Our Parish Mission Statement The Parish of St. John Bosco is a multi-cultural, multi-lingual Catholic Faith community that proclaims Jesus Christ. From the Desk of Fr. Pat It is with a very sad heart that I find myself writing to you this weekend. For the past month or so, as a faith community, we find ourselves, once again, passing through a very dark moment in the life of the Church we know and love. Once again, news reports are daily detailing for us the sins and crimes of Cardinals, Bishops and priests who have betrayed their trust and have abused innocent children, have engaged in serious immoral actions and have continued to try to cover-up these crimes and sins. After 16 years, I once again find myself asking you, the People of God, for forgiveness for the unspeakable crimes and sins of Bishops and priests who have betrayed you. This is a painful time for you, but, I want you to know, it is also a very painful time for the Salesian Community of your parish who wants so much to serve you as best as we can. We are ashamed. We are embarrassed. We are angry. We are confused. And, like many of you, we feel disgusted: how could this happen again? How could cover-ups continue? As one priest I know put it: “The vile revelations of the actions of so many priests who held bread in their hands, spoke the words of consecration and defiled their Eucharistic Lord by their abuse of children are beyond comprehension and leave one’s heart and soul devasted.” On August 30, 2018, our Provincial, Father Timothy Zak, SDB, wrote a letter to the entire Salesian Family. In it he writes: “We, Salesian religious and the Salesian Family, acknowledge that the wounds caused by abuse never disappear… we feel the shame and sorrow of abuse caused by our own members, we apologize to all those affected by abuse, and with deep conviction, we renew our pledge to create a safe environment in our communities and educational– pastoral presences…. As disciples of Jesus, we stand with the little ones and the vulnerable, striving to protect them from harm, condemning any sin against their inherent dignity and integrity.” We, the Salesian Community serving you, share these sentiments of our Father Provincial as our own. We also join our voices to a growing number of laity, priests, Bishops and Cardinals who are asking for a response to the allegations of cover-ups even in the highest levels of the Church hierarchy. These things should not continue! On a personal level: I love the Church; I love being Catholic; I love being a Salesian priest… and yet, I feel sick in my heart that I have to be writing this to you. It is so sad. My faith is challenged: who do I believe anymore? From all sides I feel challenged: there are terrible accusations that are true; there have been accusations that have proven to be false. There are cover-ups; at the same time I know of priest who spent two years in prison because he would not reveal what

he heard in Confession! Some of my brother priests have done truly horrible and unspeakable things— but I also know there are far many more good and holy priests who want to do nothing more than love and serve God and His people and who are pained and burdened by this new on-slaught of allegations. Where do we go from here? I am not sure, but there are some things that I am sure about: First: my faith, your faith cannot depend upon a priest, a bishop— or even the Pope. Our faith rests in Jesus Christ and Him alone. The only way we will get through this as individuals and as a community is if each one of us has a deep, personal and intimate relationship with Jesus. Jesus must be my friend— my rock— my stronghold and my fortress. With Jesus I stand firm. My faith has to be in Jesus alone. Second: I know that the Church has passed through periods much darker than we are now living. It has never been the popes, or cardinals or the bishops or the priests or religious who have kept the Church alive and growing; it has always been the deep faith and fidelity of you, our lay people. A common remark we sometimes hear is that a sure sign that the Church is a divine institution is that through the centuries, her bishops, priests and popes have not succeeded in destroying her. As we know from our present experience today, there is deep truth in this. The faith of the people and their love and devotion to the Church in spite of the weaknesses of their shepherds is what has always kept the Church alive. I want to thank you for your faith and for your love for the Church, regardless of the sinfulness of your shepherds. We need to stay faithful to the Church and to her authentic magisterium. Thank you for giving me this witness to the faith! It is a continual source of strength to me personally as well as to the Salesian community that serves you. Thank you! Third: once again, I ask you to please pray for your priests. We need your prayers. I often reflect we priests get praised and honored for raising money, building buildings, and doing all kinds of material things— good things, but certainly not what are the most important. Pray that we can be men who have a personal relationship with Jesus; men who are willing to spend themselves for their people; men who give God first priority in their own lives and in the lives of their people. It has been said; No priest goes to heaven or hell alone. Those are terrifying words. Pray that we be holy priests. This is a dark moment for the Church, but we already know the end of the story: I am the Light of the World! Jesus is alive and working and present in His Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against her! Please pray for me and all of the Salesians in the parish! God bless you!

