The Bishops’ party will use the Children’s Chapel for vesting. A small hospitality (food and beverages) will be provided. Seating for Worshipers: Chairs will be added to the Nave of the church. The Parish Hall will be set up with chairs for overflow worshippers, with video/audio feed. Videographers will record the service. We hope to obtain Bishop Curry’s sermon in advance so it can be translated live into Spanish with headsets available. Receptions will follow the 8AM and 10AM Services on the Front Lawn with canopies.

On June 17th we at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas will be honored to have the Most Reverend Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, join us at our 8 AM and 10 AM services. He will be the first Presiding Bishop to visit Southwest Washington. We thought it would be appropriate to have the use of a special communal service for this visit.

The Reverend Herbert Beaver, the Anglican Communion's first clergyman in the Pacific Northwest,

served as Chaplain to the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Vancouver from 1836-1838. When Mr. Beaver came to be chaplain at Fort Vancouver, he brought with him from England a communion set made up of a Sheffield plate silver set consisting of a flagon (wine pitcher) used to store wine before it was consecrated; a goblet-shaped chalice; a paten used in the distribution of the unleavened bread, known as the host; and a ciborium. This set, known as the Beaver Collection, eventually was taken to Canada when the Hudson's Bay Company moved its headquarters from Fort Vancouver. For years they (the communion set and other articles) were kept at Christ Cathedral in Victoria, BC. Arrangements to loan them to the National Park Services, Fort Vancouver Historic Site, were a joint effort of David Hansen, the Historic Site's Curator, and St. Luke's Parish. On Sunday, June 29, 1980, the Communion set was used at St. Luke's Church.

The seal of the Hudson's Bay Company is engraved on each of the communion vessels. The engraving shows two stags bordering a shield; a fox rests upon the shield, centered in the engraving. On the shield is a cross and four beavers. The picture of the animals leaves little doubt as to the business of the Hudson's Bay Company. They were a trading company who came to the new world looking for animal pelts to satisfy the whims of their European customers. With appropriate permissions, an artist was commissioned to create exact replicas of the chalice and paten. These will be used by the Presiding Bishop during Communion on June 17th. With this, we are recognizing the ties our church, as well as our Diocese and National Church, have to the Anglican Communion worldwide. And we celebrate those ties that go back to 1836 at Fort Vancouver, over 182 years ago. Pat Lawless, Parish Archivist and Historian English articles continue on Page 10

FUENTES DE AGUA POTABLE San Lucas ~ St. Lukes tiene dos fuentes de agua potable que datan de la década de 1950, que ahora son difíciles de reparar y deben ser reemplazadas. Las nuevas fuentes de agua potable incluyen estaciones de llenado de botellas de agua, filtros y refrigeración para proporcionar agua limpia y fresca que eliminaría / reduciría el agua embotellada que Outreach actualmente proporciona. ACCIÓN DEL COMITÉ DE INMIGRACIÓN Después de los miembros de la votación, el Comité de Inmigración, donó $ 500 a Wilitha Andrews Jarju, un ex miembro de St. Luke's. El marido de Wilitha, Gibril, fue repentinamente arrestado y deportado en una semana. Gibril ha estado en los EE. UU. Durante décadas con una Visa con exceso de estadía. Él ha sido empleado, pagando impuestos y apoyando a su familia con 2 trabajos. Él ni siquiera tiene una multa de tránsito, pero fue arrestado antes de que la forma final, que ha sido enviada, fuera tratada por Inmigración para permitirle permanecer legalmente debido a su matrimonio con un ciudadano estadounidense. JUNIOR WARDEN REPORT The Presiding Bishop is coming! The Presiding Bishop is coming! This is probably the most exciting thing that’s ever happened at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas, certainly since I’ve been here. We fully intend to make a positive impression and that will start with making sure our buildings and grounds look their best. We’re developing a plan for two Saturday cleanups on June 9th and 16th. We will be replacing a few plants, mowing

THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO and trimming, dusting and polishing and even painting. I’m sure everyone that reads this has some skills and time to give for this important work. We may not be as fancy as the royal wedding was but we can wow him with how proud we are of SL2. Look for more details in early June. You may have read about how hard it is to find workers. That is what we’ve run into for the replacement of our Fourth Plain sign and the double doors next to the mailbox. Both contractors we’ve chosen have decided they can’t do the work so we’re back to square one. My goal is that both projects will be complete before fall. The “Education Wing”, built in 1955, has two ceramic drinking fountains that are over sixty years old. The one upstairs is cracked and continually drips and the one downstairs is not much better. We would like to replace both with modern units that also have spouts for filling bottles. In the big picture, ecologically, it is much better for us to refill our guest’s refillable bottles than it is to buy cases of bottled water to hand out. If you would like to contribute to this cause, drop a check in the plate on Sunday or in the office any other day and note “Drinking Fountains” on the memo line.

