“Little by little, from album to album, the Tenerife band are writing, in block letters, a chapter of Spanish music.”   La Vanguardia   “A convincing work- hypnotic and rich in nuances. The six "cuts" that freely walk around leaving nobody indifferent... one of the fundamental albums this year    Rock de Lux   “If I took acid - something I do not  do and what I would  deny anyway, I would doubtless opt for GAFs 4th  work just to see what happens.Once the album is over, you only wish you had not deactivated the replay mode so as to avoid having to return to this world and be able to remain there......stoned, happy, pure. Essentially, this is what art is all about, is it not? Not all the artists achieve it.But GAF does”   Mondo Sonoro   “They are furrowing across the most insurmountable limits of musical Zeitgeist in order to transmute a very powerful language - captivating as well as singular, a minority voice breaking through..”  El Destilador Cultural   “Truly marvelous- a guarantee that there is much more to Spanish music than the  all-time indie”   El Telescopio   “One of the best guarded secrets of the Spanish experimental rock”   El Giradiscos   "An UFO of the Spanish music...To be heard again and again...A voyage well-worth every minute of your time"    Bodyspace (Portugal)   “An incredible trip..a must psychodelia album”   The Sirens Sound (UK)   “One of the best albums in Spain this year”   Luís Lles, Diario del Alto Aragón   “A genuine marvel”   Rock en Canarias   “The best representative of the national experimental music”   El Día   “A fascinating journey”   El Diario de Avisos   “Each and every GAF and Estrella de la Muertes new  step  constitutes a rung of vertigo in a complex  sound spiral that is bedrock holding together this Tenerife band”   La Provincia   “Until the day before yesterday, one of the best guarded secrets of the Spanish experimental rock”   La Ventana Pop   “A personal and enigmatic work- one of those that you listen to once and never forget...Naturally and without imposing the songs , they conduce us to nooks and crannies only reachable by music”   Mindies   “A liquid magma wherein all the ingredients that have contributed to the identity of the project are blended and melted together to give rise to a magic potion of analgesic properties”   Playground Magazine   “One of the most fascinating and hard to define bands on the Spanish scene”   Zona Musical   “It is easier to experiment "Sunriser" than describe it. Brilliant”   Lagenda   “If there is anyone capable of proving wrong the equation of seemingly equating the Canary Islands with El Guincho, they are GAF and The Estrella de la Muerte”   Mondo Sonoro   “Armed with a formula consisting of a rich blend of avant-garde styles, this Canary band seem to possess the same powers of persuasion and convocation as the ancient shamans”   Alta Fidelidad   “An impeccable and well-groomed sound which is capable of creating an atmosphere embracing any situation” Treinta y Una Canciones   “The best national live”    Mizake Magazine   “To have this band on the peninsula is a luxury”    Fantastic Plastic Magazine   “A journey understood in its broadest connotations where one is driven from peaceful passages to electric sonic storms in few seconds and where the improvisation is combined with the melodic precision of pop songs, where everything is possible and where the surprise is a norm”    He Reunido a la Banda   “A band with an absolutely amazing and convincing live act, among the best in Spain”     Blas Fernández, Scanner FM   “GAF is one of those odd birds that multiplies itself and grows on the stage as no any other band in Spain”   Best National Act 2011 Go Mag

GAF Canary Islands psychedelia and experimentation

Regarding to the music, the European music press has associated them with space jazz, avantgarde, experimental, art-rock, psychedelic folk, Jazz-core or dreamtronica.  Nonetheless distancing itself from trendy tags, GAF could be defined as inhabiting several particular strains, but also joining a multiplicity of musical styles that are divergent and contained at the same time with psychedelia as its nexus and common denominator.

as wide-ranging as John Cage’s chance strategies, the repetition of Steve Reich, gamelan, field recordings, the open structures of Free Jazz. While at the same time it also applies Eno’s ambient theories, the stasis of drones, the experimental progressions of krautrock or No Wave crudeness; all of this filtered and modified in a manner that is closely indebted to electronic music but also with an expressivity common to pastoral folk and dream pop.

