Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

On Friday of this week we’ll celebrate the memorial of one of the Church’s more well-known saints, Vincent de Paul. As you are likely aware, we host here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel a very active Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We have a food pantry located on the parish grounds, and the Society has regular meetings in our Parish Center. In the front office, we daily receive calls from people requesting help with food, diapers and other needs. On the fifth Sundays of the month, we take up a second collection that is given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society to help with their apostolate of serving the poor. Participation in the Society can help us to live our faith in a more active way, putting into practice Jesus’ command to serve the needy. The group meets at 7:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month for no more than an hour, so the time commitment is not great. The good works of the Society flow from the spiritual life of its members. This active spirituality is the legacy of the Society’s patron saint, Vincent de Paul (1581-1660). Vincent was born to a peasant family and he early in life discerned his priestly vocation. After ordination, he became a court chaplain to a wealthy family and he also served in a parish on the outskirts of Paris. During this time he came to know another future saint, Francis de Sales, whose famous book, Introduction to the Devout Life, had a profound influence on him. He soon felt compelled to do something to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and the sick whom he saw when he left the confines of the court. Vincent formed a group made up of women who named themselves Servants of the Poor. This initial group continued to grow and to branch out, developing into a now familiar religious order, the Daughters of Charity, who still minister to the needy today. Vincent hoped to form a parallel group for men, but this did not come about during his lifetime. It was a young French scholar, Antoine Frédéric Ozanam, who in 1833 established the first Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Ozanam was eager to promote Catholic life and identity among his fellow intellectuals who were becoming alienated from the Church. He was also deeply moved by the plight of the thousands of people who were living in poverty in Paris during the early stages of the Industrial Revolution. This newly-formed St. Vincent de Paul Society was a means by which dedicated laypeople could gather to pray and then mobilize to help the poor. Today, the Society has spread to more than one hundred countries. Here in the United States, it is widely known for the thrift stores it operates as well as for the numerous charitable activities it promotes. Individual parish conferences such as ours serve the needy by home visits, through prayer, and by various acts of mercy, all in the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and of our Lord Jesus Christ himself. Fr. Ulysses

Archdiocesan Annual Appeal 2019 Our assessment for this year is $78,542.98. This Archdiocesan tax supports all those many offices, ministries and charities that individual parishes alone cannot cover. These include the Marriage Tribunal, support of retired priests and nuns, and financial help to our Catholic Schools. To date we have received about $ 61,746. Please consider what you might do to help us meet our obligation by the end of the year. Thank you !

HOMEBOUND MINISTRY If someone in your family is homebound, lives nearby and is unable to attend Mass, but would like to receive the Eucharist, please contact Julie O’Leary at (650) 361-8681. Communion ministers are needed to bring the Eucharist to homebound parishioners. Please call Julie O’Leary if you would like to participate in this in this worthy ministry.

TODAY’S 2ND COLLECTION: PRIESTS RETIREMENT FUND.

Our priests have been there for the most special moments of our lives: Baptisms, marriages, illness and death, always in our times of need. They preach the Gospel to us, help us follow the example of Christ, and they offer us reconciliation and counsel. When priests retire, because they earned very little in salary during their years of ministry, their monthly benefits are smaller than that of retired lay people. With gratitude for their priests’ service, faithful Catholics of the Archdiocese of San Francisco have gladly helped to fill in the gap by donating to the Priests Retirement Fund. Thank you for your generosity to this collection.