Pastoral Care: We hope to have the author of Holy Dying speak at a workshop here this fall. Bequests: Please consider wording your bequest to the parish to allow funding for property acquisition or major capital expenditures. Convalescence: Following his July 3 surgery, Fr. Audit: Errors found in our annual audit have been corrected. Vision & Mission: Estimated costs for our consultant are well below the budgeted amount. Stewardship: (1) Workdays are scheduled on June 9 and 16 to prepare for the Presiding Bishop’s visit on Father’s Day, June 17. (2) The Parish Hall will be set up with an audio and video feed for the expected overflow congregation. Outreach: (1) Checks were sent to a Philippine human-rights group and to a former parishioner whose husband was recently deported. (2) We now distribute clothing, food, and other items every weekday. (3) The women’s shelter is running smoothly.

pursuing my undergraduate degree at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. I graduated at the end of May with a Bachelor of Music degree in church music and organ performance. My time at St. Olaf has been challenging and fruitful, but I am now thrilled to be able to spend my time serving such a caring, compassionate, and motivated congregation. I grew up in the Episcopal Church and have spent most Sunday mornings since I was six years old singing in the choir. In my free time, I love to hike and explore, which is a big part of why I was originally drawn to this beautiful part of the country. I am also a planner and list-maker, so, for me, planning new adventures is half as much fun as taking them! I cannot fully express my excitement about connecting with this wonderful congregation and being involved in your ministry. Please stop by the office any time and introduce yourself—I’d love to chat with you and get to know you!

RECTOR'S ABSENCE I tried to delegate someone to have my surgery for me, but it didn't work. I will be going in for prostate surgery on July 3, and be "useless" for three weeks. I don't want to worry you too much: My dad and his dad both had prostate cancer. My dad is a 25 year survivor of his surgery, and is turning 89 this year. So I appreciate your prayers, and hope you will help see to the Parish while I am gone. I am so grateful to have Fr Dennis, Mother Amy and Arlen to help cover services while I am gone. The Rev. “GODLY PLAY” TRAINING OFFERED IN VANCOUVER! St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Vancouver is offering “Godly Play” training starting in the evening on Friday, August 10 from 5-9 PM and all day Saturday, August 11, 8:30 AM - 4 PM. The cost would be $100 per person or $500 for a group. If you want to take the training and will help in the Sunday School, St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas will pay the training fee. Please contact Fr. SAFEGUARDING TRAININGS St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas takes its responsibility for the safety of our people seriously. The Safe Church program teaches how to identify and prevent abuse within the church community, and is provided free of charge. The training consists of three sessions: Safeguarding God’s Children, Safeguarding God’s People and a new Anti-Racism program. All clergy members, and people in leadership (Vestry Members), all people who work directly with children, all Eucharistic Visitors and all paid staff in our congregation are required to take the appropriate training(s)*. WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP Our last meeting for our current book study, will be Saturday, June 9. We will first gather from 10AM to 12PM for our regular session then we will celebrate together the completion of this book with a pot luck salad luncheon until 1PM. As always, we begin with refreshments and friendly conversation then we will start our study and discussion based on our book, The Heartbeat of God – Finding the Sacred in the Middle of Everything” by Katherine Jefferts Schori. The pre-June reading assignment is found in Part Five: Healing Broken Connections; Go Forth for God; Fossils; A Moveable Feast, Healing Division; and Finding God in Dissent. PENTECOST LITURGICAL CHANGES When Pentecost comes we move to change our liturgical and musical practices to suit the season. At 10 AM service, the liturgy will change to the New Zealand texts, with variations on the Lord’s Prayer, Confession, Prayers of the People and the Eucharistic prayer. We will use the Immigrant’s Creed. The changes will be used through the end of July, to give us time to chew, digest and inwardly let the liturgy do its powerful work on our souls. At 8 AM we will be going to Rite II for the same period. I will miss the thee’s and thou’s, but they will be back. At 1 PM we will be going to an Enriching Our Worship Eucharistic prayer. The Rev. NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM Saxophonist and bass clarinetist David Evans will be our special guest with Mike Horsfall at the piano for Jazz Vespers on Saturday, June 2 at 6:00 PM. In New Orleans, David has performed or recorded with Pete Fountain, B. B. King, Johnny Mathis, Gladys Knight, The Four Tops, The Temptations and many others. Since coming to Portland he has played with the top jazz musicians in the Pacific Northwest and is an active soloist and teacher. Our own Mike Horsfall is in the Oregon Jazz Hall of Fame and Karen Burgess-Cassler will bring the message. Bring your friends, family, and neighbors! As announced last month, the TGIF Festival will move to July this year to avoid the August heat and expand to other musical genres in addition to the piano duet. Mark the four Fridays of July, the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th and expect some interesting music-making at 6 PM along with discounted dinner options following the concerts at local restaurants. This will be one of the more important events in our parish’s long history. June 17th will also mark the end of the choir and bellringing season. It’s time to pat a singer or ringer on the back and thank them for a job well done. After a well-deserved break, our summer choir will start informal rehearsals on Sunday mornings late in July. OUTREACH MEMORIES Juanita this month shares with us an incident which stands out to her. A guy came in to change out his worn-out jeans. He found rare slacks that fit, but meanwhile saw another guy who seemed to need them more, and so gave them up to him, and kept the old jeans instead. REQUEST FROM THE W.H.A.T. COMMITTEE Five women in our shelter may be transitioning to housing within the next few weeks. The W.H.A.T. Committee would like to give each a “Welcome Home” basket with some necessities to get them started. A basket labeled “W.H.A.T.” will be in the Narthex to accept donations of ONLY the following items: Paper goods: toilet paper, paper towels, napkins; Non-perishable food items: i.e. soup, macaroni and cheese (their food stamps may have run out); Toiletries, Shower curtains and rings, Set of bath towels, Kitchen towels, Small gift cards to Safeway, Target, Walmart

