Today’s Gospel is a particularly appropriate one for us to hear. We’re privileged to live in a country of abundant resources and possibilities for personal accomplishment. Like the servants in the Gospel, we have all been given a share in what the United States has to offer. For those willing to work hard, for those with the energy and talent to take advantage of the available opportunities, a great deal can be achieved here. In the parable that Jesus tells his disciples, the Master who is leaving on a journey stands for God the Father. The Master calls his servants and then entrusts to each one a certain number of talents. In the time of Jesus, a ‘talent’ was the largest unit of currency in circulation, and our word ‘talent’, referring to the special abilities or gifts that we have, derives from this parable. We were all of us created equal in the eyes of God, but no one would deny that our talents differ enormously. Some have artistic ability, others an aptitude for mechanics, or teaching, or nursing. But the Gospel story suggests that God, who gave us these talents, expects us to develop them and use them properly, and not just for our own benefit, but for that of others. When the Master returns from his journey and summons his servants, they must each give an account of what they have done. To the one who accomplished a great deal with what he was given, the Master says, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” In other words, at the end of our life, our sojourn here on earth, we will come before the judgment seat of God and our souls will make an account of how we lived the life God gave us. St. Paul remarks in today’s second reading that we never know when our last hour will come, and that the worse thing would to find ourselves unprepared, to have to say regretfully to ourselves and to our Maker, “I neglected what really mattered,” or “I wasted my time and I squandered my gifts and talents; I didn’t fulfill my potential.” God created us for happiness, not in the superficial and temporary sense of pleasure and enjoyment, but in the deeper sense of knowing one has done one’s best. The secret of the Kingdom of Heaven that Jesus tries to convey through the Gospels is this: we don’t have to choose between a good life and success in the world or having a deep and satisfying spiritual life. They are not opposite paths. If we put God first, allowing God to use us and our talents for his purposes; if we make love of our neighbor, kindness, generosity, and the teachings of Jesus the core principles of our lives, then most assuredly God will light up the path in front of us, and we’ll know the right step each minute of the day. Then when the Lord comes out to meet us, we’ll be ready, and God will say, “You used your talents well; now come and share my joy.”
