Middle School Families, We hope you have had a rejuvenating summer and are as excited about the 19-20 school year as we are! We can’t wait for the energy of students to hit the school, and are ready to hit the ground running and make this the best year yet. We have been busy planning this summer and have a lot of new things coming your way!

This year, we will start our school year a little differently. Our entire middle school will participate in the Ignite Retreat. We will work to "Find our Fire" as a Crew and as individuals. Students will participate in a week long dive into Lead Academy, analyzing our school vision, core values, and building crew spirit. They will learn about and work together to create an EPIC middle school culture. We will spend three days of the first week of school off campus, August 20th - 22nd (day only, not overnight) at Pleasant Ridge Retreat Center in Marietta, SC. Students will participate in whole group and small group training sessions around key ideas to help build a strong middle school culture. On the final day, students will have an opportunity to put into practice all they have learned as they explore the camp's Alpine Tower! Logistics: This trip can be FREE for all students, all you have to do is the following: -Sign all forms in this packet by 8/19 -Return forms received at meet the teacher or before 10am on 8/19 -Pay the $30 Chromebook fee or make arrangements to pay with front office. We will leave each day in two loads. Tuesday and Wednesday, we will return in time for regular dismissal. Thursday (8/22) will be an extended day so that all students have the opportunity to participate in the Alpine Tower and close out our time at Pleasant Ridge. We aim to return to Lead by 7pm. Please arrange transportation for your child that evening. Dinner will not be provided but we will give additional snacks on Thursday. Lunch each day will be provided by Pleasant Ridge, a gluten and nut free facility. We will also provide one snack every day. Please make us aware of any other dietary needs. Students should wear their Lead Academy uniform shirt, appropriate athletic shorts will be allowed, but standard uniform bottoms are acceptable as well, and closed toed

comfortable shoes. Hats will also be allowed while outside. All students should bring a water bottle and sunscreen. We recommend a small backpack, but not their large school backpack. As always, please leave phones at home or off in a bag as we want students to be able to fully engage in the events of the week. Per the student handbook, if phones are used they will be taken and a parent will need to come to school to have it returned. Don't worry, our staff will take and share pictures! Finally, we firmly believe the phrase our staff often refers to, "[School] Culture is King" and want to do everything we can to create a strong middle school culture from the beginning of this year. To do so, we ask that this trip consist of students only. We greatly appreciate your willingness to partner with us by chaperoning trips, and will ask you to do so in the future, but we recognize there is something unique about students being able to work through and build their character independent of their family at times. We would encourage you to talk with them in the evenings about their learning each day. We also would like to invite you to attend our Friday celebration! On Friday, students will host a lunch and learn in which we will provide lunch while students share all they learned throughout the Ignite Retreat. The lunch and learn will take place Friday at 12:30 at Lead.