Desde el Escritorio de P. Pat Es con un corazón muy triste que me encuentro escribiéndote este fin de semana. Durante el ultimo mes mas o menos, como una comunidad de fe, nos encontramos, una vez más, pasando por un momento muy oscuro en la vida de la Iglesia que conocemos y amamos. Una vez más, las noticias nos detallan diariamente los pecados y crímenes de los Cardenales, Obispos y sacerdotes que han traicionado su confianza y han abusado de niños inocentes, han participado en acciones inmorales y muy graves y siguen intentado de encubrir estos crímenes y pecados. Después de 16 años, una vez más me encuentro pidiéndoles, al Pueblo de Dios, perdón por los crímenes y pecados indescriptibles de los obispos y sacerdotes que los han traicionado. Este es un momento doloroso para ustedes, pero, quiero que sepan, que también es un momento muy doloroso para la Comunidad Salesiana de su parroquia que desea tanto servirles lo mejor que podamos. Estamos avergonzados. Estamos molestos. Estamos confundidos. Y, como muchos de ustedes, nos sentimos disgustados: ¿cómo puede pasar esto de nuevo? ¿Cómo pueden continuar los encubrimientos? A nivel personal: amo a la Iglesia; me encanta ser Católico; Me encanta ser un sacerdote salesiano ... y sin embargo, me siento mal en mi corazón por tener que escribirte esto. Es muy triste. Mi fe esta siendo desafiada: ¿a quién creo más? Por todos lados me siento desafiado: hay terribles acusaciones que son ciertas; ha habido acusaciones que han demostrado ser falsas. Hay encubrimientos; al mismo tiempo, se de un sacerdote

que pasó dos años en prisión por no revelar lo que escuchó en Confesión! Algunos de mis hermanos sacerdotes han hecho cosas realmente horribles e indescriptibles, pero también sé que hay muchísimos más sacerdotes santos y buenos que no quieren hacer nada más que amar y servir a Dios y a su pueblo, y que están dolidos y agobiados por esta nueva avalancha de acusaciones. ¿Y de aquí hacia dónde vamos? No estoy seguro, pero si estoy seguro de algunas cosas: Primero: mi fe, su fe no debe depender de un sacerdote, un obispo o incluso del Papa. Nuestra fe es en Jesucristo y solo en Él. La única forma de superar esto como individuos y como comunidad es si cada uno de nosotros tenemos una relación profunda, personal e íntima con Jesús. Jesús debe ser mi amigo, mi roca, mi fuerza y mi fortaleza. Con Jesús, me mantengo firme. Mi fe tiene que estar solo en Jesús. Segundo: sé que la Iglesia ha pasado por períodos mucho más oscuros de los que vivimos ahora. Nunca han sido los papas, ni los cardenales, ni los obispos, ni los sacerdotes, ni los religiosos, quienes han mantenido viva y creciendo a la Iglesia; siempre ha sido la fe profunda y la fidelidad de ustedes, nuestros laicos. Un comentario común que a veces escuchamos es que una señal segura de que la Iglesia es una institución divina es que a través de los siglos, sus obispos, sacerdotes y papas no han logrado destruirla. Como sabemos por nuestra experiencia actual de hoy, hay una verdad profunda en esto. La fe de la gente y su amor y devoción a la Iglesia a pesar de las debilidades de sus pastores es lo que siempre ha mantenido viva a la Iglesia. Quiero agradecerles por su fe y por su amor a la Iglesia, independientemente del pecado de sus pastores. Necesitamos ser fieles a la Iglesia y a su auténtico magisterio. ¡Gracias por darme este testimonio de la fe! Es una fuente