Preschool Screening-Monday, March 31 PRESCHOOL SCREENING If your child will be four years old on or before September 15, 2014 they are invited to take part in all district kindergarten screening on Monday, March 31 from Noon to 6:00PM. This will take place at all Council Bluffs Elementary Schools except Walnut Grove, Lewis and Clark and Crescent. No appointment is necessary. Parents do need to bring the child, birth certificate, immunizations, and proof of income for the last 12 months or their last income tax return.

Boys and Girls Club: Camp Nakomis! Registration is now open for this summer. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands' Camp Nakomis is Located on 35 wooded acres in Carter Lake, IA. Miles of hiking trails, numerous camp sites and a fishing dock give campers countless opportunities to enjoy themselves, all in a safe and positive environment. Camp

Need some age-appropriate book suggestions or rainy day activities? The materials here are your answer—all of them created by experts to be fun, educational, and easy to use outside of school. The link is above and here is one example of the fun you can have learning with your child. Make a Mystery Puzzle– 5th Grade. No reading list is complete without a good mystery. Even the least enthusiastic readers can get caught up in following their favorite sleuths from caper to caper. This activity, which can be used with a book club, has children and teens explore this popular type of writing in more detail by making a puzzle. It also encourages them to invent and write their own mysteries. It’s elementary, Watson—mysteries are fun! Here is another one for Kindergarten Age students using the book, Madeline. 1.

Familiarize yourself with the interactive Construct-a-Word tool.

2. Before reading, ask the child to help you create some pairs of words that rhyme. Consider using words like—bake and cake or rug and bug. Remind the child to listen for rhyming words are you read together. 3. Read aloud the picture book Madeline. Find Madeline at your local library or online at www.wegivebooks.org. Create a free account by clicking “Join” at the top of the homepage. Once logged in, click “Read” in the top header and then search for the title you’d like to read online. 4. After reading, flip through the pages again and invite the child to help you pick out pairs of rhyming words. The first pair in the book is vines and lines. 5. Open the interactive Construct-a-Word tool. The tool will ask the child’s first name and then give a choice of nine different word endings.
