The concept of race is becoming more and more obsolete since there are hardly any differences among them, scientifically speaking. We can even consider them as merely cosmetic factors. Transracialism wants to review this concept from an updated, current and universal point of view, which would generate an empirical and scientific voidance inherent to the term.

However, biologically, our skin is the same to every human being, just being its colour the only differentiating factor. This is exactly from where the Transracialism project has set off, which has been denominated by its very own creator as a socio-skin analysis. Che Marchesi was in Senegal when all of these ideas became clear and, lured by this ancient concept, his intention was to show that our skin is just an external covering, but all of its connotations are still present in our society’s subconscious.

If there’s one element of the human body which is specifically symbolic, that element may well be the skin. Anatomically speaking, it is the only differentiating element, and as such it conveys certain relevant notions which relate to several social functions. The skin, on its own, can be considered a symbol of social status. It can determine which social group one belongs to, it shows a way of life and even the ideology of certain people.

t is an inherent part of human nature to long for what we do not possess. Blonde women dye their hair brunette and dark haired women dye themselves blonde. Similarly, African women use cosmetics to make their skin fairer and resemble European women, and on the other hand European women try to darken their skin either through natural (sun rays) or artificial (once again cosmetics) means. These become a strange set of visual deceptions in order to emulate what they actually aren’t.

But for this matter it was not going to be enough to just pose a claim from an artistic point of view. A scientific base was needed, and it had to be considered within the highest levels of scientific veracity. For this reason it was impossible to start this project but from the joint consideration of two very different concepts, apparently quite different at first but which come together in order to create a new conception of knowledge and thus generating a new way of expression. Art and science have come together in a never-before heard or seen poetic narration which does not lag any of the accuracy present in a scientific method. Altering the skin, on white and black models, it was then proceeded to lighten the black colour and darken the white one, then drawing four samples of the coloured and uncoloured skins. It is at this moment in which four tests of the different skins show that they are all biologically identical. The skin, which can be observed during the experiment, is just a general medium through which we can express the variety of nuances that make up an identity. A serialized production that is 47

altered through artificial procedures, apparently just at a visual level, but in essence it is the same as all of its other forms. It is through this similarity, not homogeneity, where we find true diversity and it’s through this concept where we can deny the idea of race.

Levi Strauss boldly stated in his “Race and Culture Essay” that it is only through diversity that we reach equality, and we need this socio-skin analysis to get there. We can appreciate as main evidence the four samples of skin that back this theory perfectly, which are exhibited in a stainless steel box ornamented with some religious signs, resembling those of an ontensorium. All of the four samples show multiple series based on the same material, which have been edited by artificial means in order to resemble the others. A contradictory game in which one tries to achieve what the other one wants to hide.

All along the project it is clear that these dangerous aspirations of wanting to become what one is not pose evident problems. The sun, in the first place, is extremely harmful if compulsively resorted to. An excess of UV rays produces a certain mental state denominated as tanorexia, a psychological disorder that curses the sufferer to constantly desire a dark skin tone, one which they will never achieve. On the other hand, the cosmetics used in skin whitening processes are also considered as not completely safe, many of them are very harmful since they are abrasive, and some of them have also proven to be cancerogenic.

In the pictures that were taken of both models of the project onto which later the work was carried out, we can observe how skin is edited in a canvas-like manner achieving a strange image that awakens the viewers’ curiosity and generates a certain level of discomfort. It is a different and unknown image that, on the other hand, does not lack a special kind of beauty within a combination of colours and opposites.
