September is here, school starts, and it’s Welcome Back Sunday. We owe each other real thanks for all the things done in our name during the summer: Backpacks assembled and donated; Daytime Outreach faithfully continued; Water fountains installed; Oil Tank remediated; WHAT maintained; all services had presiders. There are lots of things I’m forgetting, I’m sure. You may all know that I have been very sick following my surgery, unable to work, and struggling with serious infections. Yes, more than one. I miss the Sunday worship, I miss the coffee hour, I miss all of you. I am on the mend and will be back with you soon. This brings me to thank all of you who have brought food for me, called, or visited, or sent cards. I cannot list you all here. I’m especially grateful to Astrid, who started the day I went into surgery, Kris, who doubled down on the tasks that might be left undone in my absence, John as Junior Warden and Jamie, his second, Jill as Senior Warden, and all of you who kept on task. I also want to recognize Lee Wilson, who brought the food over, assembled the back packs, and checkedin on your behalf. I have never been this sick: thank you for your care, your prayers, and your food, which by the way was excellent! If we treat all our sick this well, we are truly the inbreaking of God’s reign. ¡Bienvenido de nuevo! Ha sido un verano emocionante aquí en Vancouver en San Lucas ~ San Lucas, y en todo el país y en todo el mundo para muchos de nuestros feligreses. En los últimos meses, hemos dado la bienvenida a una nueva administradora parroquial, Astrid Caruso, que está recogiendo las responsabilidades de su puesto rápidamente. El verano se acaba, pero mientras escribo esto seguimos sofocando en los 90's con mucho humo en el aire. El humo me recuerda que debemos prestar más atención al cuidado de nuestro medio ambiente. El calor me recuerda lo afortunados que somos en el NW por tener agua potable abundante. Para ambos extremos, hemos instalado dos nuevas fuentes de agua potable con llenadoras de botellas que proporcionan agua filtrada para nosotros y para nuestros numerosos invitados. La posibilidad de utilizar botellas recargables nos ayudará a dejar de proporcionar agua en botellas de plástico de un solo uso. Gracias a todos los que contribuyeron a este proyecto.

El domingo 9 de septiembre celebraremos la vuelta a estar juntos después de un verano lleno de vacaciones, campamentos y otras aventuras, con una hora de bienvenida especial para el café Barbecue Welcome Back Sunday entre los servicios de 10 AM y 1 PM. Los miembros de la Junta Parroquial cocinarán hamburguesas y perritos, y todos pueden traer guarniciones para compartir.

Tiempo lo es todo. Nuestro envejecido sistema de sonido del santuario decidió comenzar a no actuar bien cuando el Obispo Presidente llegó a la ciudad en junio. Es posible que haya estado en un servicio o dos donde no teníamos ningún sistema de sonido. En agosto, hicimos un pedido para reemplazar varios componentes para actualizar nuestro sistema. La búsqueda de un Coordinador del Ministerio de Juventud y Familias y un Supervisor de Guardería continúa en marcha. Tenemos candidatos que deseamos entrevistar pronto, y las solicitudes todavía se están aceptando. Acabamos de enterarnos que el comité de Subvenciones de Desarrollo Congregacional de la Diócesis de Olimpia ha decidido recomendar nuestra subvención para apoyar el puesto de Coordinador del Ministerio de Juventud y Familias, para un financiamiento total de $ 7500 en 2019. Con esta subvención, también participaremos en el Colegio de Desarrollo Congregacional de la Diócesis de Olimpia. CAMPAÑA PARA ÚTILES ESCOLARES ¡Gracias, SL2, por su generosidad! Este año, 52 estudiantes recibieron mochilas llenas de útiles escolares para su escuela y grado en particular. De los 52, 14 eran de fuera de San Lucas, 38 de SL2. Los niños iban desde Pre-K hasta la escuela secundaria y eran de 15 escuelas diferentes en los distritos de Vancouver o Evergreen. Se ofrecen almuerzos caseros que contienen sándwich y fruta, bolsas con alimentos no perecederos y bolsas de comida para aquellos con instalaciones para cocinar. También tenemos artículos de ropa y higiene. Hay 2 formas de ayudarnos con los kits de higiene. Cuando viaje, guarde los artículos de tamaño de viaje:

