ITURGY OF THE WORD JEREMIAH 1:4-9

Proclaimed in Spanish

The word of the LORD came to me thus: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. "Ah, Lord GOD!" I said, "I know not how to speak; I am too young." But the LORD answered me, "Say not, 'I am too young.' To

whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak. Have no fear before them, because I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD." Then the LORD extended his hand and touched my mouth, saying, "See, I place my words in your mouth!" Palabra de Dios. Response: Te alabamos, Señor.

PSALM 89

Responsorial Psalm

3. He shall call to me, "My God, my rock of salvation, my salvation."

HEBREWS 5:1-10 Proclaimed in English

había dicho: Tú eres mi Hijo, yo te he engendrado hoy. The Word of the Lord. RESPONSE: Thanks be to God.

JOHN 15:9-17 Proclaimed in English

The Gospel of the Lord. RESPONSE: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

RDINATION

THE DIACONATE The men who will be ordained as deacons are called forward and presented to the bishop. Father Ronald Hutchinson, director of vocations, testifies to their readiness. The bishop announces the election of the candidates: Bishop: Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose these, our brothers, for the Order of the Diaconate. All give their assent by responding "Thanks be to God," followed by applause. THE PRIESTHOOD Those to be ordained as priests are likewise called forth and presented to the bishop. After Father Hutchinson testifies to their readiness, the bishop announces their election: Bishop: Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose these, our brothers, for the Order of the Priesthood.

All give their assent by responding "Thanks be to God," followed by applause.

Homily Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids

DIACONATE The candidates stand and make these promises: to be consecrated as ministers of the church, to serve with humble charity, to proclaim the Christian faith in word and deed, and to pray faithfully the Liturgy of the Hour. Because Thomas, Patrick, Colin and Daniel anticipate ordination to the priesthood, they also commit to embrace celibacy as a sign of their dedication to Christ. Finally, each kneel before the bishop and promise to respect and obey him and his successors.

Promise of the Elect

PRIESTHOOD Douglas and William make five promises: to assist bishops in caring for the Lord's flock, to preach and teach "worthily and wisely," to celebrate faithfully the sacraments, to "pray without ceasing" for God's mercy upon the people entrusted to their care, and to resolve to "be united more closely every day to Christ the High Priest." Finally, each kneel before the bishop and promise to respect and obey him and his successors.

Litany of Supplication

As an expression of humility, the candidates prostrate themselves for the Litany of Saints.

Laying On of Hands and Prayer of Ordination to the Diaconate

The gift of the Holy Spirit for the office of deacon is conferred on the candidates through the laying on of hands by the bishop and the Prayer of Ordination. (At the end of the prayer, all respond: Amen)

Investiture with Stole and Dalmatic

The stole is the single most recognizable symbol of the deacon. It is to be worn whenever he exercises a liturgical or sacramental role. The stole is worn over the left shoulder, and extends diagonally across the front and back of the upper body and over the hip. The dalmatic is a special tunic that is worn primarily at Mass.

Presentation of the Book of the Gospels

The Presentation of the Book of the Gospels signifies the office of the deacon to proclaim the Gospel in liturgical celebrations and to preach the faith of the Church in word and in deed.

8

Prayer of Supplication Laying On of Hands and Prayer of Ordination to the Priesthood

The candidates kneel before the bishop, who places his hands upon the candidates in silence. Next, all the vested priests who are present lay their hands upon the candidates in silence. The faithful are to pray silently while all this is taking place.

Ordination of Priests PLEASE STAND

(At the end of the prayer, all respond: Amen)

Investiture with Stole and Chasuble

PLEASE BE SEATED

The stole of a priest is worn around the neck. Like the deacons' stole, it is a sign of Holy Orders and service. The chasuble is an outer garment that is worn by bishops and priests only when the Eucharist is being celebrated. You will notice that each of the candidates for Holy Orders entered the liturgy wearing an alb – the garment of baptism.

Anointing of Hands with Sacred Chrism

The palms of the newly ordained are anointed to offer sacrifice to God and to sanctify the Christian people. The Sacred Chrism used for this anointing is a blend of olive oil and fragrant spices consecrated by the bishop during Holy Week.

Handing Over of Bread and Wine

In receiving the gifts to be offered at the altar, the newly ordained are reminded that they are to imitate the mystery they celebrate, modeling their lives on the mystery of the Lord's cross.

The bishop stands and extends a greeting of peace to the newly ordained. The priests who are present also share an expression of peace with the newly ordained as a sign of their being joined in the Order of Priests. All the deacons who are present likewise express their fraternity to the newly ordained deacons.
