Our goal at La Joya ISD is to provide you with all the needed information for your child to have a great middle school career. Pre-registration is the beginning of that process. We want to ensure that all students have access to educational opportunities that will prepare them for college career and the workforce.

This pre-registration handbook is designed to explain your educational options, and as Superintendent, my expectation is for you to read it; to internalize it, and to ask questions that will prepare each student for a smooth transition from elementary to middle school.

Preregistration for next school year for both incoming and continuing middle school students takes place every year. School personnel visit fifth, sixth, and seventh grade classes to distribute information and materials. Fifth graders may tour the middle schools of their attendance areas and parents are invited to orientation meetings. (Your attention to these preregistration details is greatly appreciated for it is essential that all pre-registration materials be completed accurately and returned promptly as requested by each middle school.) This handbook is provided to acquaint you with the elective courses offered at our district's middle schools, to assist you in completing your child’s pre-registration form and to familiarize you with important information at each of our district’s middle schools. Should you have any questions, please call the counseling office at your child's designated school of attendance or the campus principal.

Middle School Grades 6 – 8 Academic Information Información Académica The Middle School Interdisciplinary Teams: The interdisciplinary team is an essential middle school element. The functions of the interdisciplinary team will include ensuring academic excellence, exploring and infusing curriculum elements appropriate to the students on the team, fostering students’ personal development, and increasing basic skills mastery. Report Cards and Progress Reports:
Report cards with student’s grades and absences in each class are issued to parents at least once every six-weeks. At the end of the first three-weeks of a grading period, parents will be given a written progress report. If the students receive a grade lower than 70 in any class or subject at the end of a grading period, the parent may request a conference with the teacher of that class or subject. Middle School Recent Immigrant Students: English as a Second Language (ESL) is a state funded instructional program designed for 6th through 8th grade Recent Immigrant students, who have been in the U.S. for three years or less and identified as Limited English Proficient by LPAC and have not met exit criteria. This program enables students to acquire Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP), while assisting their families to experience success in a new environment. It also provides effective instruction in content areas based on the TEKS through Sheltered English instruction (SIOP). Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN)
La Joya ISD offers virtual classes for 8th – 12th grade students in academic content areas as well as elective courses to help student meet graduation requirements. Students may take up to two virtual classes per semester. Instruction and content are deliveraed over the internet. The student and instructor are in different locations. The student is responsible for one half of the course fee. The fee will vary from $125 - $200 based on the course and time of enrollment. Students need to visit with their counselor to verify the course fee. Student Eligibility: A student must be younger than 21 years of age and has not graduated from high school. Students currently in grades 8 – 12 are eligible to enroll in TxVSN courses. A student must be enrolled in a Texas School District or Open-Enrollment Charter School seraving grades 8-12. A student must be enrolled in a TxVSN course that satisfies the curriculum requirements for graduation. Students enrolled in a TxVSN course are required to complete state exams (if needed). Students must have regular access to an internet-connected multimedia computer at home. Students should have readiness skills to be a successful online learner. TxVSN courses are regorous. Students may take a TxVSN course as part of normal course load as well as outside normal course load. Note: Core Content Course in English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies (as per La Joya ISD policy will not be ranked).

FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes): Established in 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering, and encouraging coaches and athletes to impact the world for Jesus Christ. V.Y.P. is an internationally-recognized tutoring program in which students who are enrolled are selected based on teacher recommendation. These students go to elementary schools to tutor students and get paid on a monthly basis as an incentive to keep them interested and motivated. This course is limited to no more than 20 students per school year. BAND Band at 6th grade is the beginning study of a musical instrument and is designed for students with no prior experience on a band instrument. Basic skills such as correct hand positioning, tone production, and note Reading will be taught. Several performances will be planned throughout the year. Rental or purchase of a band instrument is required. In the grades 7th and 8th, the instruction in the band instrument continues so that students can participate in marching band in high school. In middle school students have a different teacher for each subject. They will have several teachers, each with his/her own teaching style and expectations. What can parents do to help? o Have your child tour the school. o Meet your child’s counselor and teacher.
Friendships Shift. Middle school students are trying to figure out who’s in, who’s out, and where they stand on the social ladder. What can parents do to help? o o o o
Help your child manage stress by making sure they eat right, exercise & sleep well. Remain approachable. Encourage your child to open up to you & ask advice. Tune in. Look for situations in which you can listen to your child’s conversation. Teach Social Skills. If your child has trouble making friends, find ways to help them socialize.
Your child may become distracted, irritable and sometimes might not even try; his/her grades will show it. Or maybe your child is stuck in a rut of low self-esteem. What can parents do to help? o Don’t overreact. Remind yourself that your child’s behavior is not unusual. For kids this age, everything (social life, extracurricular activities, and school work) seems to heat up at once and they need guidance to stay on top of it all. If your child continues to struggle, schedule a conference with the teacher so you can figure out what steps to take. o Help silence his inner critic (the little voice that tells him he/she is a loser). The child who doesn’t feel good about himself / herself will have a hard time doing well academically. o Stay involved in school. Kids need you more than they realize, and certainly more than they’ll say. Be involved in your child’s academics by attending school programs, athletic events, plays, teacher conferences, and back-to-school nights. That’s what sends a message that you think school is important. o Maintain family traditions and rituals (especially family dinners). Your teenager may sit silently, but these little events will add to a teenager’s sense of security and remind them how much they are loved.