FERIA DE “PRIDE” En un día caluroso, el segundo sábado de julio, SL2 tenía un stand en la Feria del Orgullo. Fue un tiempo maravilloso. Muchos SL2ers salieron a trabajar en el stand. 79º CONVENCIÓN GENERAL La Convención General trienial de la Iglesia Episcopal se reunió en Austin, TX el julio. SENIOR WARDEN REPORT Welcome Back! It has been an exciting summer here in Vancouver at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas, and out across the country and around the world for many of our parishioners. Over the past few months, we have welcomed a New Parish Administrator, Astrid Caruso, who is picking up the responsibilities of her position quickly. We have prayed for and supported Fr. Jaime Case and his family, through his surgery and subsequent trips back and forth to the hospital. We have quietly said good-bye to our Nursery Supervisor, Katy Woodward, as she advances in her full-time job away from St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. Sunday, September 9th we will celebrate being back together after a summer full of vacations, camps and other adventures, with a special Welcome Back Sunday Barbecue Coffee Hour between the 10 AM and 1 PM services. Vestry members will be cooking hamburgers and corn dogs, and all are welcome to bring side dishes to share. The search for a Youth and Families Ministry Coordinator and a Nursery Supervisor continues to be underway. We have candidates we wish to interview soon, and applications are still being accepted. We have just learned that the Diocese of Olympia Congregational Development Grants committee has decided to recommend our grant to support the position of Youth and Families Ministry Coordinator, for full funding in the amount of $7,500 in 2019. With this grant, we will also be participating in the Diocese of Olympia College of Congregational Development. You may recall that last

spring we were looking to work with a consultant from the College of Congregational Development on a Mission, Vision and Goal-Setting process. The Mission, Vision and Goal-Setting project is being put on hold temporarily, until we send our own clergy, staff and/or lay leadership to attend the College of Congregational Development. JUNIOR WARDEN REPORT Summer is ending but as I write this we’re still sweltering in the 90’s with lots of smoke in the air. The smoke reminds me that we need to pay better attention to caring for our environment. The heat reminds me of how lucky we are in the NW to have plentiful clean drinking water. To both ends we have installed two new drinking fountains with bottle fillers providing filtered water for us and our many outreach guests. The ability to use refillable bottles will help wean us from providing water in one-time-use plastic bottles. Thanks to everyone that contributed to this project. Timing is everything. Our aging sanctuary sound system decided to start acting up right as the Presiding Bishop came to town in June. You may have been at a service or two where we had no sound system at all. In August we placed an order to replace several components to bring our system up to date. Most notably

we’ll have new speakers up front so the celebrants will be able to hear and we’ll have the ability to balance the volume so people in the back can hear as well as those in the front. We’ll also have the ability to adjust the system remotely with presets so we can recover when things get out of whack. We hope to have this all up and running by the end of September. Believe it or not we are finally placing an order to replace our sign on Fourth Plain. The new sign will have much the same shape as our current sign but will be much cleaner and sharper and will project a much better image to the community. This too we hope to have installed by the end of September. Our meeting with the mayor is paying off as we see signs that the city’s design for improved drainage on 27th Street is moving forward and is still scheduled to complete by November. You may have noticed the “Locate” paintings all the way up to F Street. While contemplating what we would do on our side of the property line I discovered the man-hole cover outside the kitchen door wasn’t a storm drain; it was an abandoned heating oil tank sitting there for probably forty years from when we converted to natural gas. Further investigation revealed it still had oil in it and could hold over 1,700 gallons. We quickly hired a contractor to drain and clean the tank and fill it with concrete. It contained only about 100 gallons and very fortunately none had leaked into the soil. Now our regrading for drainage can proceed. John Mathieu

