How to Address and Understand Substance Abuse Disorders (Pastoral Outreach Skills) Christ calls us to reach out to those on the margins. Those with substance abuse often find themselves marginalized. This seminar examines both abstinence-oriented and harm reduction interventions related to the prevention and treatment of primarily alcohol and substance use disorders. Approaches relevant to work with individuals, families, groups, and communities are presented, with special emphasis on populations of New Mexico and the Southwest. The influences of culture, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation and disability in addictions, as well as the effects of oppression and social and economic injustice will be explored. Evidence based interviewing techniques effective with this population will be explored. (Advanced Family Life skills) This 3-part course will engage participants in a critical review of Pope Francis' views on family life and and the pastoral practices for reviving parish and family life that he proposes in his apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia. Class Christology (Advanced Theology – The Creed) Christianity stands on the person of Jesus Christ. Before Jesus uttered a single word or did a single act, God revealed in this man His will for us. Jesus' very existence as fully God and completely human, excluding sin, and how Jesus is a divine person whose divine and human natures harmoniously co-exist in a mutual relationship where one neither absorbs nor divides from the other, revels how God wants to relate to us. Before Jesus utters a word or does a single act, His very existence is a revelation from God that we are called to be in a permanent, harmonious relationship with God. Jesus' earthly ministry, climaxing in His death and resurrection, made possible our ability to reconcile with God and become co-workers in bringing in the Kingdom of God. This understanding of Jesus Christ is the fruit of the study of person and mission of Jesus Christ: Christology. This has been a central focus of study for theology since the beginning of the Church. What we believe and argue today about whom Jesus is and what He did was earned through much prayer, thought and argument. This course will enable students to learn and understand the foundations upon which all Christology rests, the theology developed from the apostolic age through the Council of Chalcedon in the fifth century A.D. In this program, we will explore how one might manage their stress and transitions in both healthy and unhealthy ways. This two session interactive program will give us tools, techniques and strategies to help us better understand ourselves and our families. Class Faith and Reason: From Saint Thomas Aquinas to Darwinian Evolution (Advanced Theology – Creed) How do we as Catholics understand our faith in the light of modern science? Are the two compatible? What are some of the issues raised by these two seemingly conflicting views of our world? These are some of the questions that were first addressed by Saint Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century and which still confront us today. This course will explore the history of the faith and reason discourse in the Church, with an emphasis on our understanding of biological evolution. Class The Challenge of Ecumenism (Advanced Theology - Church) Christ’s prayer at the Last Supper is “Holy Father…that they may be one…as we are one.” (John 17:11). Yet the history of Christianity is full of clashing convictions and divergent paths. “This discord openly contradicts the will of Christ, provides a stumbling block to the world.” (Intro to Decree on Ecumenism, Vat II) As Catholics, the Decree on Ecumenism states, the responsibility to restore unity “pertains to the whole Church, faithful and clergy alike.” The course will give us both theological background and methodology as how best to do this.