continua de fortaleza para mí personalmente, así como para la comunidad salesiana que te sirve. ¡Gracias! Tercero: una vez más, les pido que por favor oren por sus sacerdotes. E com tristeza que escrevo para vocês nesse fim de semana. Ultimamente estamos passando por momentos muito tristes na vida da Igreja que tanto amamos. A mídia vem detalhando os pecados e crimes de cardeais, bispos e padres que traíram a sua fe e abusaram de crianças, cometendo serias imoralidades e vem tentando encobrir os seus crimes e pecados. Após 16 anos volto a pedir perdão ao povo de Deus pelos crimes e pecados de bispos e padres que traíram a vocês. Isso traz muita tristeza a vocês e comunidade salesiana de nossa paroquia que quer servir a vocês da melhor forma. Sentimos vergonha, tristeza e raiva. Estamos confusos e questionamos: como isso pode acontecer de novo e ser encoberto? Um padre comentava: como e possível que mãos que consagram abusem de crianças? Isso e inaceitável e devastador. No dia 30 de agosto nosso Provincial Fr. Timothy Zak escreveu a toda família salesiana: “Nos família salesiana reconhecemos os danos causados pelos abusos que nunca vão desaparecer... sentimos vergonha e pedimos desculpas por aquelas pessoas ligadas a nós e renovamos o nosso compromisso de criar um ambiente seguro em nossas comunidades e presenças pastorais. Como discípulos de Jesus nos defendemos os mais vulneráveis e condenamos todo pecado. Assumimos para nós os sentimentos do nosso Provincial. Nos estamos do lado de todos aqueles que clamam por justiça e pelo fim de todo tipo de desrespeito. Eu amo a Igreja, me orgulho de ser católico, de ser padre salesiano.. e me sinto muito mal escrevendo sobre esse assunto. Eu me sinto desafiado de todos os lados pois há acusações verdadeira e acusações falsas também. Há alguns padres que envergonham a Igreja, mas a maioria absoluta são bons e buscam a santidade servindo a Deus e a seu povo. Isso e muito importante: 1º: a nossa fe não pode depender de um padre, um bispo ou ate mesmo do papa. A nossa fe se fundamenta unicamente em Jesus, por isso vamos aumentar o nosso conhecimento e relacionamento com Jesus. Ele e nosso amigo, nossa rocha e nossa fortaleza. 2º: nos sabemos que a Igreja já passou por períodos de duras provações e o que a manteve firme foi a fe do povo de Deus. Uma das provas de que a Igreja e divina e que ela existe por mais de dois mil anos e ninguém pode destruí-la. Eu agradeço a vocês pelo testemunho de fe, mesmo diante do fracasso de alguns pastores da Igreja. Nos precisamos manter a nossa fe no autentico magistério da igreja. O testemunho de vocês emana como uma fonte água límpida. Obrigado! 3º: Novamente eu peco a vocês, por favor rezem pelos padres. Nós precisamos das orações de vocês. Muitas vezes somos admirados por construir templos, levantar bens materiais para os mais necessitados, isso não é o mais importante. Rezem para que os padres sejam mais parecidos com Jesus, que sejam homens cuja prioridade seja o serviço pastoral do seu povo. O padre acompanha o seu povo ao céu ou ao inferno. Vamos juntos nos esforçar para sermos mais Santos. Estamos passando por momentos escuros, mas já sabemos o fim da história: “Eu sou a Luz do mundo”, diz Jesus! Ele está vivo e cuidando de sua Igreja que por mais provações que possam aparecer, nunca será derrotada. Por favor rezem por mim e pelos salesianos de nossa paroquia. Que Deus te abençoe!