YOUTH & FAMILIES COORDINATOR SL2 is looking for a full-time lay minister specializing in youth and children’s ministries. This is a new, startup, entrepreneurial, multicultural ministry. Certification in youth or childhood ministries, a BA or BS in youth or childhood formation, or demonstrable experience with youth or children is required. English is a must, Spanish is helpful for communicating with the parents. • Work with Rector to start up High School youth group consisting of second and third generation Latino immigrants funneled in through our Quinces. Combine membership with youth from the English service. • Work with Rector to start Junior High youth group consisting of second generation Latino immigrants funneled in through our First Communion classes. We are currently looking for a part-time Nursery Supervisor to oversee our Sunday nursery program. SL2 provides a safe and joyful nursery experience for children up to the age of three. Our staff is well trained and has the proper experience and supervision to care for children. The supervisor will organize, support, and supervise the operation of the nursery. A qualified applicant must be at least 21 years of age, trained in birth through 3 child care, certified in Safeguarding God’s Children training (this can also be taken after hire), and pass background checks. STRANGE COINCIDENCE We have all seen and appreciated the Nunc Dimittis stained glass window, on the south side, nearest to the St. Luke window. The Nunc dimittis / nʊŋk dɪˈmɪtɪs / (also Song of Simeon or Canticle of Simeon) is a canticle from a text in the second chapter of Luke named after its first words in Latin, meaning 'Lord, you now have set your servant free...'. Simeon was a devout Jew who, according to the Book

of Luke, had been promised by the Holy Ghost that he would not die until he had seen the Savior. When Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of consecration of the firstborn son, Simeon was there, and he took Jesus into his arms and uttered words rendered variously as ‘he can die in Peace’. This window was created in 1962 by world-renown artist Gabriel Loire. The Canticles of Luke were suggested to the artist, and three were made for our church. There is a strange, perhaps coincidence, related to our first rector, Reverend John D. McCarty. He came up with the “St. Luke’s Parish” designation, most probably. Surely he read and preached on the Canticles while in Vancouver. He may have also preached on the Nunc Dimittis canticle earlier while serving at the front lines in the Mexican American war as chaplain. Four years ago I was doing online research on Rev. McCarty. I found a newspaper article from 1881, from a newspaper in Washington, D.C. Rev. McCarty had retired to that city to be with his son, Daniel. The newspaper published the contents of Rev. McCarty’s will. In the will, Rev. McCarty bequeathed various sums of money from his estate to family members and other items to his son, Daniel. One of his bequeaths however is particularly interesting. He designated $40 to be given to his twin brother, Simeon, of western Pennsylvania. That was nice, except John D. McCarty DID NOT HAVE a twin brother. As the good reverend died several months later after signing the will, perhaps he was making a statement to everyone with his mention of Luke’s Simeon. He felt that it was time to die, and he felt that he had, in his life’s work, seen the Savior. Luke 2:29-32 (Nunc Dimittis canticle) Lord, you now have set your servant free to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel. BISHOP’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE October 4-5 I am going to the Bishop’s Leadership Conference to learn more about preparing for the changing size of our Parish. All adults are welcome to join us in attending this conference. There is a $20 fee per person, but we have funds to cover this cost. If you are interested in going, please contact the office by Friday, September 7. It is to be held at Fort Worden State Park, which is 3.5 hours from Vancouver. We should arrive the night before (Wednesday, Oct. 3), which I hope to find out more about before the date. Carpooling would be an excellent way to go. ELLEN RICHARDSON VISITS SL2 Nationally known author, physician, and Episcopal priest is coming to St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas October 1314! Author of Holy Dying: Stories and Struggles will be here to discuss her book and lead a conversation about how we prepare and how we are not prepared for the experience everyone will encounter at some point. Recently, a number of our members read her book and there have been significant conversations as a result. The book recounts a number of actual stories about how people and their friends and families have dealt with dying as well as with the medical community. Rev. Dr. Ellen Richardson, who is a physician and who became an Episcopal priest, now serves a parish in Williamston, North Carolina. She draws upon her experiences with patients as she was a doctor, then a Hospice doctor, and now a priest in a parish. Our own Life Goes On group, which meets monthly at Glenwood, has read the book and spent several meetings in rich conversation about it.

SUNDAY SCHOOL Classes will begin on Sunday, September 16 at 9:45 AM. We look forward to seeing the children return and welcome new students. Classes are for children ages 3-10 years. We will continue to use the Godly Play curriculum. Registration forms will be available on Welcome Back Sunday in the Narthex and in the classroom on our first Sunday of classes.

WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP Women’s Spirituality Group resumes our 2nd Saturday monthly sessions on Saturday, October 14, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This is a time to come together and expand our spiritual experiences with a feminine view. All women are welcome as we begin another year of reading, studying and sharing.

