ITURGY OF THE WORD JEREMIAH 1:4-9

Proclaimed in English

The Word of the Lord. RESPONSE: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 89

Responsorial Psalm

3. He shall call to me, "My God, my rock of salvation, my salvation."

2 CORINTHIANS 4:1-2,5-7 Proclaimed in Spanish

Brothers and sisters: Since we have this ministry through the mercy shown us, we are not discouraged. Rather, we have renounced shameful, hidden things; not acting deceitfully or falsifying the word of God, but by the open declaration of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord,

and ourselves as your slaves for the sake of Jesus. For God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of Jesus Christ. But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. Palabra de Dios. Response: Te alabamos, Señor.

JOHN 15:9-17 Proclaimed in English

The Gospel of the Lord. RESPONSE: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

RDINATION

The men who will be ordained as transitional deacons are called forward and presented to Bishop Walkowiak. Father Ronald Hutchinson, director of priestly vocations, testifies to their readiness. The bishop announces the election of the candidates: Bishop: Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose these, our brothers, for the Order of the Diaconate. All give their assent by responding "Thanks be to God," followed by applause.

Homily Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids

Promise of the Elect

The candidates stand and make these promises: to be consecrated as ministers of the Church, to serve with humble charity, to proclaim the Christian faith in word and deed, and to pray faithfully the Liturgy of the Hours. Because Stephen, Steven and Kyle anticipate ordination to the priesthood, they also commit to embrace celibacy as a sign of their dedication to Christ. Finally, each kneel before the bishop and promise to respect and obey him and his successors.

Litany of Supplication

As an expression of humility, the candidates prostrate themselves for the Litany of the Saints.

Laying On of Hands and Prayer of Ordination

The gift of the Holy Spirit for the office of deacon is conferred on the candidates through the laying on of hands by the bishop and the Prayer of Ordination. (At the end of the prayer, all respond: Amen)

Investiture with Stole and Dalmatic

The stole is the single most recognizable symbol of the deacon. It is to be worn whenever he exercises a liturgical or sacramental role. The stole is worn over the left shoulder, and extends diagonally across the front and back of the upper body and over the hip. The dalmatic is a special tunic that is worn primarily at Mass.

Handing On of the Book of the Gospels

The Presentation of the Book of the Gospels signifies the office of the deacon to proclaim the Gospel in liturgical celebrations and to preach the faith of the Church in word and in deed.

The bishop stands and extends a greeting of peace to the newly ordained. All the deacons who are present express their fraternity to the newly ordained deacons.

Prayer for the Jubilee of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!" You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
