From the Rector Dear St. Andrew’s family, As I write this May letter to you, the temperatures are going from the 70’s one day to above 100 the next. It would seem that the weather (especially in Arizona) reflects the vicissitudes of life in these unstable times. Just as we don’t quite know what clothes we’ll need from one day to the next because of the randomness of the weather, the sudden changes in our lives brought about by the economy in general, and particularly by cutbacks at work --- or outright loss of employment --- have people looking around for answers……….often, it seems without a clear sense of just what all the questions really are. Every Sunday we pray for all those who have had reductions in work or loss of employment, in addition to those seeking healing of body, mind or spirit. I invite you to join us also on Wednesday evenings, whether you seek guidance and healing or yourself, or for a friend or family member. As we are anointed for the healing we seek for ourselves and others, let us ask the Holy Spirit to give us the insight to be better instruments of healing in the world and to give us the strength and courage to carry out that ministry in these difficult times. We are a family of Christ. Now, more than ever before, we must live out the faith we profess in our worship, and we must do it as a family. To that end, we must come together in the name of Jesus Christ to discern His will for us and to be strengthened by the Eucharist, as we are guided and inspired by the Holy Spirit. May the blessings we each receive be a sharing in the healing each of us needs to be able to bring healing and comfort to others. Your sister in Christ, Melinda+

************* Pentecost: The Sunday fifty days after Easter on which the church remembers the bestowal of the gift of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles (Acs 2:1). The name derives from the Greek name of the Jewish Festival of Weeks fifty days after Passover, when the event originally occurred. Because this event signaled the beginning of the apostles’; public proclamation of Jesus as the Christ, it is often called the birthday of the Christian church. Because it is also the traditional day for Baptisms, and because people at one time uniformly wore white garments in which to be baptized, the day also became known as Whitsunday (White Sunday). Now the color of the day is rd, followed by white for Trinity Sunday; the rest of the season is green, except that in some places the Last Sunday of Pentecost is red or white.

Season of Pentecost: The season of the church year which funs from the Sunday of Pentecost until the First Sunday of Advent; is this season, Sundays are numbered after Pentecost. The cycle of the liturgical year from Advent through Easter recalls Jesus’ earthly ministry, culminating in the remembrance of his death, resurrection, and the post resurrection appearances. The Pentecost season calls us to explore the significance of the church itself as the sign of Christ’s continued presence and ongoing activity in the world. The liturgical color is green.

May 2009 Candidate Report to the Parish It is good to be home! My year at the Seminary of the Southwest went by more quickly than I would have thought possible, wrapping up almost four years to the day after having been granted Postulant status in 2005. It was an intense but very rewarding year of learning, gaining perspective, and being able to focus on those things critical to ministry, however that may unfold. I was blessed with a remarkable combination of teachers, mentors, and fellow students with whom I became close friends – in many ways forming an extended family that I will long remember. Barbara joined me for my last week in Austin before returning home to Arizona – a week of ceremony and celebration with family and friends. Commencement took place on May 12, with our mutual friend The Reverend Canon Chuck Robertson, now Canon to the Presiding Bishop, delivering the commencement address and conferring my diploma. With diploma in hand and goodbyes said, it was time to head back home. As I write this, we’ve been home just a few days and are gearing up for the next round of activities. Everything is on track, God willing, for ordination to the Transitional Diaconate at Trinity Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. Saturday June 6 with several other candidates. I hope many of you will be able to attend, and I look forward to seeing you there. Now I am in the midst of preparations and paperwork for both ordination and Clinical Pastoral Education at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center that will follow immediately thereafter. …so much for a “summer break” after the year in school. Where do I expect to serve during my time as a Deacon? Nothing has changed in that regard since my March newsletter article. I do not expect to be assigned until after completing CPE in August, given the on-call nights and weekends that will be part of CPE. It would still be premature for me to speculate on where the Bishop will place me or for how long once CPE has been completed. Following CPE, I will have to prepare for and take the General Ordination Exams (GOEs) as part of the demonstration of competencies required for subsequent ordination to the priesthood. The schedule and logistics for that have yet to be developed. Right now, my focus is on getting through the two-and-a-half months of CPE; and then taking it one step at a time from there!

