Ahora que ya han pasado varios años, el AGA se ha establecido como un centro de conocimiento y arte internacional para artistas y diseñadores, donde el uso de las técnicas gráficas se considera sólo un punto de partida.

Con el paso del tiempo el AGA ha desarrollado su estudio profesional, que ofrece una amplia variedad en experiencia y técnicas propias, que proporciona a su vez instalaciones para un grupo creciente de artistas de Ámsterdam y diferentes sitios. La expansión del ámbito con respecto a nuevas capacidades técnicas ahora ya incluye la fotografía y el grabado tradicional, junto con la litografía, la xilografía y el linograbado y la serigrafía sobre papel y materiales textiles, la risografía, la fotografía analógica y el grabado digital (glicee).

Sin embargo la maquinaria y el equipo son solo una parte del puzle. La otra parte sería, obligatoriamente, los artistas y los diseñadores gráficos, y es precisamente la devoción por el apoyo y la estimulación en el desarrollo de dichos artistas lo que diferencia a AGA, permitiendo convertir en realidad las ideas de los artistas y de todos aquellos que usan el taller, que normalmente vienen de ambientes muy distintos.

ast year the Amsterdam Graphic Studio (Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier, or AGA) celebrated its 55th year of existence. With this milestone AGA has become the oldest artistic-graphic print studio in the Netherlands; the studio was set up to give visual artists the chance to make use of the graphic presses from a collective basis. Support for AGA’s developmental path has long come from important and respected sources. Throughout its existence AGA has maintained a very close relationship with the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; not only was AGA’s 25th anniversary celebrated with an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, but representatives of the Stedelijk Museum have regularly served on the board of directors of AGA. Now, many years later, AGA has established itself as a wellknown international art and knowledge center for artists and designers, with the use of graphic techniques being just a point of departure. Over time AGA has developed its professional printing studio, which offers a variety of expertise and techniques in-house; this provides facilities for a growing group of artists from Amsterdam and beyond. The increasing scope of technical capabilities now includes photo- and traditional etching, lithography, wood- and linocut, screenprinting on paper and textile, risoprint, analogue photography and digital printing (glicee). But the machinery and hardware are only one part of the bigger picture- the other part being, necessarily, the artists and graphic designers themselves, and it is the dedication to cultivating and stimulating their development that sets AGA apart in many ways, allowing ideas to be brought to fruition by artists and studio users who hail from vastly divergent backgrounds. As a key part of this stimulation and cultivation, AGA has for the past 10 years been developing an Artist’s in Residence (AiR) program in which research and experiment are the central issues.
El apoyo que ha ido recibiendo a lo largo de la historia se ha originado desde fuentes diversas y muy respetables. A lo largo de toda su existencia, el AGA ha logrado mantener una relación muy estrecha con el Stedelijk Museum de Ámsterdam; no solo el 25 aniversario del atelier se celebró con una exposición en el Stedelijk Museum, sino también, de forma habitual, representantes del museo han formado parte del consejo de administración del taller.

l año pasado el Amsterdam Graphic Studio (Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier, o AGA) celebró su 55 aniversario. Llegar a este hito convierte al AGA en el taller-estudio de grabado más antiguo de los Países Bajos. New context of the Studio Two years ago AGA moved from the Jordaan neighbourhood in the heart of Amsterdam to the Western edge of the city, a neighbourhood called the Kolenkitbuurt. The reason for moving was less than auspicious: political changes and the economic crisis had led to cutbacks of cultural subsidies which were felt nationwide.

AGA is now located in an re-purposed school building that makes up part of an ‘art factory’; this location is home to artists’ studios as well as the new WOW-Amsterdam, a conglomeration of 50 international talents scouted from art academies by cultural institutions including the Stedelijk Museum, FOAM, the Filmacademy, Rijksakademie etc. Artists chosen to live and work at WOW-Amsterdam7 take part in a program called the “3-Packagedeal”- a room/studio, development budget and network possibilities. AGA is one of the partners of a coalition within this program, working together with WOW-Amsterdam to organize joint programs like PRINT!, 39

Hace dos años el AGA se trasladó desde el barrio de Jordaan ubicado en el corazón de Ámsterdam hacia el borde occidental de la ciudad, a un barrio llamado Kolenkitbuurt. La razón del traslado no era nada auspiciosa: los cambios políticos y la crisis económica conllevaron recortes en subvenciones a la cultura que se hicieron sentir por todo el país.
But like the proverbial dark cloud, a silver lining was indeed there, and it revealed itself in ways we had not expected. The Kolenkitbuurt has turned out to be far more dynamic than the climate in the historic city center had been.