Tips for Middle School Parents
Become informed about your new school by attending orientations, read school guides and student handbooks and visit the school web site regularly for current information.
Your 6th grader doesn’t want you showing up for lunch, but you can stay involved by joining and volunteering.
Students of all ages benefit when family and school cooperate and have a positive relationship. If you have questions or concerns don’t hesitate to call or email the school staff. Know the name of their team, and the school counselor for their grade.
Provide the supplies from the various teachers’ lists. Ask to see their student agendaassignment notebook with communications from the teachers-regularly,
Organization and time management skills must be developed so students will not feel overwhelmed. Be sure to limit after-school recreational activities, provide a quiet study area and expect to see your child working regularly on homework and long-term projects. Set rules about TV and computer use.
Know the dress code for your child’s grade level and check to see that your child is wearing “school uniform” attire daily.
Check the calendar for your specific school– know when report cards go out, if there are early release days and any dates of special activities.
Be sure the main office has current contact information; don’t assume your child will know or share changes in phone numbers or addresses.
Talk to you child about school and peers. Listen for comments that reflect what they are feeling and thinking. Expect your child to make mistakes and have personal struggles. Give them time to think and make decisions about how to handle their problems and deal with consequences.
Peer acceptance and self-esteem issues become increasingly important. Provide opportunities for your child to develop their interests and socialize with friends, but be sure to monitor their choices.

General Information In spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR program includes annual assessments for
Reading and mathematics, grades 3–8 Writing at grades 4 and 7 Science at grades 5 and 8 Social studies at grade 8 End-of-course assessments for English I, English II, Algebra I, biology and U.S history.
Middle School Testing: Middle school students will participate in the following assessments under STAAR: Grade 6 Reading and Math Grade 7 Reading, Math, and Writing Grade 8 Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies Grade 8 (Students enrolled in high school mathematics) Algebra I EOC STAAR Time Limits: TEA established a four (4) hour time limit for both STAAR grades 3-8 assessments and STAAR EOC assessments. TEA notes that a four-hour time limit should provide sufficient time for the majority of students to complete the test. The rationale for time limits aligns Texas testing practices with other timed state and national assessments, i.e. SAT, ACT and AP examinations. Extended time accommodations for students with unique learning needs will continue to be offered. Students, as eighth graders, will choose one of five endorsement areas as part of their graduation plans. Students will meet with their counselor and review personal graduation plan options, then students and their parents/guardians will select an endorsement area and will confirm and sign a personal graduation plan in spring of their eighth grade.
So, what is an endorsement? An Endorsement is a sequence of courses you will take during high school. Although many of your courses will be determined by the graduation plan you select, you will select some courses (electives) guided largely by your plans for the future. In essence, you will personalize your graduation plan to your interest. Ask yourself the following questions to help you decide: After high school, will you continue your education in college or in a trade school or technical college? Do you want to learn a career skill in order to enter full-time work force immediately after high school? Are you interested in a technical field? Are you thinking of entering a profession that requires many years of specialized education?
The answers to the questions above are extremely important for making decisions about your endorsement selection. Your interest and abilities should also guide your decision when selecting your endorsement.

Higher Education Information for Students and Parents
The following information is provided in accordance with Texas Education Code 33.007 which states that a school counselor at an elementary, middle, or junior high school, including an open-enrollment charter school offering those grades, shall advise students and their parents or guardians regarding the importance of postsecondary education, coursework designed to prepare students for postsecondary education, and financial aid availability and requirements.
The Importance of Higher Education: Higher education furthers students’ intellectual and academic development while offering students more career choices and a greater potential earning power. Higher education comes in many forms: workforce education, liberal arts studies, science education, graduate education, and professional education.
Foundation High School Program Distinguished Level of Achievement – Automatic Admission of Students in Top 10%: Graduates of accredited Texas High Schools whose cumulative grade point average ranks them in the top 10% of their graduating class are automatically admitted to any Texas public university upon graduation as a first-time freshman during the 24 months following high school graduation. However, the university is not required to admit the student into his preferred area of study. Students in the top 10% must still submit all required applications and credentials before the university’s deadline in order to be considered for admission. University of Texas @ Austin Modifications to Texas’ Automatic Admission Law SB 175, passed by the 81st Legislature in the spring of 2009, modifies the automatic admission program for The University of Texas at Austin. Under the new law,
The University is to automatically admit enough students to fill 75% of available Texas resident spaces. Each fall by September 15 the university will notify Texas school officials of the class rank that current high school juniors need to attain by the end of their junior year in order to be automatically admitted two years out.
The Advantages of completing the Foundation High School Program with Endorsement(s): Upon graduation, the level of the program completed is documented on the transcript (also known as the Academic Achievement Record) and corresponding seal is applied. The Foundation High School Program with Endorsement(s) provide students with opportunities to complete higher-level course work, particularly in mathematics, science, social studies and languages other than English, thereby: Increasing students’ readiness for higher education and reducing the need for additional preparation for college work; Preparing students for additional advanced work and research in both career and educational settings; Allowing students, in certain instances, to receive college credit for their high school course work; and Enabling students to be eligible for certain financial aid programs for which they would otherwise be ineligible (e.g. the Texas Grant Program). Financial Aid Information: Applying for financial aid to go to college requires a little work. But the fact is, a student will not receive assistance unless they ask for it. And asking for it means completing a FAFSA application. There are three very important things to remember about applying for aid: You only have to complete one financial aid application (either the FAFSA or the TASFA) to start the process. The financial aid office at the college you plan to attend will be in charge of awarding you financial aid. The earlier you submit your application, the more likely you are to get a good financial aid package. Students, you must do the following: Review this handbook and discuss it with your parents. If you have questions, make a list so you can ask your counselor. ALL students are required to take ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Review this handbook and select the electives you want to take next year. Make sure to rank your selections in order of preference. Your counselor will meet with you and give you a Pre-registration form; complete form and make sure you and your parents sign it. You must return the completed Pre-registration form to your counselor. Your counselor will use your selections to make your schedule.