I look forward to having the opportunity to be among you on at least an occasional basis as the summer unfolds, and will keep you posted on developments as they occur. This journey has been full of surprises, and I don’t expect them to slow down as it continues. Greetings from the Senior Warden Janet Beason, Senior Warden [email protected] Many of us attended a Participatory Strategic Planning Workshop with Canon Timothy Dombek from the Diocesan Office. This workshop focused on how we at St. Andrew’s can increase attendance, discipleship, stewardship and our outreach and ministry to the surrounding community. The workshop was a total of 25 hours spread over 4 days. It was fun, difficult, reflective and hopeful. Canon Dombek was a dynamic facilitator, who kept us on task. This Participatory Strategic Planning Workshop is just the 1st step of our work to revitalize our church. Every member of St. Andrew’s will be asked to participate in some way or another. The following are the Three Strategic Goals, committees to reach those goals and the committee coordinator as determined by the workshop participants: Discerning and Articulating a God-Given Vision for St. Andrew’s 1. Your Maestro will provide special musical guests when possible to fill in this gap until the choir returns to the loft in September. This was a most challenging season with learning several new songs written and arranged by your Minister of Music and performed by the Chancel Choir and we hope that these were inspirational to all. I wish to thank each and every choir member for all their dedicated rehearsal hours and also all other soloists who have musically contributed to St. Andrew's because without their support and dedication, none of this would be possible. Please have a safe and wonderful summer season and I'll leave you on how the Greeks perceived music: Music is the study of invisible relationships between internal objects.

Christian Education Lori Cooper The kids had a fun time hunting for eggs on Easter, thanks to the generosity of all who donated candy and plastic eggs. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! Our Sunday School year has now ended with much reluctance from the kids. They have enjoyed coming and participating in all that we have done and taught them. They are all talking about VBS and can’t wait to attend. I want to thank all the teachers for a wonderful job they have done and they are: Kiki and Gina (preschool-Kinder), Lori (1st, 2nd, 3rd), Joyce (4th, 5th, 6th) , Elena and Peter (7th, 8th st st and helped in HS ), Bola (High School), Dulce (1 Communion), and Miguel (1 Communion). The kids and teachers will receive awards on May 17. 2009. This year we have one High School Graduate, Krysten Willie. Congratulations!!! Vacation Bible School starts June 1st. If you have any questions or want to volunteer, please see Kiki.

Altar Guild Corrina Willie For the summer months the altar guild members will still be on a 3 service schedule. This should make it easier, as we are use to setting up for three services. Members please remember that you signed up for the summer schedule. The schedule is out and your copy is in the church sacristy. Please make arrangements if you are unable to serve. In May the members of the Altar Guild and teachers were invited to Melinda’s home for a special luncheon in recognition of our dedicated service to the church. Several members were able to attend. Later in June we look forward to having Bishop Smith lead service in our church. It will be wonderful to have him here at St. Andrew’s Church again. Thank you to all members for your continued service every Sunday and Wednesday with setting up and helping one another, even if you aren’t scheduled to serve, and for helping out with cleaning days and special services. We want to extend a special thank you to Ruthann for her wonderful talent in decorating the altar with a beautiful display of flowers every Sunday. In closing, we would like to encourage new members to join our altar guild committee. Have a wonderful summer everyone.

