MASS INTENTIONS Join us for Mass!
This Sunday's Gospel is known as the "priestly prayer" of Jesus. The entire passage is Jesus entrusting us to the Father. "When I was with them I protected them ? I guarded them," Jesus says. He asks his Father, "Keep them in your name." In this prayer of Jesus, we see the paradoxical tension of our life as Christians in the world. He anticipates struggle for the believer. He describes it in strong words, words that could even appear frightening to the believer. "I gave them your word, and the world hated them." Not only that, but with our eyes on eternal life, we "do not belong to the world." And yet in the midst of those realities, Jesus doesn't take us out of the world. On the contrary, "as you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world."

Christians live in this tension daily. The call of Jesus often defies nice, neat categories. We uphold justice as virtue yet are invited to love our enemies. We offer gifts and generous hospitality to others while being reminded of the value of temperance. We are called to teach the truth of right and wrong without losing sight of the beam in our own eye. It can be difficult to find the balance in our own lives, and a Church that preaches moral perfection can easily fall under scrutiny when it falls short. In the midst of these complications, Jesus offers a message of hope. He is well aware of the contradictions into which he sends us, and his Father will equip us accordingly. "Consecrate them in truth." "Keep them from the evil one." Jesus does not abandon us to the tensions of our time but remains near at hand by the grace alive in his Church.

Knights of Columbus Holy Family Rosary Night Dear Parishioners, We will be leading a Holy Family Rosary night on Monday May 14th and Tuesday May 15th @ 6PM in support of our Holy Family Prayer Program. The Holy Family Prayer Program is the 17th Marian Prayer Program sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, beginning with the first program – honoring Mary under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe - in 1979. In preparation for the 1982 Centennial of the Order, the second prayer program was initiated, which highlighted the Holy Family. Since then, the Blessed Mother has been honored by her Knights under her titles of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Pochaiv, Our Lady of the Assumption, Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Charity. These Orderwide programs of Marian Prayer have gathered together more than 16 million people at some 140,000 prayer services conducted at local councils and parishes. In reciting the Rosary, we are invited as God's sons and daughters to gaze upon the life of Jesus Christ, through the eyes of Our Lady. We hope you all will join us.
Next Sunday is the feast of Pentecost.— the great feast of the Holy Spirit coming to the apostles. Pentecost comes 50 days after Easter Sunday and is the end of the Easter Season. The Church uses several symbols to depict the Holy Spirit—the dove, wind, tongues of fire, and the color red. Many years ago people would wear red to church on this feast as a sign of the Holy Spirit alive in their parish. Consider wearing something red to church next weekend! Another long time tradition is the novena in honor of the Holy Spirit. Since the feast of the Ascension has been moved from Thursday to Sunday, it would begin the Friday before we celebrate the Ascension (or the Friday of the sixth week of Easter). It recalls the time the Blessed Mother and apostles spent together between the Ascension and Pentecost, praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit—as promised by the risen Lord. In 1879, Pope Leo XIII issued an encyclical, calling on Catholics to nine days of public or private prayer in preparation for Pentecost. Let’s pray this week
