GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNION For Catholics
As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all.
For our fellow Christians
We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ's prayer for us "that they may all be one" (Jn 17:21). Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 §4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 §3).
For those not receiving Holy Communion
All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another.
For non-Christians
We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.
NORMAS PARA LA RECEPCIÓN DE LA COMUNIÓN Para los católicos
Los católicos participamos plenamente en la celebración de la Eucaristía cuando recibimos la Sagrada Comunión. Se nos anima a recibirla frecuentemente y con devoción. Para estar debidamente preparados a recibir la Eucaristía, los fieles no deben haber cometido pecado grave y deben haber ayunado por una hora antes de comulgar. Quien haya cometido pecado grave desde su última confesión no debe recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor sin antes haberse confesado con un sacerdote, excepto en situaciones extremas cuando no hay oportunidad de confesarse. En tal caso, los fieles deben estar conscientes de la obligación de hacer un acto de Contrición perfecta con la intención de confesarse lo más pronto posible (Derecho Canónico, canon 916). Se anima a los fieles a recibir el Sacramento de la Penitencia con frecuencia.

Damos la bienvenida a todos los cristianos, como a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, a esta celebración de la Eucaristía. Rogamos para que nuestro bautismo común y el Espíritu Santo nos unan unos a otros en esta Eucaristía y que comiencen a disiparse las lamentables divisiones que nos separan. Siguiendo la oración del Señor "que todos sean uno" (Jn 17:21), rogamos para que estas divisiones sean aminoradas y finalmente desaparezcan. Los católicos creemos que la celebración Eucarística es una señal de unidad en la fe, la vida y el culto. A los miembros de las Iglesias con las cuales no estamos plenamente unidos, por lo general no se les invita a comulgar. Para compartir la Eucaristía en situaciones excepcionales, con cristianos no católicos, se necesita obtener el permiso del obispo diocesano según las provisiones del canon 844 &4 del Derecho Canónico. The candidate makes five promises: to assist bishops in caring for the Lord's flock; to preach and teach "worthily and wisely;" to celebrate faithfully the sacraments; to "pray without ceasing" for God's mercy upon the people entrusted to his care; and to resolve to "be united more closely every day to Christ the High Priest." Finally, he kneels before the Bishop and promises to respect and obey him and his successors.
As an expression of humility, the candidate prostrates himself for the Litany of the Saints.

Laying On of Hands and Prayer of Ordination
The candidate kneels before the Bishop, who places his hands upon him in silence. Next, all vested Priests who are present lay their hands upon the candidate in silence. The faithful pray silently while this is taking place. (At the end of the prayer, all respond: Amen)
Investiture with Stole and Chasuble The stole of a Priest is worn around the neck. Like a Deacon’s stole, it is a sign of Holy Orders and service. The chasuble is an outer garment that is worn by Bishops and Priests only when the Eucharist is being celebrated. You will notice that the candidate for Holy Orders entered the liturgy wearing an alb – the garment of baptism. Anointing of Hands with Sacred Chrism The palms of the newly ordained are anointed to symbolize the Priest's distinctive participation in Christ's Priesthood as one who offers sacrifice to God and sanctifies the Christian people. The Sacred Chrism used for this anointing is a blend of olive oil and fragrant spices consecrated by the Bishop during Holy Week. Handing Over of Bread and Wine The placing of bread and wine into the hands of the new Priest points to his duty of presiding at the celebration of the Eucharist and of following Christ crucified.

The Bishop stands and extends a greeting of peace to the newly ordained. This seals, so to speak, the admittance into his ministry as the Bishop’s new co-worker. The concelebrating Priests also share an expression of peace with the newly ordained as a sign of their being joined in the Order of Priests.

Reverend Michael M. Steffes Jr., 29, is the son of Mike (Rhonda) Steffes and Mary Kay (Tom) Schmitz of St. Patrick Parish, Portland. His siblings are: Jacob, Joseph, and Naomi, and stepsiblings are: Natalie, Tim, Josh, Georgia, and Samantha. Father Michael attended the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 2014. He received his Master of Divinity in spring 2018 from the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, Mundelein, Illinois. He completed his pastoral internship at Our Lady of Consolation Parish, Rockford, Michigan, under the guidance of Reverend Anthony Russo in 2016. He was ordained a transitional Deacon on May 9, 2017. This past year he served as a deacon on the weekends at St. Joseph Parish, Libertyville, Illinois, under the guidance of Reverend John Trout. Father Michael will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 140 Church St., Portland, MI.
