Principal’s Message – February 2018 I come to work every day thinking this is “The Greatest Show on Earth.” There is so much going on, there is so much excitement, and watching the students magically transform into our future leaders is gratifying. The magic is that we have something for everyone. Whether a student is interested in science, engineering, robotics, athletics, dance, drama, computers - you name it, we got it. And if we don’t have it, we will get it. The “Fun” takes place from 7:30 in the morning to 6:00 in the evening when the LEAP buses depart. Sanger High School Online Registration 2018-2019 School Year Sanger High is excited to announce it will be shifting to 100% online registration for next school year. The registration process will be online through PowerSchool. Details will be sent home beginning in February. Pathways Sanger High is pleased to announce the addition of a Health Science Pathway. This brings the total pathway offerings to five, including: Wonderful Ag Prep, PTLW Engineering, Education, Digital Arts and Media, and now Health Science. Each of these pathways are four-year, and include a variety of opportunities to support student’s interests. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Kirstin Coronado at [email protected] Registration for 9th, 10th & 11th Grades Counselors will visit classrooms the week of January 29th-February 2nd to present registration materials for classes for the 2018-2019 school year. All 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will receive a registration form and course of study handbook to help them choose their courses for next year. Counselors will meet with students and collect the registration forms between February 5th and February 16th. Students will also indicate if they want to take summer school courses on their registration form. Parents - please review these materials with your son/daughter and sign their registration form. Local Scholarships for Seniors The local scholarship applications were made available to seniors the week of January 16th in their American Government or Economics class. The application deadline is February 28th by 3:30pm No late applications will be accepted. Applications are to be turned in to the guidance office. Several scholarships will be given through our local scholarship program from school clubs, local community organizations, local businesses, and citizens. All seniors are encouraged to apply if they have at least an overall 2.0 grade point average. Students must use a computer to complete their application. (No handwritten applications will be accepted.) This plan determines what needs the school has that must be funded. Sanger High School will be hosting a parent night to share how it is allocating its funds to benefit all students. Junior Parent Night The junior parent night will be Monday, February 5th at 6:00pm in the MPR for English and in the Band Room for Spanish. Dress Code Enforcement Sanger High School observes and enforces the Sanger Unified board approved dress code. Please take time to remind your student that he/she will be cited if found to be in violation of the established dress code. The following bullets reflect some of the most common violations on campus: • Facial piercings are not allowed • Baseball caps must have a Sanger High logo • Hair color must be a natural hair color (no bright red, pink, blue, green) The complete dress code and consequences for violations are listed in the student/parent handbook, which students received at their registration earlier this school year. The handbook is also available for viewing on the Sanger High School website. College and Career Fair The Sanger High School College and Career Fair will be held April 27th from 8:00am-12:00pm in the large gym. 11th and 12th grade students will have the opportunity to explore different universities and community colleges while also finding out about career opportunities. If you are interested in learning about the Mexican Culture and Dance come join us. Practices will be Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 3:15 to 5:30 pm. Café Con Ponce We are pleased to say our parent engagement activities at Sanger High School continue to gain momentum. Last semester we had our first Hmong Community Engagement presentation. Mr. Brandon Vang was the keynote speaker and Mrs. Collison was the night facilitator. The event was conducted in the Hmong Language. We had an amazing turn out which included over 100 families. Cafe con Dr. Ponce is held every first Tuesday of the month. These Cafe's are held in Spanish. During the Cafe's our parents have opportunities to engage with school personnel. Mr. Chacon has been an instrumental part in ensuring the parents feel welcomed at Sanger High. The parents recently engaged in a conversation surrounding academic discourse. The parents got an opportunity to observe several classrooms to experience what their children experience on a daily basis here at Sanger High School. We continue to close the gap between the daily functions of the school and what parents know. College Knowledge Academy is scheduled to begin this spring semester. Our parents will have an opportunity to learn about the education system and strategies to send their children to the best colleges and universities available to them. Sanger High School Prom May 12, 2018 Sanger High School Dress Code and Regulations *School administration will be following the guidelines as outlined in your parent/student handbook. Generally, in regards to dress code, our policy is “moderation in all things.” Any apparel, hairstyle, cosmetic or jewelry (even if not specifically mentioned below) which creates a safety concern or draws undue attention to the wearer will be prohibited. *Dresses, skirts, and slits in dresses or skirts, should be no shorter than 6 inches above the knee. Any “seethrough” clothing or clothes that expose the body in a sexually suggestive manner are not acceptable. This includes bare midriff (front, sides or back). Dresses should cover up to the “underarm area” all the way around. Spaghetti straps and strapless will be permitted as long as they meet the above requirements. No facial piercings or unnatural hair color. *Dancing known as “freaking” is also prohibited. Students will receive one warning, and if it continues, they will be escorted out. *Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA on the most recent semester or 12-week progress report and cannot be on the non-privilege list. Students must also clear any fees or fines owed, and submit a signed Dance Contract. *Sanger High School’s Resource Officer will be present as will school administrators to provide supervision and ensure the safety of all guests. A breath analyzer machine will be available to assess any guest who is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. *Dance contracts must be signed by students and parents prior to purchasing tickets.