Pastoral Care Connie Kentfield Recently, Melinda presented me with a certificate from the Diocese stating that the Bishop has granted me license as a Pastoral Care Leader to serve St. Andrew’s. This was an exciting and humbling event. St. Paul calls us all to use our gifts to serve Christ and bring his love to others. I am eager to do this in our Parish. Since this is something new for us here’s some questions that have been asked and the answers. Q. What is a Licensed Lay Pastoral Care Leader (LLPCL)? A. The Diocese has definite definitions for this ministry. They are: • A representative of the Church • One who carries the care of the Church to others • A Christ-bearer used by God to connect those we visit with the larger Body of Christ • A ministry of presence–sharing God’s love and the community’s concern • A ministry of healing–an assurance of God’s presence • A ministry of hope–a tangible symbol or God’s love An LLPCL will visit the sick at home or in the hospital for prayer and to let them know that they are not alone. And to bring communion to those who are not able to attend church. (Bill Fellows has been doing this so lovingly for many years, but is now ready to pass it on. He has asked me to include it in the Pastoral Care ministry.) They are there for care during times of significant life changes. Each Leader works under the supervision of the parish priest and there are ethical standards set by the Diocese. Q. How are you qualified to do this? A. I attended a workshop at the recent Diocese Ministry Fair and learned what is involved and received the application forms. These asked my education and experience–some of which is 4 years Education for Ministry (EFM), volunteer Hospital Chaplain, and various services for St. Andrew’s. Melinda also had paperwork to submit about me. The Bishop reviewed all and granted a license through the end of this year. In November there will be more paperwork and if approved a 3 year license will be granted. It is so easy to let our every day life become kind of ho hum and this includes our spiritual life. We can add a little zest (or salt) by some simple service to others and I have several ideas/plans for us. Some can be done in the privacy of your own home. And all will be painless–who knows you may even have fun and smile. God has blessed each of us and when we share these blessings and love we receive so much more than we give. Watch for “We Care for Each Other” in the newsletter or Bulletin. Remember, each day is a present. Open it with thanks to God each morning.

Users / Greeters John Schartow My big appreciation goes to the greeters and ushers who show up week after week with friendly smiles for those who enter our church. If you are tired of seeing the same greeters every week, volunteer! This is the easiest job in the church and one of the most important. New people aren't properly greeted unless at least six people speak to them, ask them to coffee hour, find out where they are from, the neighborhood or just visiting, when the were paroled. Show interest in them. We hope that they will come back.

Finance Committee Do you spend money for St. Andrew’s? Do you buy light bulbs or toilet paper or flowers or other things that we need? If you do, please make sure that you do a couple of things, so that we make sure we get you reimbursed properly, and that we use our limited funds wisely. First, seek out the person in charge of the funds that cover what you are needing to buy. If you don’t know who that is, you can ask Janet Beason our Senior Warden, or Karen Butler our Treasurer and they can point you in the right direction. Make sure that you coordinate spending money with this person. Secondly, once you have made the purchase, fill out a reimbursement voucher that you can obtain from the church, and submit it, with receipts, to Karen Butler. This insures we keep proper records and get you reimbursed in the shortest time possible Thank you for the work you do, Jary Engels, Finance Committee Chair

Landscaping Fund It’s hot and the grass needs mowing. As of the first of the year, the money that we had available for hiring professional landscapers (money from the concession stand we ran at the Cardinals home games) was no longer available (we are not going to run the stand any more). So to be able to continue this service, we started a special LANDSCAPING FUND for extra donations to be able to keep this service. As of this writing, we have enough money to continue this service through the end of June. If 30 families would donate 10 dollars extra every month to this fund, we would have the cost of the service paid for. We have been focusing on renewal and mission and there is much work to do. Please consider donating to this fund, so that we can focus our limited resources on our mission, rather than burning out mowing the lawn. Please make checks with a note to LANDSCAPING FUND, or if in cash, put in an envelope with the same notation and put your offering envelope on it. Thank you for you consideration.

Feed the Homeless Ruthann Stark We are winding up the season of feedings ad the last date, in June will be covered by the Red Hat Ladies. As usual, we take a break over the summer months because not everyone will be around. The schedule will resume with a date in mid-October. In April, we served chili as a main course, and it was well liked by all. This month, it was hot dogs and beans, but such hot dogs! We had all the fixin’s, not just ketchup, mustard and relish, but chili, copped onions, sauerkraut and hot sauce. Plus the vegetarian menu we try to provide, veg dogs and beg beans. And we had extra donations of clothes, shoes and reading material. As summer rolls on, please keep in mind those less fortunate that we reach out to. In the fall, we’ll take our outgrown / unused clothes and shoes, paperback books and magazines, children’s books and clothes, blankets, winter coats – you all not the list by now. Ask me, Meg Dunn or Steve Sharley if you aren’t sure what we can use. Hope you all have a safe summer and we’ll be cooking again in the fall!

