Dear Parent/Guardian: I can certainly understand why many of you were distressed about today’s news regarding an online threat to the High School. Please know that we sent out a call to parents as soon as we had gathered sufficient information to do so. We then followed up with a call sent out to the entire district shortly thereafter. This morning's notification was sent by Blackboard Connect as an “outreach” message, which sends the message only to the primary phone number and primary email address for each student. In the future, we will expand our messaging to include all of the phone numbers and email addresses listed for each student. Please be sure that we have your up-todate email and phone contact information. As for the information that we are able to share, we are limited by privacy law and Board of Education Policy. Unfortunately, unfounded rumors and unsubstantiated allegations filled social media thereby creating some confusion and concern. In this day and age, we are obligated to take threats of all kinds extremely seriously, and it was because some students brought concerns to our attention that we were able to address this situation. Please continue to encourage your children to report to adults whenever they see something that makes them feel uneasy or unsafe. Rest assured that individuals who engage in such behavior will be dealt with to the fullest extent possible in accordance with the law and the District Code of Conduct. Today, many of you chose to keep your child home from school out of an abundance of caution; however, I hope you will realize that we want to see your child back in school as soon as possible. Counselors are prepared to address any feelings or concerns your children have, and our teachers are ready to continue their important work with them as well. In terms of next steps, it is very important that you understand that we already had in place plans for student assemblies on the topic of safety and cyberbullying on the Internet. These were rescheduled from snowy February to take place tomorrow, April 25. It is timely that these assemblies will be taking place tomorrow, and I encourage you to send your child to school to learn more about this important topic. In addition, this Thursday, we had planned special preparation in classrooms throughout the day to ready students for our final mandatory unannounced lockdown drills. Again, it is fortuitous that we have these preparations planned so that we practice what to do in the event of an emergency. As an extra level of response, police officers (both uniformed and plain-clothes) were in the building several times throughout the day today. Though I have no reason to believe that there will be any further issues with this student or with any others, there will be a continued presence of law enforcement officers to make students and parents feel safer. We have an outstanding relationship with the Rye Brook and Port Chester Police Departments and work collaboratively with them to ensure the safety of all students and staff at the High School. Though I am probably unable to put your mind completely at ease, I hope you understand that we are doing everything in our power to make sure that Port Chester High School is a place where your child and all of our children can feel safe and supported.
