In 1519, a hundred years before the 1620 landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, Spain began to explore and conquer Mexico. The road the Spaniards took from the Mexican port city of Veracruz, up to Mexico City, through the silver mining town of Zacatecas and north into what is now New Mexico and Santa Fe became known as El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, “The Royal Road of the Interior Land.” Coronado followed this trail in 1540 as he explored the land north into Kansas and Colorado. El Camino Real ran more than 1,500 miles and connected with the new frontiers of America.

HISTORY
In 1821, William Becknell started from Franklin, Missouri and began the trek to the south and west toward Santa Fe. What became the Santa Fe Trail ran for 900 miles between Missouri and what is now New Mexico. The two roads met and the route became international commercial highways used by Mexican and American traders. From the days of cattle drives and the Santa Fe Trail drovers, our community has been connected to vaqueros and Mexican traders. Stories of Mexican treasure have been entwined with the lore of Dodge City from its earliest days. Early Dodge City founder, Robert M. Wright told the tale of a Mexican trading group who was attacked by Indians and who buried $20,000 in Mexican silver somewhere along the banks of the Arkansas River west of Dodge City in his book "Dodge City, the Cowboy Capital." Through the series of nations and flags many people of varied nationalities have traversed our area. But one of the most consistent relationships - our relationship with Mexico - has been an enduring connection.

Vehicle license plates • Each year, the state sends out courtesy reminders six weeks before your license plate expires. • State law requires every vehicle owner to show proof of proper insurance coverage before the vehicle can be registered. • The Ford County treasurer handles all title applications and renewals. • The vehicle owner must sign the title application at the treasurer's office. Moving from another Kansas county to Ford County • A vehicle owner who has moved from another Kansas county to Ford County must register the vehicle in Ford County at the regular renewal date for the license plates. The following information is needed to renew license plates: • Registration renewal or registration from the previous year. • Proof of insurance with vehicle identification number and the policy expiration date. • Proof of payment of personal property tax from the previous county. • The vehicle owner will pay a registration fee and registration tax. Transferring title • A vehicle owner who has moved to Kansas from another state must register the vehicle immediately after establishing residency. • Wherever the vehicle is garaged determines the county in which it should be registered. • An MVE-1 inspection is required before a vehicle may be registered in Kansas. • Inspections on out-of-state vehicles are performed from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Ford County Sheriff's Office, 507 Avenue L in Dodge City. • The vehicle, title and a valid driver's license are required for the inspection. • The inspection costs $10, payable with cash or a money order. • Non-highway and salvage titles are inspected by the Kansas Highway Patrol for a $15 fee. Inspections are conducted from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays at the KHP office, 11314 U.S. Highway 50.

Last step: The treasurer's office • After the inspection is completed, the vehicle owner must take the following information to the treasurer's office: • The title and any supporting documents accompanying the title. • Pink copy of vehicle inspection/MVE-1. • Proof of insurance with the vehicle identification number and policy expiration date. • The vehicle owner must sign the title application at the treasurer's office. • A copy of the bill of sale or invoice, if this is a new purchase. • The owner will pay a title fee, a registration fee, personal property tax, sales tax and a lienholder fee if applicable. Services: • The Crisis Center provides assistance to people suffering from domestic violence. Victims call the hotline, which is answered by a trained victims advocate. If needed, the victim is provided shelter in a safe house and necessary counseling and services.