Our new study book is Super Girls and Halos by Maria Morera Johnson. We look at the questions like “What do Wonder Women and St. Katharine Drexel have in common? How about St. Clare of Assisi and Rey, the ingénue from Star Wars: The Force Awakens? The answers might surprise you. We hope you’ll join us this year as we explore these super girls and maybe release the super girl in you. We will have 12 books available for a suggested donation of $14 beginning Sunday, September 16. Scholarships are available. NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM September begins a new music season again at SL2. Our Parish Choir will sing for the first time this Fall on September 16th. The first Wednesday evening rehearsals for both the choir and handbell ringers will be on the 26th. Bells meet at 6 PM and singers start at 7 PM. W.H.A.T. SHELTER UPDATE The shelter continues to serve 18 women. The exciting thing is some of the women are transitioning into permanent housing. The W.H.A.T. committee decided it would be nice to welcome these women by giving them a gift basket containing small items to get them started. We are using laundry baskets (everyone needs one) and thanks to your generosity are able to pack them full of things like paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, pot holders, towel sets, shower curtains and hooks, pretty candles, food, laundry supplies, dish soap, gift cards for incidentals, etc. We have given out 3 baskets recently and have 3 more ready to go. The women are so excited to get them. It means a lot to have their own things, especially if they are going into a roommate situation. Thank you for helping the women get a new start. The W.H.A.T. committee meets the first Tuesday of each month (Sept. 4 at 6:30 PM this month). We try to meet before the vestry meeting in case something comes up that the vestry needs to act upon. Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting or if you are interested, join the committee. This is an amazing ministry that we are engaged in and we are really helping to change lives. DAYTIME OUTREACH Outreach assists those in need in our community Monday-Friday, 9:15 AM-12:00 PM. Homemade lunches containing a sandwich and fruit, road bags containing non-perishable food items, and food bags

for those with cooking facilities are available. We also have clothing and hygiene items. There are 2 ways to help us with the hygiene kits. When you travel, save the travel size items for us: soap, lotion, shampoo and conditioner. We fill quart size bags with these items, plus toothpaste and a toothbrush. If you are not planning to travel, you can go to the Dollar Store and buy their family size bottle of lotion, shampoo, and conditioner—these bottles are about 16 oz. We buy 3 oz bottles and for each $1 large bottle, we can fill 6 small bottles. With the extreme heat this summer, we also need sunscreen. One family size bottle of liquid sunscreen can be poured into 3oz bottles and help 6 of our guests avoid sunburn. We also try to keep razors, deodorant, wipes, combs and brushes, Kleenex, and wash cloths available. Look for sales: Safeway regularly has deodorant at $1 each, thrift stores sell gently used wash cloths, and Dollar Stores sell 10 packs of razors for $1 and multi packs for combs for $1. The Outreach Committee and those we serve are grateful for the continuing generosity of SL2. If you are interested in volunteering to help, please contact Russ Roseberry. We welcome additional help!

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE REPORT Thank you, SL2, for your generosity! This year 52 students received backpacks full of school supplies for their particular school and grade. Of the 52, 14 were from outside our parish, 38 from SL2. The kids ranged from Pre-K to high school and were from 15 different schools in the Vancouver or Evergreen districts. Your generous contributions of school supplies and monetary donations made this possible. The kids were excited to see they had all they needed to start school. Thank you to those who helped me assemble the backpacks: Isabel and Yasmin Casarez Barba, Fleur Romagosa, and Kris Lawless. And thanks to all of you who

THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO helped move the backpacks to the church for the Blessing of the Backpacks. The leftover supplies will be donated to Washington Elementary. The remaining donated funds will be divided between the Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools and Evergreen School District Foundation. RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE There will be a Red Cross Blood Drive on November 30, 2018 from 1 PM – 6 PM at the YWCA office. We are looking for volunteers as well as blood donors! Please be in touch with Peggy Sue Snoey at 360-9077606 if you are able to help out.