Hospitality Committee Ted Warlick Your Hospitality Team has been formed and our first project was the Mother's Day Celebration. What a great day we had celebrating. The women of the church at the 9:15 AM service sang a special Mother's Day song: “O My Momma”. The memorial table honoring our mothers both past and present was very inspiring. We welcomed all to celebrate a Mother's Day Breakfast Brunch in the parish hall. We had great food and even better fellowship. Many, many thanks to the following people who made this possible. Caught in the Net Just odds and ends of random thoughts from an Anonymous Fisherman. Who am I? Who are you? Sometimes it seems we go through life not really knowing. We’re someone’s daughter/son, father/mother, wife/husband. Maybe we’re a teacher, doctor, nurse, lawyer, policeman. Maybe we’ve got letters after our name to further identify us or show the education we have. It’s so easy for any of that to become our identity and if it goes away we feel we’re no one and we have nothing. Some times we have to step aside from what we have clung to for so long–a change in location, job, or health can make us look again at who we are. It’s tough to let go and so often we go kicking and screaming afraid of dropping into oblivion with our identity gone. But who are we really? We are wonderful children of God. Heirs to His kingdom. He has given us so much and will continue to give to us. A full measure tamped down and running over. So next time I look in the mirror I will remember that I’m seeing a beloved child of God. The other stuff doesn’t make me and doesn’t matter. Jesus said “Love the Lord God with all your heart and all your soul and all your might.” I can do that from any location, job, or in any health and that’s who I am. How about you? Cast your net wide with love and faith.

Wednesday Evening Eucharist Ruthann Stark I would like to encourage everyone to come to our Wednesday night Eucharist, at least once, to see what it is all about. Sometimes your spirit needs that little boost mid-week, or you need the comfort of your church, and you know where to come. We start at 6 PM, more or less, and have our church service first. It's an abbreviated Rite 2 service, sometimes we take turns reading the Gospel, and then it's either a brief sermon, or a lesson on an important person in the church history that is honored that day. We do the communion around the altar, person to person, like Jesus and his disciples did. And we take turns serving, too---why do you think I'm not afraid to get up there and assist at the 8AM service if Melinda asks? We've learned a lot about the church, the mass, and the people we serve. Then it's over to the hall, after we clean up and lock up, for a pot-luck and a lesson. It is always interesting to see what we have to eat. Once it was really all desserts--pie, cake and ice cream--and sometimes it is all main-dish items--pizza and fried chicken, salad and cheesy rice. Then comes the lesson. This year we have been studying the "Bible for Dummies" and what a great book that is. There is always something new to learn, no matter how well you think you know your Bible. We have some pretty interesting discussions, too. So please, come and join us, at least once. It is too hot to be outside but we have the AC on and there is not much good on TV anyhow. You'll still be home in time for the news!

Teddy Bear Ministry John Schartow The congregation contributed 101 bunnies and other assorted stuffed huggable animals. They were gratefully received by the Tolleson Police Department. They love to receive our donations because they can do so much good with them. Thanks to all who donated to our "Bunny Drive." Keep the Teddy Bears coming. They are needed all year. This is one outreach that gets immediate results. Remember, "If you give a man fish, you feed him for a day. If you give a child a Teddy Bear or bunny, he (or she) can hug for years."

Scrapbook Club Barbara Fabre If you are a scrapbooker and not coming to the Saturday Croppings, you are missing a lot of fun and sharing of ideas. Our group is open to any scrapbooker or perspective scrapbooker. The dates for our up-coming Saturdays are June 27th, July 25th and August 22nd. We meet in the south end of the parish hall at 9:00 AM and scrap until 6:00 PM and usually go out to dinner after we clean up, but you are welcome to come a share any part of this time with us. “Ladies” of Les Chapeaux Rouges Barbara Fabre Summer is upon us, at least according to the thermometer, and it’s time to start planning our indoor activities. Thus far we have only two things on our calendar, so we need to get together for one of our th quarterly idea get-togethers. I’ve scheduled this get together for Sunday June 28 after the 9:15 service. We are going to help Steve Sharley feed the homeless on Sunday June 21st. We will meet at the church wearing our Red Hat casual clothes without hats to carpool to the shelter. The time will be announced as soon as it’s known to me. After church on the 21st we will load all our donated clothes in cars to make leaving later in the day easier. th

