Dear Families, On December 8 and 9, we had our MYP (Middle Years Programme) verification visit from IB (Internationa Bacclaureate). This visit was a team of people from other MYP-verified schools from across the country who came to see to what degree our school was applying tenets of the program on our campus. MYP focuses on grades 6-10 in the American academic system, but for the purposes of this visit, it included our juniors as well. Some of you participated in the process by speaking at our family panel on December 9! The feedback we received from our visitors was particularly positive. Highlights from their observations include the following: -All scholars articulated how they felt valued and respected at our school -It is evident there was a high-level of mutual respect from all parties- school administration, scholars, teachers, and families -Our staff believes strongly that the current leadership team in each school is the right team for the work and that they are competent -Our teachers assess our scholars in holistic ways that will yield a richer understanding of content than would a simple multiple-choice test -In particular, our English, math, fine arts, and science departments were recognized as distinguished for the academic work they spoke to and demonstrated I certainly know it can be hard for our families to take a chance on us as the high school for their children, as we are smaller, offer fewer overall options, and haven’t yet had a graduating class, but I hope that feedback like that shared above helps to reinforce the decision you have made to have your scholar be a part of our community. I am confident that all of the items listed above not only make us

stand out from other high school options, but also make it much more likely that your scholar will succeed in college and in the real world beyond it. There are just six days remaining in the semester! Finals start today! Please continue to push and encourage your scholar to rest, eat well, and put forth his/her best foot. High School Sports Update Our basketball teams are into the thick of their seasons. Our boys team has given valiant effort, but is still looking to pick up its first win of the season and is currently at 0-3 on the season. However, the last game was within single-digits, so it shouldn’t be too much longer before the wins start coming! Our girls team picked up its first win this past Tuesday, 28-26! They currently sit at 1-3 on the season. Both teams play Friday in Arlington- we wish them luck as they continue their seasons! Y.A.M. (Youth Aware of Mental Health) A friendly reminder that Y.A.M. programming will begin for our freshmen scholars January 10. Over the course of three months, they will receive six lessons in their advisory/intervention period, facilitated by faculty for UT Southwestern. Early Release Days Just a friendly reminder that on Friday, December 16 through Wednesday, December 21, all scholars will be released at 1:00pm. The last day of school will be Wednesday, December 21. The first day of return will be Tuesday, January 10. We wish you the best over your holiday season and look forward to seeing everyone in January! 11th-grade trip to Pizza Hut corporate office On November 2, all of our junior scholars got a special opportunity to travel to Pizza Hut to meet various members of the corporate office. Many of the corporate staff came from backgrounds similar to that of our scholars. See below for a link to a video compiled about the exciting visit, led by our Dean of College Prep, Mrs. Villanueva!: https://youtu.be/WFjpKRqgs0w
Dismissal Unfortunately, our neighboring business have continued to receive an influx of our scholars, with some choosing to not respect the community space. To help combat the problem, they have reached out to members of the Irving Police Department to help assist. As a result, police officers will now be present during dismissal hours near these businesses. Please continue to encourage your scholar to meet expectations and to be sure to be cognizant of their neighbors as they make their way home from school- we want to be a respectful neighbor to our neighboring homes and businesses!
