CAPITOL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL General Guidelines for Students VISION STATEMENT:

At Capitol, we want to empower each child to be a literate, prepared, responsible citizen.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The front doors will be unlocked no sooner than 7:15 a.m. The first bell rings at 7:55 a.m. This is when students go down the hall to their classroom. The school day begins at 8:00. Students should be in their seats and ready to begin work at 8:00. This is when the morning announcements are done. Students arriving after 8:00 should check in at the office before going to class. For the safety of your child, all exit doors will remain locked. Everyone entering the building will need to enter through the south door at the front of the building. Students who come before 7:55 are to report to the cafeteria. Bus students are dismissed at 3:20 p.m. Car students begin dismissal at 3:25 p.m. We require all parents to stop by the office if you need your child during school hours. Students must have written, signed excuses for absences. Those students who have been away from school to honor a doctor’s appointment will not be counted absent if they return to school on the day of the appointment and bring with them a written doctor’s excuse or other documentation from the doctor’s office. A written excuse from the parent will not be acceptable to be counted present. Students should not bring money or personal items to school. If these items are brought to school, the student will be responsible for their care and safekeeping. Students may only leave school during school hours if they are signed out in the office by a parent or guardian. This also includes lunchtime. Students who are tardy may be required to miss recess to make up any work missed because of tardiness. Please give instructions for getting home before students come to school. All students must participate in physical education. A written excuse from the parent is necessary for a child to miss physical education. If missing more than three days

consecutively, a written doctor’s excuse is required. Tennis shoes are required for participation. Occasionally, there will be assemblies and programs. Families are invited to attend. School sponsored activities may include a Family Reading Night, Family Learning Night, Christmas party, Valentine party, school pictures, school spirit days, field day, talent show, and book fairs. Parents are encouraged to meet with their child’s teacher. Teachers may request a conference and set up appointments, but parents are welcome at anytime during the designated conference period. Teachers cannot conference with parents during class time when they have students in the room. Please keep this in mind. Instruction time is vital and should not be disrupted.

DISCIPLINE GOALS: Our district stresses character development. Our Capitol Lobo Way Expectations are built around the attributes of responsibility, respectfulness, and safety. All staff members will: Focus on the prevention of discipline problems. Be firm, fair, and consistent. Have high expectations for self and students. No fighting or play-fighting. These students will be subject to loss of privileges, detention or suspension. Parents will be notified. Maintain appropriate noise level. Students have primary responsibility for their own actions. We encourage self-control. Walk in the halls and from class to class in an orderly manner. Students must observe the safety rules of the school for their own security and that of others. Show respect for self, others, property, and those in authority. Be on time, be prepared, and follow directions. Be a good example. Observe the golden rule: Treat other the way you would like to be treated. Students shall follow classroom rules established by the teacher.

GROOMING Clothing should be selected and worn in a manner that is not suggestive or indecent. It shall not contain vulgar or indecent slogans, pictures, or advertise tobacco products, alcohol or drugs, either directly or by suggestion. Clothing items must fit at the waistline and shall not be worn in a manner which would associate or affiliate a student with a gang or gang activity. Students may be required to tuck shirts in at the waist if such attire gives the appearance of violating the student dress code. Dress considered unacceptable would include but not be limited to: a.

Shorts that are too short as determined by school personnel.

Tank tops, “see through”, strapless or sleeveless clothing, tops with “spaghetti straps”, or any top which does not extend to cover below the belt line.

c.

Hats, caps, bandannas or other head wear inside the buildings. Caps and hats may be worn on Fridays. Hat stickers will be sold out of the office on Fridays for 50 cents to students who want to participate.

d.

“Tongue-bars”, studs, or other visible body piercing objects on any student.

e.

Earrings or ear studs on boys.

Other items of dress or clothing not listed but determined by the Campus SiteBased Committee or Administrative staff to be inappropriate, will not be allowed. School personnel in charge of extracurricular activities may impose stricter grooming and dress requirements on students who participate in the activity. 3.

BUS STUDENTS Bus students must follow instructions from the bus driver. Continued disruptive behavior will cause students to lose the privilege of riding the bus. A separate bus behavior guideline will be distributed. Any questions concerning busses or bus routes should be directed to Sandra Riggs, 894-3213.

CAFETERIA Lunches may be purchased in advance by depositing money in your student's account in the cafeteria before school. Cost is $2 per day for lunch. No students will be allowed to charge more than $10 unless arrangements have been made with the cafeteria manager. Students may purchase ice cream in the cafeteria after they have finished their lunch. They must pay cash and may not charge ice cream to their account. There will be no lunch charges after May 1.

ATTENDANCE Perfect Attendance awards will not be given to students who have five or more tardies in a semester.

Grading Policy Teachers in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades will be expected to record a minimum of 2 grades per week in the subjects of English Language Arts & Reading and Math. In the subjects of Science and Social Studies, 1st and 2nd grade teachers will give a letter grade of E (Excellence), S (Satisfactory), or U (Unsatisfactory) each six weeks. 3rd grade teachers are required to give a numerical grade for Science and Social Studies. A minimum of 1 grade per week will be given in 3rd grade for Science and Social Studies. Teachers are encouraged to record half of the required minimum number of grades by the end of the 3rd week of each 6 week grading period. Students who fail an assignment or test that will count towards their 6 week average will be given a reasonable opportunity to redo an assignment or retake a test for a maximum grade of 70.

Se dará un mínimo de 6 grados en 3er grado cada período de calificaciones 6 semanas de Ciencia y Estudios Sociales. Se anima a los profesores a grabar la mitad del número mínimo requerido de calificaciones al final de la tercera semana de cada período de calificaciones de 6 semanas.
