Crystal Commendation – Parent Involvement and Volunteer Program Overview Three years ago, when the district implemented its strategic five-year plan, EVERYchild 2020, it included commitments to creating a culture of high community engagement and to involving families as partners in their students’ success. Both those commitments required expanding volunteer opportunities, increasing the number of parents, guardians and community members who are involved in our schools and both strengthening and expanding the number of parent organizations. With those commitments in mind, each year our goal is to increase the number of parents, guardians, and community members who apply to be volunteers in our learning community. We also seek to increase the total hours of time and effort that they give to our scholars. Toward that goal, we wanted to make it easier and more convenient for parents and community members to volunteer by switching from a paper to online application system. That change has reduced the average amount of time it takes to vet parents and community members through our background check from two weeks to one day. In addition, that online application system is easily found on both district and campus websites. In addition, Parent Involvement Liaisons at the elementary and middle school levels play an important role in the program by keeping both school employees and parents focused on ways they can collaborate to benefit students. We strengthened this position by providing stipends to the liaisons. Their hands-on commitment to the work on the campuses has proved to be invaluable to the success of the program as they actively seek volunteers, steer them toward the online application and help coordinate engagement opportunities on their campus. This information is shared during Meet the Teacher and Open House events at the beginning of each school year and as new families enter the school. Some examples of volunteerism include assisting in the workroom or library, monitoring the halls, serving on the PTA/PTO, serving as mentors or tutors and reading to students. The campus engagement opportunities are also shared among the parent liaisons to encourage best practices across the district. At the end of the school year, we host a volunteer appreciation event where we recognize and reward our volunteers for their outstanding work and invaluable contributions to the success of our students and schools, including a special award to the Outstanding Parent Volunteer at each level. Awards are also presented to campuses that accumulate the most volunteer hours. In addition, we recognize our Parent Involvement Liaisons for the role they played throughout the school year as we bring the year to a close. Results Our 2017-18 school year showed significant gains in our targeted areas. We successfully increased our total number of volunteer hours from 59,149 hours for the 2016-17 school year to 63,038 hours for the 2017-18 school year. This did not include hours that were dedicated to recovery efforts from Hurricane Harvey, which were substantial. In addition, the number of parent organizations, including PTOs, PTAs and booster clubs increased from 49 to 65.

Engaging the Community Partnerships for Success Parent Involvement Opportunities

Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS)

Numerous and varied opportunities are available for parent involvement, including parent education classes, parent workshops and membership on committees within the Parent Advisory Council (PAC).

The Volunteers In Public Schools program provides opportunities for service organizations, businesses, community members, senior citizens, parents and students to volunteer. Areas of need include classroom reading, career presentations, mentoring, hall monitoring, copying and filing.

SMART START A home-based school readiness program called SMART START helps parents in their own homes learn how to be their child’s first teacher. Home instructors visit participating parents and children weekly in their homes throughout the school year to teach parents how to support their child’s development. The SMART START program is open to any family in the district that has children from 18 months to four years of age.

PTOs and Booster Clubs Parent and teacher organizations and booster clubs offer families a variety of opportunities for involvement in their children’s schools. We encourage you to join one of these organizations. Your help can make a big difference in the success of your child and other students, while offering you the opportunity to connect with other parents. To join and get more involved, contact your school’s principal.

Spring Forward: Supporting Our Students This mentor program is designed to empower preteen and teenage students to make positive life choices that will help them maximize their personal and academic potential. Volunteers who are interested in serving as mentors are asked to commit to the program for at least one full year.

Safe and Secure Learning Visitors Welcome; Check In Required

Police Department

Because safety and security are our highest priority, all visitors are required to check in at the school’s front desk where they are routinely asked to submit their driver’s license or photo identification for scanning. Once the license has been scanned, a name tag is printed and must be worn by visitors while they are on campus. Upon leaving the campus, visitors are asked to stop by the front desk and check out.

The Spring ISD Police Department operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with the help of 62 full-time police officers, up to 15 auxiliary officers and a K-9 search dog. Officer assignments include secondary campuses, 47 patrol units, a gang suppression unit, special response team, truancy and investigations. Campus activity is monitored by over 1,600 cameras with 24-hour access.

Truancy Intervention Program A progressive truancy intervention program identifies and supports students in kindergarten through 12th grade who are at risk of not meeting attendance requirements.
