Southland Girls High School Hockey Academy 2015
Distintos Saludos
¡Bienvenida a nuestro colegio y encantadas de conocerte! Southland Girls’ High School is a school with a long proud history. Established in 1879, SGHS is a high performing academic school. We are a girls only school, in fact, we are the third oldest girls only school in New Zealand. The school is quite famous across New Zealand as a “leader in learning” and “expert in the teaching of girls”. We have a very wide curriculum of subjects which allows girls to choose subjects they are passionate about. The school itself is situated in central Invercargill, 10 minutes walk from the main shopping centre and 5 minutes by car to the airport. Next door to the school is the International Sized swimming pool, and down the road the Cycling Velodrome. The school has a Hostel / Boarding House which is 10 minutes walk from the school. 107 girls live there during the school term. The Hostel provides a homely environment for girls and actively promotes girls involvement in all aspects of school life. Homestay accommodation is also another option. Our Homestay families are especially chosen to provide international girls the opportunity to live the kiwi lifestyle in a safe and caring home. One of the most exciting aspects of being a SGHS girl is the huge array of extracurricular sporting and cultural activities that will be available to you. We have 60 activities and it is not uncommon for girls to play three or four sports. Many girls do both cultural (dance, drama, music) and sports activities. We are the only school in the province to offer Dance and we have a high Performing Arts Centre being built currently to cater for the growing demand in this area. However, we have become equally famous for our sporting success. We have the second best Girls Rugby team and sixth best Netball team in New Zealand, and the top Hockey, Waterpolo and Touch Rugby teams in the South Island. Girls love to play sport at our school. They develop high levels of skill, are fiercely competitive and thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie of joining forces to win games. Last year we had two girls from Chile spend two terms with us. They took advantage of every opportunity they were offered. Friendly and cheerful girls, they proved to be very popular with all the SGHS students. It was a great experience for us and the school. We believe we have much to offer and would love to be able to welcome you to our school. Distintos Saludos

The first week – School - Director of International Students will meet with students and organise uniforms and works with students and International Academic Tutor to organise timetable and stationery requirements and integration into school. The first week – Academy – will commence and will involve physical testing during the fitness sessions (Aerobic endurance, anaerobic power, agility, strength, speed) and skill testing during the hockey skills sessions in the afternoon (pushing, slap hit, hit, trapping, reverse hitting, tackling, overhead). The Hockey skills sessions will include some time for individual skill analysis, game analysis, tactics, strategy etc. Games: It would be beneficial to have 11 players in the ‘Hockey Academy’ with at least 1 Goal Keeper to be able to play games. This may involve having the bulk of players (8) from Chile and the rest made up of SGHS players. There will be 3-4 organised (weekend) games played at one of the following locations: Invercargill, Gore or Dunedin. For the games the Coach will pick the girls up and transport them to the game and drop them back to the school hostel. Note: Academy based on an 8 week programme and a minimum of 8 students – but has been altered to meet your timing/flight requirements.
