Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

It is a fact that during times of great tribulation – periods of global epidemics, or of serious economic collapse, or of widespread wars and civil conflict – people tend to think a great deal more about the possibility that the world might end. This is not just a recent phenomenon. We know that during the Black Plague of the 1300’s when entire towns in Europe were depopulated by disease, that there was a prevalent belief that the world was coming to an end. And I’m sure the same has been true at other times. So what is the Catholic Church’s position on what is called ‘The Last Things’ or ‘The End Times’? From the beginning, this question has occupied Christian thinkers. After all, in the very early days of the Church, it was widely believed that the Second Coming of Christ was just around the corner. St. Paul himself taught this to his first converts. At one point, he tells the people that they would be better off to remain childless, for why bring children into a world that will soon disappear? But as time went on and Christ did not return in a visible way, a different sort of reflection on the Last Days became normative for Catholic Christians. This reflection, developed by theologians and by the great Catholic mystics through the ages, suggests that it is more important for us to dwell on the brevity of our individual lives here on earth, and to live as if each day might be our last. Any thoughts that we might have about the Final Days, whether the end of the world, or simply the end of our own time here, should move us to improve ourselves morally, and to do whatever we can to improve the world around us. Instead of fretting about what we cannot control, we would do better to ask ourselves, “How can I bring peace and understanding into my sphere of influence, my family, my workplace, and my friendships? What things can I do to alleviate suffering or poverty in my neighborhood? In this way, God can work through us and use us for his purposes. We are, after all, the Body of Christ – Christ’s hands, his feet, and his voice within our own communities. And God’s plan is that the whole world should be renewed in Christ so that peace can reign on earth. But again, is the world going to end? Yes, it is, but (as Jesus said), “of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” The ultimate reality is that this world is always dying, and always being born again. As it says in Ecclesiastes, “One generation comes, and another passes away, but the earth abides forever until the end of time.” So let us cherish the earth and cherish one another; let us be examples of goodness and right living, and most of all, let us be channels of the compassion, peace and light of Christ both here and hereafter. Fr. Ulysses.

Padre Ulises
