JOHN 13:1-15 Proclaimed in English Antes de la Fiesta de Pascua, sabiendo Jesús que había llegado la hora de salir de este mundo para ir al Padre, así como había amado a los suyos que quedaban en el mundo, los amó hasta el extremo. Hicieron la Cena. Ya el diablo había puesto en el corazón de Judas Iscariote, hijo de Simón, el proyecto de entregar a Jesús. Y él sabía que el Padre había puesto todas las cosas en sus manos, y que de Dios había salido y a Dios volvería. Se levantó mientras cenaba, se quitó el manto, se ató una toalla a la cintura y echó agua en un recipiente. Luego se puso a lavarles los pies a sus discípulos y se los secaba con la toalla. Jesús le contestó: "El que se ha bañado no necesita lavarse más que los pies, pues está del todo limpio. Ustedes están limpios, aunque no todos". Cuando terminó de lavarls los pies y se volvió a poner el manto, se sentó a la mesa y dijo: "¿Entienden ustedes lo que he hecho? Ustedes me llaman: El Señor y el Maestro, les he lavado los pies, también ustedes deben lavarse los pies unos a otros. Les he dado el ejemplo para que ustedes hagan lo mismo que yo les he hecho". Washing of the Feet Lavado de los Pies

From the earliest days of the church the washing of another person’s feet assumed profound religious meaning. For St. Paul (1 Tim 5:10) washing the feet of “the holy ones” was among the tasks to be performed by widows. But it is in the Gospel of John (13:2-20) that we find Jesus washing the feet (the pedilavium) of his disciples. Church tradition has emphasized the humility aspect of this action as well as its servant dimension. Jesus was the “suffering servant” portrayed by the prophet Isaiah. Desde el inicio de la Iglesia el lavado de los pies de otra persona tomó un significado religioso profundo. Para San Pablo (1 Timoteo 5:10), lavar los pies de “los santos” era una de las tareas que realizaban las viudas. Es en el Evangelio de San Juan (13:2-20) donde encontramos a Jesús lavando los pies (el pedilavium) de sus discípulos. La tradición de la Iglesia ha enfatizado el aspecto de la humildad de esta acción como también la dimensión de servicio.