NEW DRINKING FOUNTAINS Many of you contributed in the fundraiser to replace two drinking fountains with new ones that include bottle filling stations. There is very good news: the funds that you provided allowed the purchase of two drinking fountains. More good news: the fountains arrived ahead of schedule and have been installed! PARISH LIBRARY MUSINGS The library has acquired, through a donation, a series of eight small books under the general title of The Church’s Teachings for a Changing World. Each book in the series is penned by Episcopal visionary leaders and thinkers exploring today's timely issues: Church Meets World, A Faith for the Future, The Episcopal Story are just a few of the titles. Check this series out at the Library table during Coffee Hour on September 16. Remember that book donations are welcome to the Library. Place them in the box marked for: Library donation. Also, we welcome any suggestions to the committee for future acquisitions. If you would like to purchase a book to donate to the Library please consider: Topics on Mercy, biography of Martin Luther, any titles written by Michael Curry or Harold Kushner. We have multiple duplicates of some titles and these will be available and on display for you to add to your home library at no charge during Coffee Hour on September 16. SOUND SYSTEM UPDATE You may have noticed that we have a very quirky sound system. It has become increasingly hard to adjust and keep adjusted. Much of the current system is 30 years old. A recent failure in one of the components and general deterioration caused the decision to work toward replacing the system. After research and consultation the replacement components have been ordered and when they arrive they will be professionally installed and adjusted.

LUNCH BUNCH The second Tuesday of each month at noon the Lunch Bunch meets to share food, companionship, and a special program. On September 11, Joseph Ziemba will give a lecture and presentation about the pleasures of reading and the care for your most loved books. The talk will bring us to Thomas Jefferson and his role in establishing the Library of Congress and Joseph’s ex-

Vancouver Peace & Justice Fair is Saturday, September 8 from 9 AM-4 PM at Esther Short Park. This is our fifteenth anniversary of the largest event of its kind in the entire Pacific Northwest. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex to help out with shifts at our parish booth. We also invite ideas for our display to make it different from past years. KIDS´ NIGHT OUT We provide childcare at the Church from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for parents attending Friday Night Live! Next session is Friday, September 28. We will take little ones 03 years old in the nursery, and 3-10-year-olds in the Children’s chapel. We will provide food for the older ones, and games and entertainment. Donations are accepted, but not required. We do require a parent to complete a permission/information form before leaving your child with us. Forms and Sign-Up sheet for Childcare are next to the FNL attending sheet, by the kitchen door.

PRIDE FAIR REPORT On a hot day, the second Saturday of July, SL2 had a booth at the Pride Fair. It was a wonderful time. Many SL2ers came out to work the booth. We handed out "Fabulous" buttons and rainbow lanyards with an attachment that had SL2's name and address. On the back we had a quote from Presiding Bishop Curry: "Love God, Love your neighbors, and, while you are at it, love yourself". Many people came by the booth and commented on the posters of Bishop Curry and his quotes. Lizzy Hennessy also took time from running the SL2 Vacation Bible School to make a poster showing the growth of LGBTQ rights to full equality in the Episcopal Church. Thank you, Lizzy! Full access to trial-use marriage rites giving all Episcopalians the ability to be married by their priests in their home churches. New plan for liturgical and prayer book revision that sets the stage for the creation of new liturgical texts to respond to the needs of Episcopalians across the Church while continuing to use the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Responding to the voices and stories of women, from a liturgy where bishops offered laments and confession for the Church’s role in sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse to Resolution D087 that allows deputies to bring infant children on the floor of the House of Deputies to feed them. Acting on immigration Convention passed three resolutions on immigration issues. Resolution C033 puts the Church on record as respecting the dignity of immigrants and outlines how public policy should reflect that belief; A178 takes a forceful stand against family separations and treatment of immigrant parents and children; and C009, titled “Becoming a Sanctuary Church,” encourages Episcopalians and congregations to reach out to and support immigrants facing deportation, including by providing physical sanctuary if they choose. Challenging injustices in Israeli-Palestinian conflict General Convention wrapped up its consideration of resolutions relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with mixed results due largely to the House of Bishops’ unwillingness to take many of the bolder steps urged by the House of Deputies.

The triennial General Convention of the Episcopal Church met in Austin, TX in early July. This is the governing body of our national Church and includes the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops, comprised of members from each diocese. Some of the most important decisions from this convention include: $134 million budget adopted reflecting the presiding bishop’s priorities of evangelism, racial reconciliation and justice, and creation care.