IMMIGRATION COMMITTEE ACTION After polling members, The Immigration Committee , donated $500 to Wilitha Andrews Jarju, a former member of St. Luke's. Wilitha's husband, Gibril was suddenly arrested and deported within a week. Gibril has been in the US for decades on an overstayed Visa. He has been employed, paying taxes and supporting his family with 2 jobs. He has not even a traffic ticket, but was arrested before the final form, which has been sent in, was dealt with by Immigration to allow him to stay legally due to his marriage to an American citizen. Now his family is dependent on others to support them, although Wilitha has started working. However, she is deaf and has a Down's Syndrome child, which limits her earning capacity. She needs money to pay the Immigration attorney. He apparently has a method to get Gibril back to the US within 2 years. Wilitha was thrilled to receive the money from SL2, which will help the family a lot.

DRINKING FOUNTAINS St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas has two drinking fountains that were put in when the education wing was built back in the 50’s. They have served well but now are hard to repair, can’t find parts, and look a little sad. There are newer and better drinking fountains that include water bottle filling stations, filters and refrigeration to provide good clean, cool the water. Outreach has been providing bottled water, at considerable expense and effort, for our daily guests.

With the bottle filling stations, the bottled water could be eliminated or reduced. Once our guests get into the habit of refilling their bottles there should also be less waste plastic on the streets. Each drinking fountain/bottle filler costs close to $1,500 to purchase. Donations for this project are now being accepted by the Treasurer. Just include the words “Drinking Fountains” on the memo line of your check or include this on a note. PEACE & JUSTICE FAIR Vancouver Peace & Justice Fair is September 8, again at Esther Short Park. This is our fifteenth anniversary, of the largest event of its kind in the entire Pacific Northwest. KIDS´ NIGHT OUT We now provide childcare at the Church from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for parents attending Friday Night Live! We will take little ones 0-3 years old in the nursery, and 310-year-olds in the Children’s chapel. We will provide food for the older ones, and games and entertainment. Donations are accepted, but not required. We do require a parent to complete a permission/information form before leaving your child with us. October 1-5, the Diocese of Olympia's Office of the Bishop is pleased to present "The Bishop's Leadership Conference: Size to Size - Strength to Strength" - a conference that explores what it means to be faithful, healthy, and effective in your church's current, local context and help you discern if God is calling your congregation to grow in new ways.

Over the course of the week, each church will attend two days of the conference. The first day, connect and network with other churches of similar size to share and discover strengths specific to your congregational size. On the second day, learn more about how growth would look by joining the next congregational size up. We'll be exploring how stewardship, marketing and evangelism, discipleship, communications, faith formation, finances, and property and building maintenance operates at all congregational sizes. The bishop is strongly encouraging all churches to send a team of clergy and lay leaders. So mark your calendars and save the date!

IMAGINING THE STORY St. Andrew's House, Union | July 22-27th | This weeklong course will offer a deep dive into what

it means to be creaturely. Visual and literary art tells the salvation story, helping us to stumble across it afresh, and inviting us to participate in it through our own art-making. The accommodation here is in traditional log cabin style set in the midst of stunning views. There are beautiful and calm gardens to explore for a multisensory experiences.
