Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

June 20, 2017

Robert Treat Academy believes summer reading is a valuable experience for all students and an important extension of our educational program. In order for your child to be ready for third grade, it is essential that he/she reads over the summer to actively nurture the love of reading and develop literacy skills. During the month of July, you may either read Judy Moody was in a Mood by Megan McDonald or Nate the Great by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. Judy Moody was in a Mood is a terrific book for upcoming third graders to read because it is about Judy who is about to enter third grade, too! Unfortunately, Judy doesn’t have high hopes for third grade, but when Mr. Todd assigns her class a special project, Judy gets a chance to really express herself! Nate the Great is a detective mystery. Nate has a new case! His friend Annie has lost a picture. She wants Nate to help her find it. Nate the Great must get all the facts, ask the right questions, and narrow the list of suspects so he can solve the mystery. When you have completed either book, you will get a chance to fill out a book report form and bring it to school on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 2, 2017. In addition to independent reading, parents should read aloud at least one chapter book with their child. You may choose a book from the attached 2017 Summer Reading Book List. This shared reading experience will help develop your child’s vocabulary and critical thinking skills. During the read aloud (i.e. after each paragraph, page, or chapter), pause with your child to discuss the book. Ask your child questions, such as: • • • •

What is happening in the book? Can you identify the problem? What is the solution? What do you think is going to happen next? What are some clues that make you think so? What part/passage stands out to you and why?

Our goal is for reading to be fun and meaningful. Through independent and shared reading, we hope your child will experience the “thrills and skills” of reading. We are also asking that you fill out the “Extra! Extra! Read All About Me” poster so that we can get to know all of you as soon as you arrive in August! We are looking forward to seeing all of the great work you bring in after the summer break! Happy Reading, Third Grade Team 3rd Grade – Room 15