September 28 – October 2 is our Red Hat Sailabration/ Mini Convention at Sea. We sail from Long Beach on Monday at 5:00 PM, arrive at Catalina Island at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, leave Catalina at 5:00 PM, arrive at Ensenada Mexico at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, leave at 10:00 PM, Thursday will be a RED HAT DAY AT SEA and we’ll get back into Long Beach on Friday at 8:00 AM. Sounds like tons of fun! The time and place to meet our bus to and from Arizona have yet to be determined. Dress for the cruise is a mixture of Red Hat casual to Red Hat schmaltzy. Now is the time to get yourselves organized ladies. I’m hoping that this will be only the first of many cruises to come! June 14th is our belated Mother’s Day celebration at Lady Lois’ home. We’ll have a Mother’s Day cake and ice cream, play Mother’s Day games with prizes and watch a comedy about us “perfect” mothers. Don’t worry about wearing your jammies. Just wear your Red Hat casual, comfy clothes. Bring a small wrapped gift to give to another blessed mother (less than $10.00). Oh yes, time will be our usual Movie Nite time of 6:30 PM. Remember to mark your calendars with the above dates and bring in all your unwanted and out-grown clothes and any unwanted books/magazines to support our clothes drive! Cans for Christ Joyce Fields The Tuesday Morning Women's Bible Group/Tuesday Morning Cusillo Group is collecting aluminum cans for recycling. A can is in the Parish Hall for them or if you have a large bag give them to Joyce Fields. Proceeds will go to the St. Andrew's General Fund. Besides the money raised, this is a "Green Project" to help protect God's earth. Please NO TRASH and watch your children so they don't put trash in as this contaminates the whole collection.

1st Sunday Food Box Betty and Max Klass The first Sunday of every month we collect canned good and non-perishable breakfast food items that go to the William C. Jack Elementary School in the Glendale Elementary School District to feed kids that come to school without breakfast and to help families that are in need of food. Any food not used is contributed to a Food Bank

Joyce Fields A special thank you to all the people of St Andrew’s who have donated labels for the Labels for Education Program we have over 2000 points accumulated at this time. Following are the eligible products and the point value for the labels. Products worth 5 points are: Campbell’s Condensed 10-12 oz Soups, Campbell’s Chunky Soups and Chili (bowls), Spaghettios (15 & 14.75 oz), Campbell’s Soup at Hand, Campbell’s Supper Bakes, Campbell’s Select Soups (bowls), Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Crackers. V8 Splash juice drinks and smoothies. Products worth 1 point: Campbell’s Bean Products, 10 oz soups, low-sodium soups, fat free soups, kitchen classic soups, tomato juices, gravies, Healthy Request Soups, Select soups; Franco American Gravies, Swanson’s broth and canned chicken, Prego Pasta Sauces, V8 100% Vegetable Juice and V8 Fusion Juice (lid), Pepperidge Farms Soups, breads, croutons, rolls, stuffing, cookies, crackers, Goldfish cookies and snack mixes, Frozen Garlic Breads, cakes, turnovers, dumplings and puff pastry. We are counting and sending them in and then the Sunday school will be able to get something special. For those of you collecting the Campbells Labels for the Childrens Ministry please keep them coming. For most labels you now only need to save the bar code. Newsletter Articles Lois Crosland If you have anything that you would like to share with others in our newsletter please send it to Lois Crosland via email: [email protected] or give it to her at Church on Sunday morning. The deadline for contributions for the August / September Facts from the Fisherman will be, Saturday, July 25, 2009. The newsletter has gone “green” and will be sent out via email to all the parishioners that we have email addresses for as well as sent to the other churches in the diocese. Printed copies will be made available for those who don’t have email to pick up at church on Sunday and only minimal copies will be sent out via U.S. Mail. This process will save the parish approximately $80-$90 in paper, ink and postage each time the newsletter is published.

Clothes Drive Before you go out this summer and look for some new clothes to replace those you’re tired of or out-grown…Clean out your closets and bring them down to St. Andrew’s. The Red Hat ladies are gathering clothes to take down to the homeless shelter on the 21st of June. We’re collecting clean, wearable clothes of any size and either gender. Look for the playpen in the parish hall to deposit your donations. If you’d like a letter for your taxes, please contact Barbara.
