terrorist. This is of course prejudicial against Muslim people many of whom deeply oppose violence. By the same token, there are in this country and in Israel very liberal Jews and extremely conservative Jews. We have open-minded and progressive Protestant Christians, as well as very intolerant fundamentalist Christians. And certainly members of our own Roman Catholic faith have often been deeply divided on a number of social, political and even theological questions. The worst of it is that it is typical for one side to consider the other as heretical and wrong-headed, and I believe it is true to say that most often there is more conflict within a particular denomination than there is between one religion and another. All of this gives religion in general a bad name. In this Sunday’s Gospel Jesus and his disciples are sharply criticized for not adhering very strictly to the Jewish laws of purification. These purification rituals had developed over the centuries and stemmed from some statements in Leviticus which encouraged hygiene and dietary restrictions for the sake of health. By Jesus’ time, these regulations were quite extreme in their scope and extended, as it says in the Gospel, to “cups and jugs and kettles and beds.” Jesus and his disciples were all practicing and faithful Jews as were the Pharisees and Scribes who became their adversaries. In criticizing Jesus’ laxity, they were in effect saying that he was a heretic and a bad Jew. Jesus counters by quoting from the Prophet Isaiah: “This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, . . teaching as doctrines [what are really only] human precepts.” He goes on to say that what really defiles us is what comes from within: evil thoughts, greed, malice, deceit, etc. As I said, extreme attitudes are very much with us today. Some Catholics claim the main concern of the Church should be the anti-abortion message, or that we need to rein in dissidents. Others only want to hear the message of toleration: they feel the Church’s emphasis should be on such issues of social justice, for example concern for the poor and affordable housing. It can be difficult to keep a balance between rigidity and orthodoxy and, on the other hand, a ‘too-lax’ attitude. I believe our Lord Jesus would counsel us against either extreme. Following Christ means both self-discipline and also a love toward others that is full of mercy and forgiveness. Fr. Ulysses

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) Sessions Beginning Sunday, September 9, 2018, following the 8:00 AM Mass. Gathering held in the Chapel of Mount Carmel Church. Rooted from the very beginning of Church tradition, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the path for welcoming new inquirers into our community of believers. If you, or someone close to you, are considering becoming a member of the Catholic community here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel then please accept our invitation to join with us weekly on Sunday. In a small group discussion format, we use this opportunity to discuss the biblical readings of the week, “unpacking” the layers of meaning, look into church tradition, and review church teachings. Most importantly, we share the relevancy of this in our lives today. We will discuss questions regarding the Rite itself, look at what the Rite offers all of us during this wonderful spiritual journey, and how the Church uses the Rite for those seeking any or all of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist. We encourage those already members of the community to consider being sponsors, walking with and supporting the inquirers where by sharing your faith you will receive the gift that comes by helping others grow in theirs.
