Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

This Wednesday, August the 15th, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Assumption into heaven. The feast of the Assumption goes back to the very early days of the Church. While devotion to the Mother of Jesus was strong from the beginning of the Christian era, there were always controversies regarding Mary’s status. Some Christians asked, “Was Mary just the mother of human Jesus, due only the respect of other holy people?” While others claimed that we should most certainly honor Mary as the Mother of God since, after all, she gave birth to the Messiah. The Council of Ephesus (431) at last declared that since Jesus was a unique person, at once human and divine, then Mary must at the same time be the earthly mother of the historical Jesus as well as the Mother of God. As the centuries progressed, devotion to Mary grew more fervent along with the firm belief that the Blessed Mother continues to co-operate even now in a special way in our salvation. Mary is our intercessor, and her concern for the human family is a mother’s concern for her children. Throughout the ages she has appeared, often to children as in the case of Lourdes and Fatima, bringing her message of hope and encouraging us to pray. Mary herself was hardly more than a girl when the Angel Gabriel came to her with the news that she would be mother of the Savior. Her response was, “Let it be done to me according to your word.” Mary said “yes” to God, and she continued saying “yes” for the rest of her life. Although the facts are few, we do know from Scripture

Padre Ulises

that Mary’s life, linked so intimately with that of her Son, was marked with difficulty and sorrow: the uncertain birth in a stable, the dangerous flight to Egypt, the pain of seeing Jesus rejected, the unspeakable agony as she witnessed the Crucifixion. The Blessed Virgin suffered these events, not

as an angel or a goddess, but as a woman and a mother. We have long honored Mary as the quintessential symbol of the pilgrim Church on earth and as the perfect disciple of Jesus Christ. Although there have been many centuries of strong Marian devotion, it’s rather interesting that the doctrine of the Assumption of Mary is actually the last official dogma declared by the Catholic Church. It was promulgated by Pope Pius XII in November of 1950 in the wake of World War II with all its terrible destruction. In declaring Mary’s Assumption, body and soul, into heaven, the Holy Father wanted to express that we are all equally precious in the eyes of God, and that every human being, high or low, is worthy of the same dignity and respect that we offer the Blessed Mother. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) Sessions Beginning Sunday, September 9, 2018, following the 8:00 AM Mass. Gathering held in the Chapel of Mount Carmel Church. Rooted from the very beginning of Church tradition, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the path for welcoming new inquirers into our community of believers. If you, or someone close to you, are considering becoming a member of the Catholic community here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel then please accept our invitation to join with us weekly on Sunday. In a small group discussion format, we use this opportunity to discuss the biblical readings of the week, “unpacking” the layers of meaning, look into church tradition, and review church teachings. Most importantly, we share the relevancy of this in our lives today. We will discuss questions regarding the Rite itself, look at what the Rite offers all of us during this wonderful spiritual journey, and how the Church uses the Rite for those seeking any or all of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist. We encourage those already members of the community to consider being sponsors, walking with and supporting the inquirers where by sharing your faith you will receive the gift that comes by helping others grow in theirs. Please welcome them warmly into our church. For further information, contact: John Spotorno, RCIA coordinator, Cell phone (650) 303-6292 Home phone (650) 364-3704 or E-mail: [email protected] .