If we have to identify the motor of this process of stylistic de-virtualization, without question it is it’s own internal polarities.  Rather than allowing itself to settle into one mean of expression, GAF aims for a compositional mechanism that is open and nomadic.  This allows it to adapt to a growing field of sound which results from not only new technologies but also the continuous interaction between its group members and the plurality of perspectives and styles that it supposes.

Behind this peculiarity is the necessity to go beyond stylistic limitations imposed by the mainstream and its dominating genres.  But before anything else, the band is about opening fields of possibilities and experimenting freely with the elements of a plethora of styles.  Which is to say, with its textures, compositional structures and ambiance the band favors inter-stylistic combinations with strange and unforeseeable encounters.

Before molding itself to the patterns that have already been established by those prominent stylists, GAF chooses to explore stylistic elements

Gaf y La Estrella de la Muerte Sunriser (Foehn Records 2013)

GAF

Whoever has ever seen the Canary band GAF in action, will already have guessed that behind this name lurks one of the most fascinating and virtually impossible-to-define bands on the Spanish music scene. Positioned in a circle or in a line, as if they wanted to make it clear that theirs is more of a small -place orchestra than a rock-band, the musicians keep on exchanging instruments and shifting their respective positions as the concert goes on, and the intensity of the songs requires it. A journey understanding the word "journey" in its multiple accepted usages- in which one may jump from acoustic murmur to an electric storm in a question of seconds, and where alternate improvised passages with the precision of the melody of the pop songs, wherein anything is possible, and surprise is the norm.

It is a way of performing on the stage which perfectly embodies the changing and restless character of the project. From a project which features Kurajica Mladen as its sole fixed element, but which from a certain point may shrink to a duo format, or expand itself to reach the form of an authentic orchestra. Something which is also naturally reflected in the albums of the collective which has gone through changes of apparel  as the musicians kept coming and going: the psychedelia  has always been the guiding thread, but the robes which have adorned this psychedelia have undergone very different cuts. And if in "Sociedad Del Bienstar" (Society of Welfare) (Foehn,

2010) it was the right moment to cultivate the meditative ‘ragas’ as well as  the folk bordering on hallucination and the free jazz with unstructured breath, in “Gaf & The Love Supreme Arkestra" (Foehn 2010,) with the obvious bow to a Sun Ra concealed in the very title, the adornments pointed to cosmic jazz and a sort of primitive space rock - which  excelled in the spectacular "Shine", one of the bands best tracks. A temporary turn  which in "Gaf y La Estrella De  La  Muerte" (Foehn 2011) prompted the Canary collective to construct their own vision of the acid rock of the 70s and the more exploratory version of ‘kosmische’ sound, again with spectacular results, which in "Sunrise" finally conduced them towards the waters of the best space rock, cultivated at the end of 80s and during the 90s by bands such as Spacemen 3 and Loop as well as Flying Saucer Attack, the Telescopes, Fuxa or the first editions of Mercury Rev.

"Sunriser" opens up with "Balayo", a song sustained by a..swooning.cadence and a melody of the organ of the  liturgical  type , which serves to mark the overall tone of the album. A piece of frontier gospel (the warm vocal line and a trumpet which smells of Morricone, have a lot to do with this) that is burning itself out little by little, charred by a sea of drones and static electricity that is a buzz in the background. A spirituality of cosmic timbres which stands out in "Sunday" - a peculiar approximation to spell-bound dominions of Sonic Boom that allows itself being caressed  by a happy air of "House of a Thousand Chandeliers" and  yields to the startling epic of the very cinematographic  "Oyalab". And all this happens only on the "firont side"- and I say the front side because "Sunriser" is an album conceived in a vinyl mentalityand the other side is exclusively reserved to "Yannakis"- a floating pocket symphony   full of light and left at the mercy of the drone waves and the mattresses of the cosmic air. A dense psychedelic broth from which little by little emerge hallucinating voices, trumpets of the phantasmal air, guitars that appear in a liquid state and all manner of electronic arrangements - the specific universe of GAF, summed up in twenty minutes of pure electr nic bliss. But the matter does not end there because the digital discharge and the compact version add to the feast of "DA 14"  an amazing ambient touch  improvised in the studio in conjunction with David Cordero,  that suits to perfection  the best recorded Canary album to date.
