Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Tomorrow, Monday April 25th, is the feast of St. Mark, the Evangelist. He is the author of what we call the Second Gospel, the Gospel of Mark. Like the Apostle St. Paul, Mark is considered to be an Apostle though, like St. Paul, he never met or knew Jesus in the flesh. The Scriptures tell us that St. Mark was the cousin of Barnabas, a very close disciple of Jesus and one of the founding members of the Church of Jerusalem. Barnabas then introduced his cousin Mark to the Apostle St. Peter. Mark was so impressed by Peter’s spirituality and wisdom that he became one of Peter’s closest associates, traveling with him and helping him to build up the Church in those first years after Jesus’ death. Scholars believe that St. Mark’s Gospel, the shortest of all the Gospels, is actually a record of what St. Peter told Mark. This is the earliest written account we have of the life of Jesus, including his parables, his miracles and all the other events of Jesus’ public ministry. The Scriptures also tell us that Mark’s mother was an early convert to Christianity. Apparently she was a woman of some means – not poor – and after her conversion she opened her own house as a meeting place for the new community of Christians in Jerusalem. These early gatherings became the model of how our Church began – a few faithful coming together in someone’s home to pray and to share the Eucharistic meal. St. Mark was also privileged to know St. Paul, and he accompanied Paul on a number of his journeys. It’s wonderful to imagine these two men, so fired up with the Holy Spirit, so inspired, that they would travel far from the Holy Land in order to bring the great message of salvation in Christ to as many people as they could. By all accounts, despite the many difficulties they encountered and the persecution they endured, St. Mark and St. Paul were successful in their missionary efforts. Within ten years after Jesus’ death there were small but very active Christian communities in Alexandria, Antioch, Ephesus, Philippi, Athens, indeed in all of the major cities of the Roman Empire from Jerusalem to Rome. And all of this was simply in response to Jesus’ command to: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” Fr. Ulysses

Jubilee Year of Mercy April 24, 2016 Jubilee Day for Youth This Sunday’s “Youth Jubilee” previews July’s World Youth Day in Krakow. Its theme from Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful,” echoes Pope Francis’ warning that “the practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture.” In countercultural witness, therefore, “the time has come,” says Francis, “for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters.” Jesus affirms the same in today’s Gospel. “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34). Francis concludes, “The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.” Jesus too asserts, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). Archdiocesan Annual Appeal 2016 On the last Sunday of February we kicked off our campaign to collect what we require for the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal. Each parish in the Archdiocese of San Francisco is assessed a certain dollar quantity (about 20%) of its regular income, and is then expected to contribute this amount by the end of the year to the Archdiocese. The money collected is in the nature of a tax allowing the Archdiocese to operate its many ministries and services. These include material support to retired priests and nuns, financial aid to our local Catholic Schools, the funding of the seminary and vocations to the priesthood, Marriage and Family life programs, and many charities. Our parish assessment this year is $74,614. A grateful thanks to all those who have already pledged their support. For those who have not, would you take one of the brochures and consider what you might do to help us make our goal?