Ze smutkiem pisze te słowa. Przez ostatni miesiąc przechodzimy przez bardzo trudny okres dotyczący kościoła. Ponownie media informują nas dziennie o grzechach i przestępstwach kardynałów, biskupów i księży, którzy podważyli nasze zaufanie i seksualnie molestowali niewinne dzieci.Probowano to wszystko ukryć i zatuszować. Po 16 latach ponownie proszę Was katolików o przebaczenie w imieniu tych księży którzy was zdradzili.Jest to bardzo bolesny moment dla wszyskich chrześcijan jak również dla nas , księży Salezjanów.Jestesmy , oburzeni , zawstydzeni i zagniewani.Nie możemy sami wyobrazić sobie jak to się stało .Dlaczego wszystkie te przewinienia chciano ukryć ? Jeden z księży skomentował to: straszne przestępstwa księży , trzymających w rękach komunie święta modlących się i jednocześnie wykorzystujących seksualnie niewinne dzieci pozostawiło wielka ranę na ich psychice.Jest to nie do wyobrażenia. 30 sierpnia2018 roku nasz Prowincjał ksiądz Timothy Żak napisał: My jako rodzina braci Salezjanów zdajemy sobie sprawę , ze rany spowodowane molestowaniem nigdy nie znikną . Czujemy smutek i wstyd za przestępstwa popełnione przez naszych księży , przepraszamy wszystkich pokrzywdzonych i jednocześnie obiecujemy stworzyć bezpieczne środowisko w społeczności katolickiej i w placówkach nauczania. Jako apostołowie Chrystusa będziemy opiekować się dziećmi aby nic złego ich nie spotkało, będziemy ich chronić oraz mieć w opiece, aby już nigdy nie doznały żadnych krzywd. Jednoczymy się z księdzem Prowincjałem w tej deklaracji. Potępiamy grzechy popełnione przez naszych biskupów i księży. To nie powinno nigdy mieć miejsca. Osobiście kocham kościół, kocham być katolikiem i księdzem Salezjaninem., jestem chory na sercu, ze muszę o tym wszystkim pisać. To bardzo smutne. Moja wiara jest poddana próbie; komu mam dalej wierzyć? Posadzenia wobec księży są prawdziwe i dowiedzone, jednak jest sporo i fałszywych posądzeń .Jaki jest punkt wyjścia? Nie jestem pewien, jednak istnieje wiele stwierdzeń i nie mam wobec nich żadnych wątpliwości. Przede wszystkim nasza wiara nie powinna być uzależniona od żadnego księdza czy biskupa. Wiara nasza spoczywa w Jezusie Chrystusie. Kościół przechodził przez okres zachwiań i niepewności. W tym czasie załamań to nie biskupi czy księża utrzymali kościół , lecz wiara , poświęcenie i oddanie ludzi.Wielu księży i biskupów zdradziło kościół , nadal jest on jednak żywy dzięki głębokiej wierze i czci wiernych. Tak powinnismy trwać : oddani i wierni pomimo licznych przeciwności losu. Nasza głęboka wiara umacnia kościół. Dziękuje Wam za to! Pragnę Was również poprosić o modlitwy w intencji wszystkich księży.Wasze modlitwy są nam bardzo potrzebne. Często chwalimy księży za rzeczy materialne; budowę kościołów , gromadzenie funduszy. Jest to ważne, ale nie najważniejsze. Módlcie się, abyśmy wytrwali przy Chrystusie, abyśmy wiernie mu służyli i oddawali należna cześć . Dziękuje za Wasze wsparcie i oddanie niezależnie od okoliczności. Jak mówi powiedzenie: „ żaden ksiądz nie idzie do nieba czy piekła samotnie”. Jezus jest światłem świata.!! Proszę, módlcie się za mnie i wszystkich księży Salezjanów pracujących w naszej parafii. Z Bożym błogosławieństwem !

Today we celebrate Catechetical Sunday! The 2018 theme is "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. A Catechist’s Prayer Father of all families, you have called me to serve the family in truth and love as a catechist. May I be faithful to this call, rooted in your Word, and open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May I use these gifts, especially the gifts of faith, hope, and love, to serve the family as a witness to you, who are love and life and the source and destiny of all families. Let your Spirit enlighten my mind and strengthen my heart so that I can be a path of Christ’s love to families, especially those in need, the homebound and aged, the disabled and disheartened. Through the intercession of Mary and Joseph, I pray for the Church, the Bride of Christ, whose mission to build a civilization of love passes through the family. Amen.
